You know what's funny? If they had listed her as: "beautiful black girl" This would not be an issue and wouldn't get any publicity. This happened before in several COLLEGE year books, but the captions read: "beautiful unknown black girl"...."pretty smiling black woman, name unknown" JUST ONE MISSING WORD and it becomes a racial slur.

Chris, Well. All considered, at least they didn't say "Black [expletive]". Though...what kinda GD editorial process they have in place that would permit that crap to slide through? |

Kola: The insult is not the "Black Girl". It would have been as big an insult no matter what wonderful adjectives were there. The insult is that nobody even went and tried to check and see if she actually had a name. That's what I'm saying. You got one on the page. It ain't like they had hundreds and hundreds. Nobody said, "Hey, is this her name? Maybe we ought to check?" |

My point was....that in the same COLLEGE year books, when they show a White Woman who they can't identify, they just write: "Name unknown", "Woman in blue, unknown"......they don't put: "White Woman"....or "Pretty White Girl, name unknown". Race is never mentioned unless you're black. ALSO.... I've seen a few year books that just say: "Black Guy". ____________ I'm guilty of it. In my scrap books at home, I have pics with titles like: "Jewish guy who took me to the party, 1994"...."Greek guy and me dancing"....."Nigerian guy and his white wife helping me set table".

Who knows if they did it purposely or not... I know if that was me, I would be very embararssed. She was the only black person in the National Honor Society in her school, which is sad in its own right... But to not even be awknowledged by your name is hurtful. It's like being the new kid in a group of friends, everyone knows your name but one person, and that person continues to call you hey boy or hey girl, instead of asking for your name. You already feel out of place because you're the new kid, but then you're being referred to as something that is not even your name. You're going to feel even more out of place. I don't know... I think it's real messed up... Don't they editors and revisers to make sure things like this don't happen??? Much Luv, Stay Strong... edenson |

I dont think it is about nomenclature. It is about being subhuman and objectified. It doesn't matter if it was on purpose. What does matter is that white people are considered people with names and black people are considered black people with names. |
