Hello Troy. Some friends and I were discussing the fact that right now.....early on.....you need to establish a yearly LITERARY AWARD for the "African American Literary Book Club". You could call it the TROY PRIZE or something---but you're in such constant contact with industry people ALL YEAR.....that you would be the perfect person to get 5 people per year to vote on a short list of literary categories and to present some kind of PLAQUE (to begin with) and to do a Press Release-----publishers would mention the "TROY PRIZE WINNER" on their books and in their marketing. 15 years from now...this AWARD could bring you great financial windfall and more than pay for this site---provided you be VERY strict with the selection process (you could have important people you know to simply give you a YEAR END "long list" of their favorite books and WHY---people would do this for FREE, just to have some say over who gets an award)----and then make sure the short list is compiled of ONLY quality titles (check reviews, word of mouth buzz) so that the Award becomes "sought after" and so that industry consider it a "prestigious prize"----that way, you can make TONS OF MONEY off it later. It's not that hard and you have the perfect apparatus (this site) to launch it in a serious way and to promote/publicize it. But timing is everything----you should do it now and you should LISTEN...to me.

NOW....just for fun..... What do people think the AWARD should be called???? We already have: The Pulitzer Prize The National Book Award The Hurston/Wright Legacy Award The PEN Award The Booker Prize NOW "ME"....because I'm so avant guarde (is that misspelled, darling?)....I would name it something really intriguing and memorable like: The Blood's Ink Prize **Talk about a name that WRITERS could relate to and would LOVE being able to say-----"I won the Blood's Ink Prize for 2007." I'm sure others will have even more interesting ideas....

I've got one... How about the "Crafts Equiano Prize"? With a nod the sad legacy of it being unlawful for slaves to read and write, the name combines the names of Hannah Crafts ("The Bondwoman's Narrative") and Olaudah Equiano, the first African-born former escaped slave to pen his life story without help or "guidance" from white editors or ghostwriters. But I do like "Blood's Ink". |

NOW THAT.....Crafts Equiano Prize....is truly inspired. It has a lot of meaning, history---and it would KEEP the history of our ancestors (their actual names) in front of our faces and in our minds....forever, each time of year.

Mah, I agree with Kola that you’ve made a wonderful recommendation. I hope that Troy (or SOMEONE) establishes the “Crafts Equiano Prize”. And I hope you get credit for having authored its name. |

Thanks for the well-wishes, ABM. As slow-going as my (real) writing has been these days, I need 'em! |
