In the light of recent headlines, I'm just wondering - if a prostitute who happened to be black and who happened to have overdosed on drugs 15 years ago and went into an irreversible coma that rendered her a "vegetable", and if her family had somehow managed to stave off attempts to remove her feeding tube but - the pimp who she'd lived with continues to intervene because he knew what his ho's feeling were on the subject, would George Bush and his "compassionate" Republican cohorts rush back to Washington to hold emergency sessions for the purpose of enacting and signing a special "Shenequa" bill that would override a judicial ruling in order to keep poor ol Shenequa breathing, or - if a gay man suffering from AIDS had lapsed into a coma from which doctors say he will not revive, and although his family wants his plug pulled, his male lover wants poor Bruce to keep on wheezing so they can maybe get married one day, would Georgie and his posse be there to delay the routine procedure that is recommended every day for hundreds of comatose patients all over America? I think not. The Shenequa and Bruce scenarios don't enhance the ulterior motives of the conservative right-to-lifers who wield so much power in the Republican party. So, although Bush & company are willing to sacrifice the lives of thousands of healthy young Americans fighting for some trumped-up reason over there in Iraq, our opportunistic chief executive cannot pass up a chance to keep a suitable white, middle-class, straight woman alive for the expedient purpose of fulfilling a political agenda. And let's not overlook how this tactic has set a dangerous precedent that could be used in the future to justify the government dictating all matter of things that law-abiding citizens can or cannot do. Shades of Big Brother! But - Cynique, you say, what if it was you or a loved one who was in a comatose state, would you still want the plug to be pulled? My answer is "yes." I am about the quality of life, not the quantity of it. I am not about existing, but about living, about being released from the prison of a body that is holding the soul captive. |

Cynique: In the Shanequa scenario some fourteen years fifty one weeks and six days ago they would have pulled the plug on her even if they had to do an "oops"! But then again, I am a Cynic |

This WHOLE THING has been almost as big a waste of media/governmental/public time, attention and money as the whole Elian Gonzalez fiasco (during Clinton's presidency). Every year 3 - 4 million Americans die via many 'exotic' causes/reasons. And the VAST majority of them die without most of us giving a crap what happened to them. So, at the risk of appearing callous, I really don't give a f!@# what happens. |
