Greetings all, Please remember South African freedom fighter Stephen "Steve" Biko today, as this marks the 28th anniversary of his tragic death while in police custody. The online salute to Steve Biko -- an anti-apartheid hero as highly exalted as Nelson Mandela and portrayed by Denzel Washington in "Cry Freedom" -- can be found at ViqiFrenchFever.blogspot.com. Peace & blessings! Viqi French |

We will never forget Steve Biko. His mind was more powerfull than the nuclear weapons the old South African Apartheid government had in their arsenal of weapons. He fought white supremacy with "Black Conciousness". By killing him, a whole generation of Bikos were born who liberated South Africa. A Luta Continua. |

It is very unfortunate that Steve Biko is not remembered as the brave warrior he was and how he gave his life to the liberation of black South Africans. Very tragic indeed. Even more tragic than him being beaten to death, in my opinion, is the fact that he seems to have vanished from the memory of many blacks. This man braved a very violent repressive racist cast system that was ruthlessly enforced. Although there were countless faceless and nameless people who fought for the dismantling of apartheid, Steve Biko was highly publicized. It seems strange to me that so many people can conveniently forget him. Just as many black Americans are clueless to the heroic lives of Asa Philip Randolph, Harry T. Moore, Fred L. Shuttlesworth, Ida B. Wells-Barnett, Frantz Fannon and C.L.R. James. It’s very depressing. |
