to the man of the house

Do not neglect these times of fellowship
beside your bride while sharing midnight prayers
as tolling breezes snap their harvest whips
and amber leaves descend like spiraled stairs.
A second marks a chance to show you care,
for precious moments lost may not be gained,
and hourglasses echo falling grains.

Where do the birthdays seem to disappear
as sons and daughters grow to bear their own?
The Bible that you read must guide their years
and build a legacy for future homes
where no lost sheep believes he stands alone.
Responsibilities reflect a love
which fathers lace with every kiss and hug.

** I wrote this poem as a personal creed or self-reflection. I read it to my fiancee over the phone one evening. May the Lord always bring these words to my remembrance as we near and cross the threshold of marriage. **
