Have you noticed that all of the female host of B.E.T are light-skinned females? Take 106 & Park they have that Puerto Rican chick Julissa as the host. Also, B.E.T style they have light-skinned Melissa Ford as a host. The only host with a dark-skinned female is ComicView with Sherryl Underwood. And that is nothing but a minstrel show. Has anyone else noticed this? |

Yes, Yes, and Yes!!! Not only the WHITE OWNED BET features mulattas and Latinas as hosts, just about all the videos made by rappers have wall to wall biracial, white, Latina, and Asian women dancing to the beat of their songs.

I guess being black has been reduced to an entertaining fashion fad that any non black can participate in and throw off when it’s convenient for them. So that’s what BET is portraying. Especially where we black women are concerned, we are just out of the loop on BET as well as for your typical white struck black men. |

On another thread, Doberman, you said that the White Cuban had gotten more than the Black Cuban because of color.
Now you want to pretend that only lightskinned women are "gorgeous" as you put it and that there's nothing wrong with calling yourself a Black man but excluding beautiful black women from being represented on a network that is called "Black" entertainment television.
There is a "racist color line" on BET and Soul Train and everywhere that black men produce media images. Black women with dark skin and African features are not allowed no matter how beautiful they are.
You are not a real black man. You're an asshole.
Your posts constantly prove it. At some point a "real" black man would ask himself, where are the black women? You hate black women so you don't care.

Anybody's who is watching BET primarily for positive and inspirational portrayals of Blacks foks really REALLY outtah have his or her head examined.
And Melissa Ford looks MUCH better in still photos than she does in live action. She is one of a MYRIAD examples of just how amazing magazine photographers and editors really are. |

you can throw insults my way all you want pbg, every woman that was mentioned on this particular thread is a black woman, just because there light does not exclude them from being black/ african american. i will defend beyonce, alicia keys, vanessa williams, or that girl from ice cubes strip club movie and all the rest of them when they are brought into this sort of issue in such a manner, if you have to complain about the complextion of darker skinned sisters not getting there fair share that's one thing, but don't diss the other ones because they are able to succeed. i personally think regina king can out act halle berry any given day, but i was still very happy that halle won the oscar, damn at least one of us is gettin' it.
i hate black women? i won't even bother to go off on you for that, you make your points like a teenager, you can't debate your points so u just curse & throw insults ... grow up.. I said that BET discriminates against beautiful black women who are dark and that you're an asshole for defending it and supporting it.
How can we have black people without black women who are dark?
How come there's no marathons with beautiful dark black women in them?

ohhhh god, hi tonya.
my point is this, i had 3 other black kids that where in my classes all the way into we got into high school, we didn't notice any dumb shit about anybody being light or dark, all we knew is that we stood the hell out and that if some shit hit the fan, we all had each others back. we had to kiss hella ass to put up our black history month posters and when it came to music at the dances and get togethers, we we're all we had. wether i missed the bus or any of the other black kids missed the bus, you best believe in some areas they made damn sure you knew you where black... so to me that is how i've always looked at it. even in military life no matter where a brutha is from he will always take his ass to the same tables as the other bruthas, and you weren't thinking about if somebody was dark or light you just naturally would end up there.

Yeah. Kola's very possessive. That's largely what got me into to trouble with the Missus. She just figured with all THAT drama Kola and I just HAD to be boning.
(Which, of course, made a nikka like me think: "Shyt. If I'm going to catch all the blame for this, I probably shouldah at least laid wood to Kola.")
Funny. I guess I, like a LOT of Black men, don't always understand and feel that seething anger that many sistahs have for the Moonsigns of the world.

no tonya, i am saying whether your light or dark it doesn't matter to me your still black. i look at things just like our people in the 50's & 60's did, when harry belafonte and lena horne where on tv, black people where just as glad for them as they where when sidney portier and nat king cole where on tv. as i said before all the post on here where talking about taking jobs from black women and to me it made it seems as though because they where lighter that they should be looked upon as not being black . i think it's unfair and therefore i voiced my opinion.

I understand where everyone is coming from with the whole "Beef" marathon or whatever you wanna call it, but if you all actually sat down and watched the whole thing, you all would have noticed how all the shows ended... They ended with those same rappers squashing their beefs. They showed how both sides had a lot of growing up to do, and they showed how the two partie made up...
As far as BET in general goes, it's Black Entertainment Television... Keyword Black, Keyword Entertainment... It's not Dark skin Television... And it's about time they got a hispanic host... The hatred that's coming from some of the men on these boards is incredibly eye opening for me. I come from an old-fashioned family and all of the men (except one colorstruck brother and two colorstruck cousins) love black women dearly. As far as I know they've always been faithful to their wives and there's only been two divorces in my entire family. These are men who have always put their family first, mothers, sisters, grand/daughters, ect.; and they love their wives deeply. Even the ones who are around my age are responsible men who love their family and wives/girlfriends completely. And almost all of them, regardless of age, are with brown to dark women. My grandfather married my granmother who was brown. My stepfather married my mother who is very dark. My oldest brother is married to a chcolate brown woman. My other brother, although he ended up marrying a women his complexion, was in love with a blue-black woman for most of his adult life. (They couldn't make it work. But there is no doubt that he still loves this woman). My uncles are all married to brown and dark women, as for most of my cousins. And ALLL of the dark women in my family are married to good men who adore them. So it's strange to witness the type of behavior that is coming from some of the colorstruck men on these boards. Yeah, I've met PLENTY of colorstruck men before (I even dated a few), but to actually read their thoughts and to obtain such an intimate understanding of how they view black women is simply amazing. I'm not complaining though; because like I said, it's an eye opener. |

It's not that black men have raised the bar on anything. If anything, a lot of black women have sunk below the bar that was set before them. A couple of weeks ago, Babygirl and Reneta were having a debate about Renata's very heated assertion that some black folks refuse to stand up for black women when black women are being attacked yet when an outsider is under the same type of assault (in this case white folks, thus the topic of the thread, "white people are the dirtiest") those same black folks who refuse to defend black women will form lines to the hill to defend that outsider.

There are only so many hosts on BET. Two on 106th and Park, One on The Center, One on Ra City, and two on some other corny show, and one on comic view. As of right now, there are only three main woman hosts on BET. One Puerto Rican, One light skinned, and one dark skinned... Seems fair to me. |

I feel like I need to jump in here because there's a lot of bullshit flying around this board. Doberman, Cynique and others have set up a bunch of strawmen to totally disrupt the significance of the main post: the paucity of darker-skinned women on BET, whether as show hosts or video actresses. This is a serious issue with serious ramifications. The crux of the matter is, BET (and the hip-hop/R&B industry, for that matter) is sending its viewers the message that black women are only acceptable insofar as they more resemble the dominant culture than the African culture. That's a problem and it has negative effects on all African Americans, as it is teaching us that there is something wrong with being black, period.
It's incredible to me that any African American of sound mind and self-respect would defend this. |

And that's the crux of the issue right there. This is about the ravages of White Supremacy and Black Inferiority on our community. The only way to defeat it is to acknowledge it, how it affects our thinking and beauty aethetic, and take conscious steps to do better. It's not okay to say things like, "well, I just have a preference for lighter-skinned/more white people." If we are to survive, we have to challenge the horrible notion that "black aint beautiful" every day, in our minds. I stop watching B.E.T years ago when they first started excluding darkskinned women. It's actually been a long time since they've been doing this. I can remember when it started. At the time, nobody else seemed to notice, mainly because medium brown and lighskinned women were still being highlighted. As soon as latina and Asian women started taking over, however, people began to talk; and it was only then that folks started feeling distraught about the exclusion of darkskinned women. Of course I could see the cruelty in that, not to mention the downright hypocrisy. But at the same time, I was happy that people were at least starting to talk about it. Well. Some people

I was wrong about my weight anyways. I don't own a scale because I don't want to be reminded of my weight constantly. My weight when I arrived in MS was 158. I don't really eat much in MS...too greasy, too fattening, too salty, too sweet, and too much pork. Two days before I left, I weighed 162.
The last time I was weighed was when I was pregnant. I was 202 pounds a week before my son was born. |

I found out that I can see an herbalist (who I trust more than western doctors anyways) for only 125.00, plus the cost of herbs. I'll probably be seeing one in a few weeks and see if I can get something for low blood sugar. |

The truth is that the black people in this country have never been FREE or been anything other than.....the sum of their niggerdom.
It's all they know. So there's a comfort in it, a "familiarity", no matter how degrading and self-destructive.
And this is why I feel that the people in Africa, supposedly doing all the suffering----are better off than the Black Americans.
Materialism keeps the Black American from seeing this. They think having a "fab weave" and a lifestyle similar to those on T.V. are the epitome of success and well being.
I have lived on both continents and I am put together by both sets of relatives, African and Black American (and Arab).
So I KNOW that most of the people living in the 50 nations in Africa are better off.
It's the Black Americans...who desperately need to be rescued/saved/re-programmed.
Which is why I can't leave.
I am one of the few African women who has been put in a position to realize that....I am their real mother. And I have to take whatever abuse and rejection in order to begin planting a new seed in them.
God has shown me...the more you know; the more you owe.
I am stronger than they are and they cannot love themselves until I annoint them.
They are like a nest of hatched chicks with beautiful fur and shiny eyes, but starving and irritable.
So I agree 100% with everything you've said, because I detest BET.
I think BET is the single worst "dispencer" of self-hate and self-destruction that there is in the AA community.
Millions are glued to it daily...receiving the LIE.
And it only takes one lie....to unravel the whole world.

Who/what am I in awe of? Pixels on a fucking screen? I don't personally know anyone here and I'm quite sure no one knows me. I came to this message board and stuck around after lurking because the comments seem to represent my favorite type of people: smart, positive, honest black people. I enjoy reading the boards here, yet feel no compulsion to befriend, much less stand in awe of, anyone.

Well Kola, I'm not denigrating the (successful) struggles of numerous African nations against colonialism. I am merely asking that you acknowledge and respect the struggles that African Americans have engaged here. We have created a nearly unmatched standard of living and set of rights. We did die to make that possible. We also launched numerous campaigns, most famously the anti-Apartheid campaign, to show solidarity and force reform in continental Africa. Obviously, we still have far to go and I admire any black person who is willing to fight with us. I just ask that you respect what we have done here, despite the obvious need that we put the coons on notice, and strive for greater black achievement. |

I have always acknowledged the gains made here by Black Americans.
The many books I write testify to that in my constant homage to my idols Malcolm X, Toni Morrison, Alice Walker, Sojourner, Harriet...
The list is endless, and of course, I was raised by Black Americans--they saved my life.

Here come the rest of the coons.
What puzzles me is a belief, that I think undelies the perspective of those who whould defend a BET or a Soul Train perhaps.
They really beleive that through the gradual erasure of Blackness and dark skin they will eventually be accepted by this White culture.
This will never happen. The root of White Supremacy is not entirely based on the preservation of whiteness (if at all),
but the garantee of some level of power based on that whiteness.
So, although someday, hypothetically speakind and God forbid, we may all reach the peceived and false perfect asthetic of whitness, there will still be marginalisation of "unpure" groups.
Except by then there will probably be a 5 minute test that can instantly tell just how much non-white blood you have.
You will STILL be marginalized. And they will STILL hold the power.

And furthermore, every African American of any color loses out in a paradigm which posits that blacks can only be acceptable insofar as they are deemed acceptably white enough to be granted semi-personhood. Any black person who would defend, even embrace, such a paradigm is as much a threat to the family as their ideological ancestors who anxiously ran to massa and ratted out slave revolts. That's how serious this is. |

This is a ridiculous argument. Media images of African Americans have a tremendous impact on how we see ourselves. BET is the largest entertainment network for black people. The colorism that they tacitly endorse most certainly has real-world implications on how (particularly young) people evaluate the acceptability of blackness.

There is some truth to that.
One solution is for blacks to focus on giving their kids a better set of values and to demand that schools provide better educations so that the future generation can have the credentials and wherewithal to pool their resources and buy their own TV stations and movie studios and distribution companies.

I usually won't engage in tit for tat. I'll never be convinced of your perspective or you mine. So I think it's a futile waste of time.
Although it is entertaining to read.
Just because it may not go away (and I am not optimistic that it will) it does not mean that I will participate in it. I could not fathom, knowing what I know is the true root of this rush to become similar to the mainstream, not resisting. I have too much intergity. Obviously this is not true for you.
