Banned Pregnant Graduate Walks Anyway
Date: Wednesday, May 18, 2005
By: Associated Press

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- A pregnant student who was banned from graduation at her Roman Catholic high school announced her own name and walked across the stage anyway at the close of the program.

Alysha Cosby's decision prompted cheers and applause Tuesday from many of her fellow seniors at St. Jude Educational Institute.

But her mother and aunt were escorted out of the church by police after Cosby headed back to her seat.

"I can't believe something like this is happening in 2005," said her mother, Sheila Cosby. "My daughter has been through a lot and I am proud of her. She deserved to walk, and she did."

The school's guidance counselor delivered Cosby's degree to her house earlier Tuesday, but she still wanted to participate.

"I worked hard throughout high school and I wanted to walk with my class," she said.

Cosby was told in March that she could no longer attend school because of safety concerns, and her name was not listed in the graduation program.

The father of Cosby's child, also a senior at the school, was allowed to participate in graduation.

LiLi,

To be honest, I don't have a problem with a CATHOLIC school thwarting a pregnant student from participating in a commencement exercise. A private, religious institution such as that has every right to set reasonable standards of character and behavior.

HOWEVER...That boy should have been pulled from the ceremony too!

Because when the MALES are made to pay almost as harsh a price for sexual immorality as females, the immorality will be less likely to occur.

Abm:

I am continually surprised by these Catholics who know how it is up front and are shocked when they pull the rules on them. The girl knew they weren't going to let her walk the day she knew she was pregnant. Now if her and her family are members of the church they are going to get it over there, too.

What would I look like coming on this site and then posting about how I prefer white literature? Hey, there are plenty of churches out there. If you don't like how they do it, quit.

They ain't gonna change.

Quick! Somebody call 911! I can't believe those compassionate champions of the underdog, Chris Hayden and ABM, are upholding the school's decison instead of supporting this poor, deprived, blameless victim of an oppressive system designed to reinforce failure - or some such rationale as that. The leg-spreading little twit should've pleaded her case by saying she was observing the Catholic tenet of not practicing birth control. LOL

Cynique,

When and where have I ever argued that religious organizations are NOT free to set their own criteria for behavior?

My views about the relative morality of teen pregnancy is irrelevant here.

Like, Chris, I think if you don't 'like' the Catholic standards of morality/ethics, the solution's simple: Join another friggin church!

And, (ditto Chris) I can't for the life of believe this girl and her parents were unaware that her getting pregnant would be severely looked down upon by the clery.

Now, were this a public school, I might view this differently.

My question then would be whether what the administrators have done is legal and/or constitutional. I think in THAT situation, I imagine administrators might be legally compelled to allow her to participate in the ceremony.

I'm not talking about religion and its rules, we're talking about your consistently feeling sorry for people who are the "victims" of a System. How can you chide a Catholic girl for expecting the church to bend the rules in regard to her teen-aged pregnancy, and then excuse an inner-city Protestant teen-ager who defies society by getting pregnant. You're very selective in your compassion. But - it ain't that serious.

It strikes me as odd that she was in line wearing a robe to begin with.If they had cops available to give the parents the bum's rush at the end of the ceremony, how is it that the student got there, wearing a robe, stood in line with the other students for 30 or 40 minutes, walked up the platform and announced herself without anyone asking her what she thought she was doing?Sounds a little strange.I would agree that any private organization, whether it's the KKK,the Black Panthers or anything in between, has the right to set their rules of conduct any way that they choose to and if I find them to be objectionable I should probably not be a member of that group. There will always be people that decide up front that they want to join some group and then insist that the group change the traditions that make that group what they are to accomodate the personal preferences of the 'new guy'.Some folks are pretty self-centered and stupid,I suppose.

Cynique,

First, I must admit I'm somewhat confused by what we're arguing here.

If you're referring to our ongoing Cosby debate, I'll repeat my biggest problem with him and those who think as he does is he conveniently excuse himself from being the source of the problem. And, until he and you understand that, I'll likely to continue attempt to enlighten you.

And, by my recollection, the girl IS getting her High School diploma.

Yes?

So what she's suffering is just a minor, slight blow to her ego. Big friggin whoop. And, hell, more of such is on the way.

'Cuz her @$$ shunnah gotten pregnant.

So she and her momma should chill, thank the LAWD she still managed to graduate and still has a chance to advance her life. Then prepare to cold-bust her @$$ for herself and her imminent shorty.

And I double-dare you to show me when/where I've expressly advocated teen pregnancy. Babe, I've GOT a teenage daughter (and another who'll soon become potentially reproductive).

A pregnant pubescient daughter scares me like all-get-out.

No, we are not talking about the Cosby incident. I'm talking about how you go bananas when I talk about wanton breeding, always blubbering about how these poor young teen-aged mothers are blameless. It's about your arbitrarily taking the side of the underdog - until now.

Cynique,

We could go on and on with this. But I won't.

I'll just say that the chick got her diploma. That, in my eyes, is the only thing that REALLY matters here. Now. If she were being denied THAT, I'd be stumping for the "underdog".

K?

Cynique:

If the girl had been a student at Chris Hayden high school, there would have been no problem.

There ain't no law requiring anybody go to a Catholic High school. When you in Rome, you gotta do as the Romans do. When I come in your house, I gotta follow the Cynique rules or hit the door. Same when you come to mine.

You ain't gonna go in a synagogue eating ham sammiches. You ain't gonna go in The Kool Room and say, "This is cool, but why ain't you got no white women up on the board."

Like Abm, if this had been a public school I would look at it different. But she is at a Catholic school. When you go in there, you are asking to be put under the rules.

...OKOK...But back to the baby daddy: Why was he allowed to walk? And please do not speak about the "Catholic Church" and "following the rules." Apparently exceptions are made if you are a priest and abuse an alter boy or two...

YVETTE!!

I've been missing you so much.

_______________

CHRIS

you can put white women up on the board in THE KOOL ROOM. It just depends on how they're up there.

ASHERAH was white and we've got tributes to Susan Sontag and other white women.

The problem with MEN is that they don't listen and FULLY comprehend.

'Vette,

I said in my initial post I thought the baby-daddy's @$$ should have been excluded from the ceremony too. And if the males were made more a public spectacle, maybe SOME of them would slow-their-roll a tad.

Well the truth is...ABM....that white women don't have to be YOUNG or PRETTY for BLACK MEN to salivate over them.

I haven't objected to White women of any kind being posted. What I've objected to is black men being insensitive about what they say and being insensitive about black women's feelings----especially since we are RAISED and RIDICULED by the "Black community" to spend every moment coddling and repairing the weak egos of selfish Black men.

So post whatever you wish and I'll do the same.

Yvette:

The Catholic Church done told everybody if you don't believe our man in Rome and is infallible we don't want your business. They done said if you are gay, believe in a woman's right to choose or want women priests or allow priests to marry you can hit the door.

So far it seems it is legal for them to believe all this, and hold their members to it. You know how I handle this? I ain't a Catholic. There's all kinds of churches out here and if you don't like how one does, you can step down the block to somebody who you favor.
