Since Hurricane Katrina is yesterdays news, and there's a lull before her sister Rita wreaks havoc, it's kinda quiet around the ol board what with how all the book readers have deserted their posts, and those "black-is-beautiful" voices have become silent, apparently giving up on trying to convince the media that this claim is true. So now is a good time for me to take up the slack and get on my soap box. I've noticed something during my frequent run-ins, how in a desperate effort to best me, my opponents frequently resort to calling me - OLD. Yikes! I can dismiss the false notions that I am bitter, because after all, these mopes can't hear me benignly chuckling as I gleefully type up my barbs, - or that I'm jealous, because women always accuse each other of being jealous, - or that I am full of self-loathing. Puleeze. I loooove myself! And why wouldn't I? Us house niggas get lotsa perks. Just ask all them yard and field niggas out there bitching bout ol massa. But ain't no shame in Miz Anne's game. I get over, and am quite comfortable with what I see in the mirror. Smooch! But I digress. In spite of my "lucky break", all is not perfect. When I volunteered to tell my age, I forgot that in addition to all of its other foibles, Society is guilty of practicing ageism. That's right. Senior citizens are discriminated against. Especially female ones! To call somebody "old" is considered a way of hurling an insult at them. And to think there are those who have the nerve to carp about racism and sexism and colorism. tsk-tsk. Yes, yes, I know we seniors get our own special discount day on Wednesdays, and we're all living off of pensions being siphoned off from the paychecks of Baby Boomers and Generation Xers, you poor saps. But never mind that. What's really important is that old women are always passed over when it comes to casting the romantic lead in movies and they are never selected as spokespeople for beauty product commercials because they turn viewers off. And not only that, old women get rejected by all of the fine men who are all so - how can I say - age-struck! Shame of those phony jerks. I'm telling you there's no justice in this world. It's enough to make me content with my mellowed-out husband and a bunch of kids who all hope I get even older. Nevertheless, on behalf of my esteemed peer group, I'll spread the word. Being old is no sin. Having lived a long time is not grounds for digs. (pun intended. heh-heh) Being old is enriching. And cool. That is, if you maintain your sense of humor and learn not to take yourself too seriously. Cha-cha-cha. |

Woefully sad. Folks, don't let the lead post on this thread mislead you. This whining, whimpering pitiful creature who posted it is not the real Cynique. She used to be something. She used to be a big shot. But she--she--(sniff) I'm gettin' kinda choked up now-- I just wanna ask you--no, BEG you--that when you think of Cynique, try to remember the good times. Tap dancing across the floor in the Mayberry City Hall, in imitation of Shirley Temple doing a number with Bill "Bojangles" Robinson in one of them movies, to thunderous applause and a rain of silver dollars. That's the Cynique I'LL always remember and hold in my heart. |

Too bad you missed the inside joke, Chris. As usual, you are so busy looking for something that's not there, that the my little satirical piece went right over your head. I don't know what all that gibberish you spouted has to do with anything. |

OK, Chris. Fair is fair. Since you didn't get my little parody of ageism, then I'll fess up to belatedly realizing that in your response, you were reminiscing about those old days back when you were a shoe shine boy, forced to supplement your income by dancing for pennies, hanging outside stage doors, hoping some big star would throw you a bone. I'm guessing that as a little pikininny, you were as objectionable then as you are now. Get along dere, boy! Shoo. |

I'm never one to make fun of someone because of their age. As I always say, better to reach 70 than not. |

Cynnique, nobody views lightskinned people as being better off, lucky, or having lucky breaks. That's one of the many misconceptions that makes lightskinned people feel more important and good about themselves. (Pathetic and delusional). Normally I would say that at times they're just as fallacious as white people are sometimes, but being mentioned in the same breath as white people turns them on as well. (Even more pathetic/delusional). As for getting old, I hope I'm through fighting ALL of my battles when/if I'm your age... and, believe it or not, I really am hoping the same for you. Tonya |

All I know is that "old" = my favorite and the most beautiful people in my world - beginning with my Mom (who became more beautiful with every year of life and who I miss dearly and only WISH I could have seen grow older... Uunfortunuately I didn't get to see my Dad grow old", and I never got to meet my paternal grandparents because they both died young, didn't make it anywhere near old age. Let's see there's also (maternal) Granny, Gramps, and many aunts and uncles I refer to them as my "elders". Although they are not what our society would deem "well-educated", and they sure aren't/weren't rich or famous, they provide/have provided the most valuable information and the most outstanding and inspiring examples of love and positiveness in my life. My many elders' lives and spirits give me strength and joy and they cannot grow old enough, or could not HAVE grown old enough for me...nor more beautiful.

I love old people....especially seniors because to me they are so wonderfully unique and often I draw on their experiences, their voices and their wisdom. It is nothing better than sitting around a group, like my mom, my great aunt and uncles (because my grandparents have passed on) and listening to them tell their stories, man it ain't nothing like it. And don't let them start to drinking, well to be truthful they was already drinking to begin with...ahhh what wonderful times. Like I said, I love my elders, love the way they walk, look, talk and as far as i'm concerned they got a right to be grouchy if they want! Thats just me and how i feel about it and so thats my take on getting old, it's funny my son thinks 30 is old, i really get a kick out of that. No matter how you look at it, thats the one thing we will all be, old. |

cynnique, I tried to remain silent but I must speak now: You criticize me and trivialize MY complaints for being disrespected as a youth, yet go around and post an identical complaint about your age? You accuse me of getting angry for not getting responses (which is not the case if you ACTUALLY bother to read that post), but guess who responds most frequently on this board and to EVERYONE? Y-O-U. You may be older and have more experience, but your posts are no different than those of any insecure person of any age out to cause trouble. I may be only 23 but I'm old enough to know the difference between being "aged" and being "mature". You call everyone names, you call me in particular "gnat", "thin-skinned" and "pouting". You sound no more than a "aged" woman who continues to enact your misery on others like a selfish child,so don't get pissed if someone calls you "bitter" or "old". I know hypocracy when I see it, and I refuse to give you leniancy for being older. your little gnat, Roxie a.k.a "Rocky" |

Sisgal, I think your sentiments about old people are fairly typical. That's why my gripes weren't really meant to be taken seriously. I guess I have to give my fledgling attempt at being a satirist a failing grade. I'm not sure it dawned on anyone that by substituting the word "ageism" for "colorism" and the word "old" for "black", I was taking aim at my adversaries in an attempt to puncture their inflated sense of victimization. With that in mind, it should come as no surprise that I am, however, serious about being a "house nigga". Something it's easy for me to be because I live in a small town where the only thing separating the avenues of one class of people from another is a cross street. And as far as I'm concerned, one of the good things about my being old is that I don't have to be politically-correct. And so it goes. |

Yes, older people are a snubbed demographic. So be it. Actually, I myself, ain't that crazy about bein around old farts. I think young, and I like to interact with people who discuss something other than their ailments and grandkids. (Did I mention that Nelly is my favorite rapper?? LOL) |
