Found this on another site and thought I'd share: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/flood/timeline/timeline2.html Thousands of poor blacks were surrounded by floodwaters from a broken levee. A few white people were stranded with them. Transportation was available with room to evacuate all the flood victims but only the whites were taken to safety. The blacks were left behind without food, water or shelter. Eventually they were put in refugee camps patrolled by the armed National Guardsmen. A Republican in charge of federal government relief efforts engaged in a coverup of the refugee scandal. This was the aftermath of a natural disaster, the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 which devastated communities from Illinois to Mississippi. The city of Greenville, Mississippi was controlled by a few wealthy landowners who used thousands of poor black sharecroppers to farm cotton. When the Mississippi started to flood from excessive rainfall, the Greenville landowners forced black men and boys, at gunpoint, to shore up the levee. Unfortunately, the levee broke and many people died. Whites were evacuated out of danger. Blacks were evacuated to the intact portion of the levee, an 8-foot-wide swath of land surrounded by the Mississippi River on one side and the flood on the other. They had no food, water or shelter and the rain continued to pour. Several boats arrived to rescue all the survivors on the levee but the landowners intervened. They were afraid of losing their workers; once gone, the sharecroppers might decide to look for a better life. So, the few (33) whites on the levee were evacuated and the blacks were left behind. Herbert Hoover, then Secretary of Commerce for Calvin Coolidge and in charge of the overall disaster relief program, came to Greenville shortly after the levee break. The landowners convinced him that Greenville should be used as a hub for distribution of relief supplies. In order to supply the labor for the federal effort and clean up the town, blacks were forced into labor camps and worked under the supervision of armed National Guardsmen who abused their authority. Word got out that the guards were raping, beating, and killing blacks. Herbert Hoover initiated an investigation that confirmed the reports. However, Hoover did not want to tarnish his image as a great leader who successfully saved flood victims; he was planning on running for president. He managed to kill the story of the brutal labor camps.

--Transportation was available with room to evacuate all the flood victims but only the whites were taken to safety.-- Sounds JUST like what happened in Rwanda. All foreigners were evacuated and the rwandans were left to fend for themselves. As I always say, its clear others will never help us, so in order to survive as a people, blacks (africans and diasporans) NEED to unite and assist one another since no one else will. It worked during Jim crow, it can still work today. |

"White flight" is another form of this pattern. Whenever blacks move in, others (including some blacks) move out, taking businesses with them and leaving only the disadvantaged behind to fend for themselves in the newly-created ghetto. And now It's reversing, with the whites moving BACK to the city! Black people need to end their dependance on non-blacks so this "flight" stops affecting us so badly. *sigh* |

Just because non-blacks refuse to learn from history doesn't mean we have to make the same mistake. Okay, I'm finished. |

Roxie: Sounds good. But say I want to buy a car. Where is the black auto company. How about gas or electricity? Where is the black power company? How about getting down on the Internet. Where is the Black Web. I await your answers. |

Chrishayden makes a valid point. And the bigger issue isn't about non-blacks refusing to learn. This flood happened in 1927 and here we are, 2005, and New Orleans is just a repeat performance, on a larger scale and again, who got left behind? Non-blacks don't need to learn from history because they're controlling it, they're dictating the outcome of it. And if black folks didn't learn in 1927, and they didn't learn in all the years afterwards, what if anything, will motivate them to take the lessons being dished out in New Orleans, to learn from them, and to ultimately use them to their advantage? |

The only lesson to really be learned from this is the one Barak Obama is glibly pointing out. This is about class as much as race. Poor blacks are the ones who suffer in these instances, not upper class ones. Location, location, location. Actually, America has become too big and too sprawling, and too diverse to solve or even manage the mounting problems of all of its people, white and black. Unless, in the unlikely case of African Americans all congregating together in one black state in the hopes of taking care of their own by taking control of their destiny, nothing will change. Only we can save us, and because so many of us have become totally immersed in the dominant culture, racial unity is giving way to a demand for personal accountability and those who can't fend for themselves in the shark-infested waters are doomed to sink into the cesspool of poverty, a staus which is incidentally becoming synonomous with being black. Give up on Utopia, folks. Life is not fair. |

Roxie, I thought you (petty much) made all the points that they did. They basically said what you said, but in different ways. Cynnique, I think Barak Obama is a poor excuse for a black senator/leader and I believe that partly because of his veiws on class vs. race. Poor black people are poor primarily because they're black. You could never say that about poor whites or asians and, nowdays, you can't even say that about latinos. But middle class blacks, and their leader Obama, are using this class/race distinction in order to distance themselves from poor/inner city blacks. Even if it means that racism and black poverty may never be addressed, middle class blacks are willing to cut the throats of the poor/inner city ones, in order to escape the stigmatism attached to being black. Some may think that since whites are heading that way in high numbers, amareica will be forced to address poverty; therefore, benefiting and up-lifting poor/inner city blacks. But Puleeeze -- like racism won't be an overwhelmingly huge factor in that event. This class/race distinction is an extremely malicious srategy and a terrible idea. Tonya |

Cynnique: "Why don't you look these words up in the dictionary that's sitting right next to Kola's other computer??????" Cuz I'd have to travel across the country in order to do that! Can't this Troy Johnson guy tell if Kola and I live in two different states? If he can, he should be able to prove that we're not the same person, so why don't you contact Troy Johnson like Kola suggested??? Shoot -- if I really am "astute" like you and the dictionary say I am, I wanna get full credit for it -- so stop calling me "Kola"!!! Tonya |

Hi Tonya, Cynique ALWAYS does that bullshit. She accused the writers Paula Edwards and Tracy Price Thompson of being "Kola". We had a poster called "A_Womon" and she initially accused her of being me---until me and A_womon got into a knock down, drag out. She accused Nadine Holden of being me, she's accused countless people. Granted...before I had my own message board, I DID make up some "posters" from time to time--- but that because BACK THEN---I had Cynique, Linda, Thumper, Susan and a few others ALL GANGING UP ON ME---so I created some "Kola allies" to come in and poke holes in their attacks. But I hardly have the time to post my own opinions nowadays, let alone create new people and write all their shit too. And as I've said: troy@aalbc.com can settle this, but she doesn't WANT this settled. Your opinions are TOO much like mines--and she just can't believe that my name would DRAW OTHERS here who share those beliefs and patronize me because of the fact that they do.

I NEVER accused you being any of those people people you named, Kola, and your blatant lying about this just convinces me of how really devious you are. And you do have a history of being a fraud inasmuch you were busted for being Sunshine, Snake girl, a phony free lance reporter for Essence magazine, a male minister, and 3 or four other characters whose names I'd have to go back in the archives to retrieve. A while back, you even had us believing Thomas was posting on this board when it was really you. But who cares? I know you for what you are, and your credibility is zilch with me, but you've got other people fooled, so just continue talking to yourself. That's what crazy people do. |

Cynique, YOU'RE the liar----because you most certainly DID accuse each of the people I mentioned of being "Kola"---Paula Edwards was most recent, when you got catty with her until she revealed who was she---but OOOPS you forgot. Obviously, your memory dial isn't working. Old bitty.

And by the way... I was NEVER anybody called "Sunshine". Talk about a drab, unremarkable name. And....I WAS THE ONE who revealed that I was "Snake Girl"---don't you recall ABM saying I should have kept it a secret longer? (No, you forgot) Nobody busted me for being Snake Girl. TROY busted me for being "JoJo"---remember? The little white slut that came to help out MOONSIGNS. But I wasn't her either (fluttering eye lashes). AND...I used to be "PASSION" don't forget. It was Thomas who brought me to this board. I never posted here until 6 months after HE left. I started here about when the New York Times article ran.

Paula Edwards is "just-write", and I never accused her of being you because she didn't have your vibe. And I corresponded off the board with "a-woman" for a minute and I knew damn well she wasn't you. Thomas, in the guise of you, used to come this board during the same time you were posting. "He" would be crying about Kola being aloof, saying she was like Greta Garbo, and wanted to be alaone. We even teased "him" about being pussy-whipped. He/you and I once had a discussion about the book, "The Blacker the Berry." So don't come to me with all of your bull shit, because I have a very good memory. I even beginning to think you were the old retired southern school teacher and her husband who posted here when I first came aboard, and who mysterious knew what my real name was. You have a way of giving yourself away, and I will never reveal what it is, you sly, deceitful, slippery eel. |
