Regarding blacks in product advertising, has anyone ever noticed that light/lighter-skinned (black) males seem to be virtually non-existent in mainstream commercial TV advertising? In many TV commercials, you see: “light-skin/high-yellow (black) female / dark-brown (black) male” “light-skin/high-yellow (black) female / white male” “dark-brown (black) female / dark-brown (black) male” “dark-brown (black) female / white male” “white female / dark-brown (black) male” Another observation, you don’t see many (really) “dark/black” males or females either. Since TV commercials traditionally have the largest market penetration in terms of demographics, could one safely assume that advertisers are going to great lengths to make sure that the (black) men they choose through their advertising agencies are black, but not (frighteningly or threateningly) “too” black? Strange? Yes. True? Maybe. Any thoughts?

I don't think it's skin color so much as it is facial features. A very dark male or female has a shot at appearing in a commerical if they have keen, symmetrical features, which is to say the being "striking" in appearance can be an asset because having a "look" helps to draw attention to the product being sold. Think Tyson Beckford. |

It's pretty obvious. One of my friends pointed this out to me way back in the mid-90's. This has been going on for a while. It's clear the advertisers are trying to bring more diversity into their campaigns they fail to keep any balance. As always, in the crusade to represent one group they end up underrepresenting the other. However, my friend and the characters on "hollywood Shuffle" are the only ones to bring up this issue out loud. There's not as many light-skinned men expressing their fustrations as there are dark skinned women vocalizing theirs. Also, I notice there aren't alot of light male/dark female parings on tv programs, movies, or much of real life either. |

You are all missing the main point. Advertisers are trying to sell a product. Black people will not buy a product with very dark people representing the product. |

And in my own personal opinion, darker skin has usually been equated with more masculinity (hence, the quest for a black man), while lighter skin is usually equated to femininity (hence, the white woman's popularity). |

Chris: Yeah but white people will buy a product advertised by very dark people especially food products. Tonya: It's time we stop blaming white people. They know we can't stand our reflection. They simply don't want to offend us. Cynnique: Think Tyson Beckford. Tonya: We think Tyson Beckford -- They thought Ciceley Tyson, Whoopi Goldberg, Alek Wek, and Oprah Whinfrey. THEY STOPPED PROMOTING VERY DARK BLACK WOMEN, BECAUSE THEY REALIZED HOW IT OFFENDS US. THE'RE NOT OFFENDED - WE ARE. CREEOOOLE!!! Or as my friend, Deebaby, would put it -- "WAKE THE PHUCK UP!" yes, I have noticed this color bias! I think there are no light skinned "African American" men represented because of the general "color rule". The man is suppose to be with a lighter skinned (normally light skinn and attractive are paired together by the media) woman. I've seen studies which suggest people (of all races) tend to associate Light skin with being more FEMINATE on women. So in short I think the media finds it easier to get a dark skinned /browned skinned AA male and pair him with a lighter skin woman. Also, of course feuling this fire is the Afro-American media, with its MEN having most of the resources, cast the most AFRICAN LOOKING of men to play "Brothas" and the most "non-African" looking women as "sistas". Men it seems, to have to worry about the beauty standards that women do. |

Well I dont think AA's are "offended" by Dark skinned women, heck they seem them all the time. I think their "offense" comes from the mammy roles! I would find no offense in Kenya Moore playing Will Smith's love interest. I would prefer her anyday over Whoopi- Whoopi will never be a "Love interest". But that's the problem. Afro-American media complanies only PROMOTE dark skinned , nappy headed men as "sex symbols". |

How interesting that someone "Tonya"'s supposed age is still fixated on something that happened to 75-year-old Cycely Tyson 25 years ago. I also notice she says "us" when speaking of who is offended by dark women being in commercials, etc. I don't give a damn what color a person's skin is in a commercial. It's how effective the presentation of the product is that grabs my interest. So, speak for your self, dumb-dumb. Oops I forgot. You can't. BTW, Oprah Winfrey is not considered dark; she is reddish brown. And medium brown Whoopie Goldberg did play the role of Myrlie Evers in the movie biography of Medgar Evers. This subject is sooo played out, and nobody has ever said anything new about it. |

And the more you talk, the more you trip yourself up, Kola-nut. Young people like "Tonya" is supposed to be, don't know anything about Cycely Tyson. What an F-up. Also, you need to find "Tonya" a job so she'll have something to do with her afternoons and evenings and late nights and early mornings. Pitiful. Not even worth a LOL. |
