Hey can anyone suggest a modern African American poet for me? Preferably female... I have to read the poems to my class and I'd kinda like to find a poet who I can relate to | ||

Well, I don't necessarily need something I can relate to, but I just want something that will move me. I've kind of been craving something touching, something with feeling, you know? I need something real. I don't read a lot of poetry right now, but it's hard to just find something. I've read some of Langston Hughes and some Countee Cullen, but I'm looking for something more contemporary. | ||

Well Melody, you are still a little vague, but why don't you try these--Sonya Sanchez, Jayne Cortez, Nikki Giovanni, Ntozake Shange, Elizabeth Alexander, Thylias Moss, Ruth Garnett, Sapphire, Suheir Hammad, Tracy Morris, Stacy Ann Chinn There is a fine CD with a sampling of many poets called OUR SOULS HAVE GROWN DEEP LIKE THE RIVERS. Give it a listen and see who you like on it. |
