Hate to say it folks, but news flashes covering the Katrina disaster in New Orleans showed the FBI all over the place. The “Fat, Black & Ignorant”, that is. It’s a cryin’ shame that the NO constituency is overwhelmed by so many with diabetes, circulatory illnesses and other adverse medical conditions. Black America, and especially older Black America needs to get in shape and loose these disgusting profiles. There is absolutely no viable reason why America as a whole (Black, White and other) can’t find the time or will to put its fat ass on a serious diet.
Drop the hog maws, pig feet, chicken necks, chitterlings and all the rest of that post-Jim Crow era bullshit. This ain’t about holdin’ on to yo’ culture, it’s about common sense, people. Loosing the Twinkies, Oreos, Vanilla Wafers, cheese steaks, hoagies, enchiladas, lasagna and stuff wouldn’t hurt either. Stop feeding the corporate coffers of McDonalds, Burger King, Wendy’s, Fat Burger and the high fat food isles in the supermarkets. That putrid fat will clog your arteries, give you a stroke, blind you and crush your partner during that night of heated passion and torrid sex, to say the least - and doggie style does count. In general, people need to get with the program, or they’ll be in the program - in their Obituary, that is.
A sad commentary.

I can only speak for myself,but I just turned sixty and am still wearing the same size slacks that I did 45 years ago.30 inch waist,34 inch inseam,and still end up on occassion lifting something that weighs more than twice what I do(a small block Ford V-8)and putting it in a crate for shipping,so,we ain't all like that,Nels. |

I have to admit, Nels, I'm addicted to philly cheese steaks, but I've committed myself to returning to the gym on monday and, for some reason, when I exercise daily, my appetite decreases dramatically.

I understand. I'm just trying to make a point, and it's really sad that the point can actually be made. No, not everyone has a William "The Refrigerator" Perry physique, but you gotta admit, America in general is in a terrible state when it comes to weight.

To Nels I would say that your obviously quite correct in you're observation that that there are a whole bunch of folks out there that clearly have no fear of a pork chop.
To Tonya I would suggest a light work-out every other day as much as possible.Every morning I do 100 stomache crunches and 50 push-ups.I also run 5 miles three times a week.Obviously,you would not jump straight into that,but you could dedicate maybe 30 minutes in the morning every other day to a brisk walk and develop a routine that works for you from there.The only problem with a gym is that you have to get up and go to the gym,which also takes up the travel time from your day.It's kind of like it must be to escape from prison.The hardest part would be winding your nerve up tight enough to hit the fence.After that,it's all just maintainence of the decision.Good luck. |

To Chris:This particular 'prize-winning physique'was over there dragging cars out of swampy mud and getting them running so folks could get out of there.It was also running back and forth hauling people out of there and getting them situated in a safe place, and just to make sure that there would be someone admiring my manly self I have a young couple with three small chilldren living in my house as we speak.I guess I must have some real ego issues.I probably should have stayed in the comfort of my home and watched tv while wringing my hands,bleating about how somebody needs to do something about this,like you did.I see from your comments that we can add big ol' fat bastard to that list of qualities you possess in adundance,like arrogant,stupid and argumentative.If a natural disaster strikes my area you can bet on two things.First,I will survive it and second,I will be right there in the thick of it in the recovery.Withdraw to your fantasy world where the chubby little munchkins don't have strokes and heart attacks and leave the grown-ups alone. |

In the meantime, the media seems to be crestfallen that the number of deaths related to this disaster is going to be considerably smaller than estimated, and that no major disease outbreak is expected. Damn. All of the celebrities jockeying for position on the crowded band wagon may have to be relegated to being anonymous do-gooders and before you know it, there won't be anything left for the average person to volunteer for. Much of the money contributed to the charity organization will eventually be used to pay staff salaries, finance new medical equipment, and line the pockets of the unscrupulous. All the survivors will get on with their lives, and be challenged to do whatever everybody else has to do in the wake of the everyday disasters that befall everyday people: make the best of it. And the United States of Confusion will stumble forward, somehow managing to keep its head above the flood of national disgrace. When it comes to Katrina, at this point, I welcome any expression on her face other than the same ol one reflecting the plague of poverty, racism, and bureacratic ineptitude. Me, I am on no medication and my blood pressure and weight are normal, this despite the fact that I eat pork, red meat, sugar, butter, lotsa salt, gallons of non-diet soft drinks, and am even a light smoker. But, everyday I do eat an apple, a banana, and a handful of walnuts, and drink a glass of red wine. And this is the testimony of a 72 year old babe who is vibrant proof of 70 being the new 50, and who, incidentally, also gives daily thanks for the genes she inherited. And, should one of those legendary midwestern tornadoes blow through my area, I'd be huddling in my windowless hallway, convincing myself that I'd been lucky to make it as far as I have, should it be my time to go. C'est La Vie. |

To Cynique:I am not trying to argue about who is more compassionate.I just plain don't like this idiot.Didn't before Katrina,still don't after Katrina.As I said earlier,I'm not the least bit irritated or angry.I can't speak for him,but I type my responses with a smile on my face.I realized a long time ago that I had never done anything in anger that I could look back on and say that I was glad that I did it,so I avoid acting in anger as much as possible.It's my opinion that the hurricane is yet another thing that will add a whole bunch of people to that ever-growing list of folks that are real pissed off at the federal government.I still believe that something very ugly is about to get started here between the people of america and it's brutally oppressive government.But I could be wrong. |

You all should check out Mr. O'Reilly on Fox News saying, in part, that teachers should sit their students down, point to the TV at the evacuees, and say "This is what happens if you refuse to work hard, become addicted, or live the 'gangsta' life." Our community needs to be serious about health and preventive health issues. Yes. I agree 100%. We also need to be clear about the multiple systems (including, but not limited to personal responsibility) that result in "fatness" and "ignorance" in Black people.
But let's not add to these folks' misery by mocking their physical states and blaming them for their conditions. Talk about kicking folks when they're down...

As cynical as I am, I would think I'd be the one more likely to garner criticism. But the longer I live the more I conclude that disasters are inevitable in the scheme of things, and - life goes on. |

So, I'll keep this reply civil, and move on - if you get my drift. I honestly don't believe that it's "Food" that makes so many black people have serious weight problems.
I spent MOST of my youth in Psychiatric treatment (which saved my life)...
...and to this day, I believe that MANY Black American people suffer from Chronic Clinical Depression directly related to being black and "unloved", "guilty over religion", "feelings of inferiority because of lack of education", "inferior because their hair isn't 'good'".
Blacks INTERNALIZE everything, and the poorer they are, the less outlets they have for expression. Many HIDE behind the church.
MOST black people, male AND female...are breakenhearted their whole lives.
That's why they crave really soulful, emotional music and prefer "comedy".

We're not going anywhere until we deal with this problem first.
Black people suffer from a serious illness which is closely related to major depression. If you notice, people who suffer from major depression connot accomplish much and are very suicidal. Similarly, as Africans and African Americans, we behave in ways that is self destructive, and it's also hard for us to accomplish alot. This is because we are victims of a dangerous and debilitating mass psychological disorder. Given this, how can we expect to get anywhere with people who are so gravely ill. Building our own schools, businesses, and neighborhoods is impossible until we build/treat/cure the people first.
Since Africans and African Americans view psychology and mental health issues as taboo, it’s hard for us to see the connection between our problems and the problems of those who suffer from mental illnesses. Yes, sometimes there are no real reasons for our problems -- we shoud definately keep that in mind. But at the same time, we have to acknowledge that this illness exist, that it's real, and that it's the REASON why we -as a people- can't and won't EVER get anywhere.

Hell, even so-called middle class and upper class Blacks who live in lower crime areas, who don't have to worry where their next meal is coming from, who have a choice involved in medical care, who can afford private schools and piano and dance lessons and summer camps for their children and nice lil family vacations, etc. have a smoother day-to-day; however, they still live with traumatic stress disorder and cannot buy their way out of some emotional dis-eases and spiritual unrest and/or feelings of frustration and/or displacement in their careers and work environments (and the working class and middle class often living above their means or one paycheck away from homelessness, have the financial anxieties as well) etc.
so those who hold their breath every time their children or a loved one walks out the door whether it's for school, church, work or recreation, and those who don't know where the next month's rent is coming from, or the next gas or electric bill payment, or who are engaged in hard labor at work for low pay, long hours, etc., have that much more to contend with.
(And still show themselves brilliant and resourceful to even survive.)
There was an elderly Black woman on television who said that in the wake of Katrina, the government treated them like "yesterday's trash".
What else is new?
Isn't that how poor Black folk are treated on a daily basis? And even by some Black folk who think they hot shyt cause they got an Associate's Degree or some shyt?
low-income area clinics and HIP Centers don't offer the best quality care
local bodegas dont make available the best quality food
We know that there are more liquor stores in lower-income areas, more violence and drug slinging on the corners while rehabas have waiting lists and the police cause more trouble than they diffuse.
I'm certainly not citing excuses which should hold us back or down, rather realities in our communities with which we need contend.
Black folk are hard pressed to see doctors when they have physical ailments, let alone dare wear the stigma of seeking help for "mental illness".
We don't grasp that as our bodies need rest, work and repair at some times or another, so do our minds and our spirits.
Also, being Black is challenging enough let alone being considered "crazy" too.
Is that just another point against me getting that job? That apartment? Will somebody come take my kids away?
I think there are layers and layers to uncover regarding our conditions and they should not be simplified with such notions as our problems would be solved if we just had enough sense to push away from a pork chop or pass over on some Oreos.
To me, ain't no crime in being poor and Black
aint' no shame in being poor and Black
or poor Black and unhealthy

No group of people kills each other over a pair of sneakers, a forty, forty dollars, a step on one's foot, a dis, or an unwanted stare.
All groups of people(even white Americans) started out in poverty; yet, throughout history, no other group has been anywhere near as suicidal as we are. They've killed "The Enemy" --but not each other.
If each group represents a body, we are indeed suicidal (mentally ill, insane).
As Americans we are a body, as black people we are a body and as African Americans we are a body. Each body functions as an idividual. If an individual is suicidal he/she is insane, So as an individual, as a people, and as a body - like it or not - we are insane.

To Cynique:It's not that Kola is suffering from multiple personality disorder.I always sort of assumed that this was how she practised developing plausible characters.Musicians practise daily with their instruments,artists sketch,etc..
