That is a question that has been nagging at me for a long time.I used to live in Miami and I had many Haitian friends. Why do the Cubans get to come here but not the Haitians?

Bush says" It is because the Haitians although poor live in a country with a democratically elected government. However, Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. A.I.D.S have devastated that country. Over 95% of the population lives way below the poverty line. Many of the ppl there are starving to death. When the Haitians come here they are automatically sent back.

However, the Cubans are allowed to come here whenver they want(so long as they reach the shore). When they come here many of them are set up with food, clothes, jobs, and housing. Many of the Cuban refugees that come here are "White Cubans" who are professionals, because they are the only ones who can afford to be smuggled into this country. Not only that the Fidel Castro makes sure that his ppl although poor have 3 meals a day, are housed, and have clothing. About a quarter of the Haitian population is homeless.

I used to live in Miami and I personally loved the Haitians. They are some of the most humble, loving, and trusting ppl in the world. The Cubans on the other hand were very racist(the white Cuban elite hated blacks, and Afro-Cubans), and some of the most arrogant ppl I ever met. How do you feel on this subject? Have any of you ever been to Miami? And what were you experiances?

White Cubans need to die, IMO. They're just taking up space, and they know it. They deserve to be here just as cockroaches and mice deserve to be running around my house making me miserable. They were assholes within Cuba, and they are assholes here. On the other hand, Barcelona sounds like a wonderful place for the likes of them. We should deport them there if we can't muster the strength to fucking kill them.

They don't want them here because they are black and because they want them to stay in Haiti where they can be used for sweatshop labor.

i have never been to miami, but i have actually lived in cuba for 8 months and was in haiti for 3months. in cuba i stayed at guantanamo bay where they held both cuban and haitian refugees, it was 1995 when castro gave the green light to his people and told them if they didn't like c uba they could bounce. when he did that clinton was like hold the "f" up it's too many of ya'll and then had the coast guard and navy stop them from reaching american soil and then sent them to g-bay, so they could figure out where they were going to put them. haitian's heard about what was going on in cuba and decided to take advantage of the situation and come to america too. your right, they didn't even get half way to america and where told to turn around or when they got to america they where snatched up and sent to guantanamo bay, so they could be sent back to haiti ...some of them where allowed to come to america, very very few.

while i stayed in guantanamo i actually enjoyed being around the cubanos, and though i'm quite sure there is some racism there, i believe that it was more classism than anything. cubans came in all different shades, some where darker than the haitians and some looked like straight up white people, but i will tell you this, throughout my 8 months of being there i had not noticed one bit of racial bias or ill treatment towards each other there no matter what shade they where. perhaps it was the situation that they where in and they knew that they needed to be close knit but it didn't seem like they had any problems in that area. from my own personal view it seems that when any person of any race comes to america they usually look down on black americans when they get here and immediately kiss white america's ass ...especially the africans that i know.

while in haiti, oh my god! i couldn't wait to leave. i was a food service spec/ dietitian ... and we went there as humanitarian relief. the second day i was there we had rocks thrown at us, and those little $%# throw those rocks like doc gooden... it would have been impressive if they weren't trying to break us off. i don't know what it would take to get that country up to speed. i felt sorry for alot of them they really did need help, probably still do. the nonmilitary people that where there, were really pissing me off. more than anything it seems to me that they where more concerned in handing them out bibles instead of medicine. the sanitation is a joke there and i would really like to know how aids got there in the first damn place, i seriously doubt most of those people could afford to travel and then bring that back to haiti. the government there was also super shady too, black on black crime at it's finest. i would say that america should have been spenidng as much on them as they where those in guantanamo bay but i really couldn't expect that to happen especially after seeing the new orleans fiasco. not only that at that particular time any money given to that government would have never went to the people who needed it.

so anyways that's my perspective of being stationed at both places for a brief amount of time. take it for what it's worth.

Serenasailor wrote: "Why do the Cubans get to come here but not the Haitians?"

Because the US government says that the Cubans are “political” refugees while the Haitians are people trying to escape “poverty”. The Cubans are considered what is called “political refugees”, who are subjected to “political oppression”. That falls under the State Departments guidelines for political asylum. They (the US) maintain the Haitians are not being politically oppressed, so they don’t qualify for “political asylum” as do the Cubans. Same thing goes for the Taiwanese. That is why they turn them back. They do not come from a politically oppressed country.

But of course we all know that that is b.s.. If the Haitians were Norwegians, Germans or Swedes, they would be welcomed with open arms. The policy is blatantly racist and arbitrary. And the isolation policy the US maintains for Cuba is one of the most stupid and indefensible. The US stands alone in the world with this embarrassingly absurd double standard. The US states the Cubans should be isolated because of human rights violations yet it grovels and kisses the ass of the Red Chinese who are unrepentant and openly strident with their human rights violations. And if they were really concerned about human rights, the US military would have bombed Khartoum into ashes years ago for the grotesque ongoing mass murder and enslavement of blacks by the Arabs. But since Sudan has no economic or political importance as does China, it is easy for the White House to ignore its existence and the horrific suffering of the black Sudanese.

I few years back, I saw a documentary about 2 Cubans. One White and the other Black. They grew up bestfriends in Cuba. Virtually brothers. Wherever you saw one, you saw they other.

When they grew into adulthood, both managed to emigrate to Miami.

The White Cuban was able to quickly secure good employment and managed to progress into a the Middle class. And he lived in a fairly safe, comfortable neighborhood.

The Black Cuban struggled to get work. And when he did get a job, he couldn't earn enuff to make ends meet. He got frustrated, started street hustling, into trouble with the law, etc. There was no mentioning of his residence (assuming he actually had such).

The asked both what happen to their friendship after they emigrated to America.

The Black Cuban said he tried to maintain their relationship but his friend did not seem to have time for him once they to got to Miami.

The White Cuban said he doesn't understand why Black Cubans struggle here. If they work hard, they should be successful. But they don't. Maybe what they say about Blacks is right. Maybe they are not as good as lighter skinned people.

I have found that the Cubans are very arrogant ppl( the white ones anyway). Doberman I don't know about your experiances but the Cubans in Miami(the white ones) were very racist. Now I don't know how they are in there country,I think they are not racist because Fidel Castro does not allow racism.

However, the one could argue that maybe it doesn't really have to do with race. Because the Mexicans are not allow entry into this country legally, and they are Mestizos. Bot it is true that most of the Cubans that come are are white. So maybe that is why they are allowed to come here.

Interesting commentary. I personally have heard stories by US military personal who did tours or deployments in GITMO and Haiti. Their stories mirrored just about every thing you have said.

If you don't want cubans or haitians here then we shouldn't allow anyone else in either. No AFRICANS, EUROPEANS, AUSTRAILIANS, ASIANS.... NONE. I'm haitian, and I love my culture, but we don't realize when people are trying to help us out. We want to do everything on our own but we need help... I was watching the news the other day and they found some Cubans in the water... One of the men had lost a part of his finger, so they air-lifted him to a hospital in Miami.... Now even though they found him in the water, because his feet touched dry land once they got to shore, they let him stay.... but his other buddies have to go back.... Now if you ask me, that is some real bullshit!!!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't Calfornia and Texas once a part of Mexico? Please advise me accordingly as I'm not American.

Abm, it's called D-I-S-C-R-I-M-I-N-A-T-I-O-N.

That's why the black Cuban got fucked.

Because doors opened for the white Cuban where they closed for the black Cuban.

Schakspir,

Thanks for relaying the obvious. I'll try never to forget that in America lighterskinned people are generally given preferences over darkerskinned people.

Btw: You wouldn't happen to be related to Chris Hayden? Wouldyah?

I have no issue with anyone who wants to come here--as long as they meet certain requirements.

1) Will be a productive member of society (that includes behavior in all areas of life).
2) Will learn and speak English, especially in a work environment.
3) Will respectfully tolerate the freedom America offers to choose and practice any religion.

Chris Hayden? No, we are entirely two different people, and though we might say things that sound similar, our brains definitely do not work in the same fashion.

That's another thing, if someone in your work pace is speakng another language to someone from thei background, let them... By denying them that right, it's like taking away their heritage, like the whites did to slaves... Now if they just don't know how to speak english at all and refuse to learn, well then that a different story.
