NEW YORK, Aug. 31 /U.S. Newswire/ -- While Americans around the country watched in sympathy and horror as Hurricane Katrina devastated southern Louisiana and Mississippi, there were some who looked on with a grim satisfaction borne of implacable hatred. The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) found hundreds of bigoted messages on white supremacist and anti-Semitic Web sites across the Internet expressing hatred rather than compassion. Though some white supremacists expressed concern for white victims of the hurricane, overwhelmingly reaction of the racists and anti-Semites was one of derision and even glee for the hundreds of thousands of African-American and other non-white victims. Realizing that Louisiana and Mississippi have huge non-white populations, the bigots expressed hope that the hurricane would be deadly and "cleanse" the areas hit. Employing classical anti-Semitic canards, they claimed that Jews would seek to benefit from the devastation and that Jewish control of the media skewed the reporting of the hurricane. "Once again, the racists and anti-Semites are exploiting a tragedy of great proportion and one that binds the nation to spew their hatred and seek to divide the nation," said Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director. "While they may be small in number, their reach through the Internet is of great concern. Their messages of hate must be countered by the good words of good people." Hoping for Genocide As Hurricane Katrina made its way across the Gulf of Mexico, heading for a Louisiana landfall, white supremacists speculated on its possible effects. Many, realizing that over two-thirds of New Orleans residents were African-American, hoped that the hurricane would be deadly: -- "It almost appears to me that the hand of gods (sic) is reaching down to smite the Southern Babylon." -- "I'm of the opinion that Mother Nature would be doing everybody a favor by cleansing the inner city." -- "It would be great if all the Whites could be evacuated and they could leave the groids/muds behind but we know that won't happen. The best we can hope for is that the best architecture stands and the casualties keep the n----r funeral homes busy." Wishes for mass casualties became common among white supremacists as the hurricane approached: -- "Let us bow our heads and pray together that half the jig population of New Orleans stayed behind to do some lootin' and this one finishes them all off. And Lord, let's hope all the faggots in the French Quarters stay as well."...

On some level...nearly everyone in the United States...is a White Supremacist, Black and White. Otherwise, White Supremacy would not be able to dominate--and when we say that we are Americans, what we're really saying is that we all accept and believe in the tenets of this Judeo-Christian, Victorian White Supremacist Culture. The White man's God is mightier---on some level the majority of ALL Blacks and Whites (and everyone else) believes that. Like any other European country, that is what America is. It's important for us all to remember that----because the White Supremacists are not "restricted" to designated message boards and white spots. They're AMERICAN and come in all colors and "levels".

ANYBODY: Why are we using the term "EMOTIONAL" to explain away racism?? Condaleeza Rice Just did it and I heard a board member do this once. I honestly want to know the answer to this and if "Babygirl" in particular would answer it I would truly appreciate it. Anotherthing, its been said by some experts that poor white people are now considered culturally black and I notice that people are now using the two phrases -- poor people & black people -- interchangebly. Are we and white america now considering poor white people culturally black?? Tonya |

Tonya, I don't know that I have the answer you're looking for nor can I comment on what Conde had to say because I didn't hear her. Neither do I know that the TERM emotional is being used in any way to explain racism away as I may not be interpreting your question as you intended. But I can restate and try to explain what I said once before. Racism is simply a BELIEF that the color of one's skin is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that our differences produce an inherent superiority of one race over another. People with racist viewpoints, whether they are white or black, don’t want to see any other viewpoint. They stand by THEIR BELIEFS. They don’t feel the need to change or to understand or to simply respect that their opinion isn’t everyone’s opinion. It is just how they FEEL, no ifs, ands, or buts about it. And it is manifested in pure EMOTION, a personal state of feeling founded on very personal circumstances and experiences. Those emotions are then reflected in their behavior. The issue of race and race relations is so volatile because it has the capacity to bring out the best and the worst of us because what we believe will be reflected in how we behave and act. And as I noted once before, there will never be any one position that will ever be right or wrong. Few people will ever really change their minds after such debates. Nor do they want to. Why? Because racism is not founded on anything logical. There is nothing of any substance or tangibility to justify racism or racist behavior. And you will never be able to argue any fool out of a feeling they hold in his or her heart.

Babygirl, thanks for your response. Condi was asked what she felt about how the Black Caucus and others viewed this event. She said that the government is concerned for all of its citizens and that African Americans were "emotional." It seems she was implying that AAs were over-reacting. Of course this is somewhat understandable considering the position she's in. Anyway, thanks again for responding. Tonya |

I'm not a big fan of Condi's, and with that said, African-Americans are emotionally invested in what is happening because we see ourselves in the faces of all those mothers and fathers and grandparents and children who are suffering. "There but for the grace of God..." Many of us who have not been personally affected are acutely aware that under different circumstances, those same faces they keep flashing on TV could be ours and our childrens and our families and our frustratin comes from the simple fact that as a people, no matter how great our accomplishments, we still lack the resources and the economic and financial ability to do for ourselves and to take care of our own. Our continued dependency on those who are simply "concerned" and only show it when fingers are being pointed at their flagrant disregard, has been our greatest detriment. But we have every right to be EMOTIONAL and anyone who isn't emotional, let them be damned. |

I agree with you 100%, babygirl. Except I feel personally affected even though I don't know any of them personally. Tonya |

Also, if we loved them and loved ourselves our accomplishments would go a long way -- That's the god honest truth. Tonya |
