From another list I'm on...I wish I had more source info. Sorry. Subject: Block Bush's attack on the poor As you know the President's budget will be released on Monday, February 7. The budget is expected to include significant cuts to programs for low-income children and families. We are urging everyone in our community to please call your member of Congress now and tell them: "don't balance the budget on the backs of the poor." To contact your member of Congress dial (202)224-3121 and ask to be transferred to your member's office. We also wanted to send everyone a very brief note on two opportunities: 1. The Children's Defense Fund is holding a nation-wide conference call tomorrow from 2pm to 3pm EST to talk about what they are doing around the budget cuts and how you can get involved. To listen in on the call dial 1-888-253-4037 and enter pass code 555424. 2. Another one of our coalition partners the Center for Community Change is also working on the budget and have developed a user friendly web site www.actionsspeaklouder.org_ (http://www.actionsspeaklouder.org/) . On this web site you can learn how you can get involved and also view an ad they are running this week in several key states. [More...] President Bush and Congress Plan Massive Cuts to Vital Social Services Budget Cuts Looming On February 7, President Bush plans to send his budget to Congress. He has promised to cut the deficit in half by the end of his second term. To get this done he plans to either freeze or drastically cut spending for a variety of programs that assist low-income children and families. They include WIC, Food Stamps, child care, community action funding, and possibly even Head Start. Medicaid, the health insurance program that serves more than 51 million families nationwide, is also on the chopping block. Incoming budget committee chair Senator Judd Gregg (R-New Hampshire) has already mentioned to his hometown paper, the Concord Monitor, that there is a real possibility that Congress will cut the federal contribution to Medicaid in order to balance the budget. Take Action Now is the time to take action! Tell your member of Congress to oppose any cuts to programs that help low-income children and families. Congress should not balance the budget on the backs of the poor. Please begin making these calls immediately. To reach your member of Congress you can contact the Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121. More Information As many of you already know our partner, the Coalition on Human Needs, is working with national and state organizations on understanding the budget process and coordinating a national message.
