So what do you think? Did the Republicans cave? The Democrats? Or did cooler heads and common sense prevail. Was it real--or was it all an elaborate dance and they all knew what was going to happen from the beginning? |

Put me down for the the "elaborate dance", though I'd say it also involved a bunch of crusty White dudes waltzing around brandishing their political manhood. |

I think cooler heads prevailed because finally statesmen are beginning to realize that this country is in danger of being taken hostage by the ultra conservatives and the reactionary liberals they provoke. |

Chris, This was all mostly prelude to how and who'll claim the White House come '08. And it's been smokescreen for our burgeoning fiscal and military troubles. Yes. Federal judges are powerful and politically 'immortal'. The more the GOP can stack the deck with conservative psychos, the better their chances of retaining control post-Bush. Still. There's no way the GOP would want the stain on their hands of having overturned 200 years of legislative process. Their doing such could be wielded against them come their re-election attempts. Also, if (when) George and Dick's Excellent Adventure in Iraq fails and our economic prospects worsen, they'll start to lose control of Congress. Then, THEIR terminating the filibuster thwarts their only recourse vs a Democratically-led Congress. Again. This was all just, as you describe, an "elaborate dance". And it's one, alas, that the rest of us aren't 'pretty enough' to be asked to participate in. |
