Hello. Very much enjoying this board, and I've had a question that's been itching for some time now. Thought this would be the best place to get mature objectives. (If the topic has already been touched on before, please forgive me.)
I know of a lot of younger (and some older) african-american female fans who enjoy NSync. And yes, I already know that a lot of people think they've "ripped off" black music. I, for one, don't think so. I happen to enjoy them, myself, and there's no shame in me saying so. I'm thirty. Not a teeny. But that's not my question.
I've noticed that a lot of these younger, black, female fans seem to dwell on the fact that a few of the members of NSync (for example) have mentioned that they have a "preference" for black women in some way or another. Justin Timberlake, for one, has mentioned on several occasions, his attraction to Halle Berry and Naomi Campbell. (Forget about the fact that he's supposedly with Cameron Diaz right now.) And then there's JC (the slim, dark-haired, "soulful" sounding other lead singer of the group) who's made similar references about preferring ethnic features in women.
No question that their r&b sound has attracted many african-american's to their fan base. (Even those who aren't so willing to admit.) However, there seems to be a lot of bitter discussion when it comes to who these young men choose to be in their videos, or date in public, etc.
My question is, are these young women over-reacting to celebrities who are probably too young to even have enough experience to know what types of women they prefer? And do you think the race of popular musicians, in general, has an effect on establishing early dating preferences with the younger audience? What do you think? I have a few friends who started interracially dating after New Kids On the Block entered the music scene, and I always wondered if the reason why this happened was partly because of whose music they were into.
This might just happen to be the wrong forum for this question. But I thought I'd lay it down here. Anyway, I hope my question is clear for adequate response. Thanks.

I think people who are interested in those outside of their own neighborhoods (though they may not have loudly stated so), will always find ways to hook up with other groups of people.
Whether some of these Hip Hop groups are White or whatever, is besides the point.
If you ain't interested in White men or the White men in singing groups, White men singing Black music will not make you overcome with JOY.
I have known Black people interested in Rock 'n' Roll (Jimi Hendricks anyone?) and Techno, but not drawn to White people in a romantic sense.
I think if you're open minded to it, then you will find a way to make it happen regardless of what's happening musically.

My personal opinion, I just think musicians, as most artists, are more liberal and less prejudiced than non-artists. |

Artists are more open to learning more about the world around them than others, and see the beauty in everything as art. They SEEMINGLY are more willing to read things they don't agree with, listen to new types of music, learn other languages, travel to more places. There's beauty and art in diversity and the unfamiliar.
I'm not saying this is true, just my opinion. |

To ABM,
That's a fair question because rarely does the mainstream media show white actors, singers, artists, dancers, writers with non-white women of any stripe. Artists such as Justin Wimperlake may say that they like black women but in the end take a white fiancee. So, talk is cheap, real cheap! |

Actors have PR people and agents who cultivate their images for them. They would never advise a white actor to date anyone who might jeopardize his career. |

Yes, Renata your theory is untrue. Artists with money have the means to live out what's inside them like Michael Jackson could afford to become white. Other celebrities like Diana Ross too.

I wife has MANY friends, relatives and aquaintances who are artists (her sisters and nieces are actresses and singers). Most of those foks are HARDLY liberal. If anything, they're MORE conservative than most other Black foks I know and observe. |

Okay. That is very myoptic thinking.
You know why? Because HITLER was an ART STUDENT.
People who create art MAY SEE BEAUTY IN THEIR OWN WAY. Which may be FRESH to others. But that does not free them of human short-comings and failings just because they can paint a prettier picture or write a more clever song.
There are many neo-nazi's who write and produce their own songs. They hand their songs out to kids outside the school yard. I know this because I read.
They are artist. They are creative. What do you have to say about what they DO with their creativity? The same kind of art was produced portraying Black people as big-lipped and stupid animalistic people.
Do you think these people are open-minded?
In Germany during the 1940's there was art work produced depicting Jewish people as degenerate and non-human.
Art and music can be used to do whatever the artist has in his/her mind. These are not pre-school babies taking joy in the whole world as you would like to think.
They are not Gods with paintbrushes or beautiful voices.

It's been theorized that were Hitler a better artist (I believe he his applicant to some Austrian or European art school was rejected), World War II might never have happened.
