Well,

On the night of the Superbowl, my mother had a select number of friends over. I was able to catch the pre-game show featuring Stevie womder Joss stone, aretha franklin, and John legend. I was also able to see the halftime show w/ the rolling stones. Well If you watched it too, you noticed that they obviously spent more money on the RLs' set than they did for the Motown perfmers.

Anyway, when I came down to grab some of the food set up for the event , I overheard the group commenting on that the fact that the superbowl WAS being held in detroit, and on the SB's 40th anniversary too, one would think that they would put the MOTOWN performers in the half-time slot, NOT the rolling stones. And they would AT LEAST give them a better stage, too.
My mother's guests had a point.

what do you guys think about this issue?

Honestly. I think the Motown foks stunk (with the exception of Aretha) and the Stones stunks.

Those foks are OLD. Maybe it's time to turn the page on entertainers who got their start during the Kennedy Administration!

There was a time when there was no pre-game show and the half-time show was lackluster entertainment to pass the time. The Superbowl was about the game, not the musical interlude. Over the years, I think the musical interlude and the commercials suddenly starting taking precedence over the game, but with Janet's infamous wardrobe malfunction, I think the promoters are slowly trying to wean the audience away from the hoopla and back to the business of the sport.

The Stones worked for me. I went to the kitchen to eat 'cause the show was painful at best and not worth watching at all.

Before you mentioned anything, I didn't think anything of it. And, I'll watch Stevie before I'll watch the Rolling Stones. And, I dont' really pay too much attention to props, I pay attention to the talent.

everyone in detroit was trying to get the superbowl to put in motown singers, kid rock, eminem, bob seger, or anyone else who lived or was from michigan, but like babygirl said, because of the janet incident ...the nfl wasn't trying to hear it. they should've gotten somebody though because that game sucked almost as bad as the halftime show ... i wanted the steelers to win, but i wanted them to win without the help of the refs. oh well ... guess you can't make everybody happy ... i'm just glad that detroit was able to make some money from it and hopefully it goes where it's supposed too.

isn't it amazing how all these cities are able to get rid of the homeless when a special event comes to town?

Kinda ironic how the Rolling Stones who have for over 40 years been the living embodiment of music's "Sex, Drugs and Rock-n-Roll" ethos is NOW considered suitable and safe family fare.

I admit to not having seen all of the pre-game (and none of the halftaime show). But give Stevie some credit--he pulled a fast one by singing a clearly anti-war song in such an environment of rah-rah patriotic manliness.

The Stones are just sad now. Yeah they may have agreed to change some of their raunchy lyrics for Ed way back in the day. But come on--It's 2006. Guess we're too delicate to hear about a dead man cometh...

'Vette,

I just wish Stevie could still SING. 'Cause, really, babe...he CAN'T.

I know I'm blaspheming. But dang, Stevie can't sing no mo, boo. Steve and the rest of Black America need to go'n accept that.

And I don't care how much they use his (modestly talented) acolyte John Legend to try to cover that shyt up.

I found myself trying to help Aretha reach those high notes. The Rolling Stones are the icons of the Baby Boomer generation and they are the people who make up the bulk of season ticket holders to football games.

The Motown singers would have been nice but the way Berry Gordy and the rest of them left town left a bad taste in Detroit's mouth--

Probably Diana wouldn't come back. Michael is out of the country. So many of the others are dead.

They probably should have had some new kids do a bunch of Motown medlies--and revealed how they can't carry those old singer's tunes in a bucket.

Cynique,

I agree, though I think Aretha sound better than the lot of 'em.

She'd probably should even better if she could drop a couple 100 lbs.

And I don't care what ANYBODY says: Keith Richard's a$$ has been dead for at least 10 years. The Stones have REALLY overdone that "Weekend With Bernie" trick they've been doing with Richards' corpse.

Roxie, I agree that the SuperBowl producers should have hired a Motown act for their half-time show and not the Strolling Bones. It was torturous watching Mick Jagger skipping around trying to act like he's still got it going on. And I don't have anything against old ppl since I'm getting there myself but those guys are better suited for a Viagra commercial. I would have loved to see Smokey or even a Marvin Gaye video would have been better than what was presented there.
