Soldier from Florissant dies in Iraq; cause under investigation 05:20 PM CDT on Wednesday, July 20, 2005 KMOV FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. (KMOV/AP) -- A Missouri soldier dies in Iraq from non-combat related injuries. The Army says Private Lavena Johnson, 19, of Florissant died yesterday near Balad, Iraq. She was assigned to the 129th Corps Support Battalion based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Private Lavena Johnson enlisted in the army after graduation with hopes of getting an education through the U.S. Army. She had been in Iraq since February. Johnson graduated from Hazelwood Central High School in May of 2004. She was active in the band and black history club. A memorial ceremony is planned for Johnson with her unit in Iraq. The Army said the cause of death remains under investigation. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A beautiful young black girl. She was a straight A student and she was 19 and she's dead. All you sitting on your butts in front of a computer screen talking about how Freedom isn't Free--look at the price. All you talking about how the youth need to shape up and what they need to do the best of them are coming home in body bags. What are you sacrificing but hot air?

This is very sad. Essence did a story a while back on several Black female soldiers who have died in the Middle East in recent years. I've spent several years as a child (Army brat) and adult (former Army spouse) seeing just what you describe: largely working class Black young people trying to make the best out of their lives through military service. There are many, many ways to support these active duty folks as well as their families left back home. Contact a base near you for more info. |

Side note: Many female Black active duty and Reserve soldiers are also parents... |

Maybe some of our warhawks can give up a family member or a body part and stand around a picture of George Bush and sing "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow" |
