I'm sorry, but I had to post this. It's kinda sad but very funny at the same time. The idea of a "white man" as a mascot is hilarious!

'Fighting Whities' Mascot Chosen By University Team Team Takes Name To Mock Indian Mascot
GREELEY, Colo -- Unable to persuade a school district to drop a mascot
name that offends them, some American Indian students at the University
of Northern Colorado have named their intramural basketball team "The
Fighting Whities."
Led by Solomon Little Owl, director of Native American Student Services
at UNC, the team chose a white man as its mascot to raise awareness and
understanding of stereotypes that some cultures endure.
"The message is, let's do something that will let people see the other
side of what it's like to be a mascot," Little Owl said. "I am really
offended by this mascot issue, and I hope the people that support the
Eaton mascot will get offended by this."
The team is made up of American Indians, Hispanics and Anglos. They wear
jerseys that say "Every thang's going to be all white."
"It's not meant to be vicious, it is meant to be humorous," said Ray
White, a Mohawk American Indian on the team. "It puts people in our
shoes, and then we can say, 'Now you know how it is, and now you can
make a judgement."'
White said many people don't understand how it feels to be victims of a
stereotype.
They are upset with Eaton High School for using an American Indian
caricature on the team logo. The team is called the Reds.
Eaton School District superintendent John Nuspl said the logo is not
derogatory and called the group's criticism insulting. "Their
interpretations are an insult to our patrons and blatantly inaccurate,"
he said. "There's no mockery of Native Americans with this."
Charles Cuny, an Ogalala Lakota and member of the team, said he went to
an American Indian Catholic high school with a mascot called the Red
Cloud Crusaders, after a famous chief of the Lakota Indians.
Having a white mascot is a way to make people more aware of American
Indian issues, he said.
"We live in a politically correct society, and sometimes Indians get
overlooked," he said. "There are so few Indians who have clout that
there are a lot of things that go unsettled

There is an on going battle at the University of Illinois in regard to their team mascot Chief Illiniwek, who performs as killer war dance during half time performance at "Fightin Illini" sporting events.The campus is pretty evenly divided as to whether to get rid of this mascot who has been around for over 70 years, and whose costume was designed by native Americans and whose authentic dance is always performed by a student who was an Eagle Scout. I have mixed emotions about this. Cheering for the Chief was the only class I ever got an "A" in during my 2 year stint at the U. of I. The Seminole tribes in Florida told the politically-correct crowd to mind their own business because they were proud to be the team name of Florida State. |

Yes, I do call them "the politically correct crowd". That's what other native Americans who don't agree with them call them. I'd call a woman an alleged rape victim until I know differently. Any more questions? |

How many Native Americans ATTEND any of the colleges & sporting events and are TEAM MEMBERS of those institutions that utilize their likeness? I think the ANSWER to that question is the most relevant - and SADDEST - of all points to be made on this issue. |

I don't know how many native americans attend these institutions but I think it might be more than you suspect because Native Americans are also stereotyped as huddled together on reservations, making turquoise jewelery. |

I don't know what "unrequitted" passion is and you can forget the repressed sexual desire bit. And to be frank, I do resent the way chrishayden stoops to attacking the person instead of the argument. |

I agree with those who protest it if only due to the fact that no other group (other than the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, whose mascot is an angry red-haired leprechaun (sp?)) has caricatures or non-caricatures of themselves as mascots.
And they have a good point. I remember this from years ago. They got a lot of attention because of this move. They would have gotten it if they used any other race as a mascot. If they would have had a Native American mascot, no one would have blinked an eye. |

This is a tough one. Who do you follow? At San Diego State, their mascot was called "Monty" because he was an Aztec warrior. Trust me, when the guy who dressed as the Montezuma Indian Aztec warrior, came out on the field , people were screaming! The guy could easily make the cover of Muscle and Fitness (the guy was totally buffed!). He had these colorful feathers, head gear and outfit on that made him look like a super bad ass pumped up warrior. But there was a “small minority” of students who protested. The majority of students (including Mexican and Indian) had no problems with this fierce looking warrior mascot. But as I recall, there was vote taken by the student body as to keep Monty or reform him (or just dump the image). Needless to say, there was an overwhelming majority of students who wanted to keep the Aztec warrior mascot intact. I'm not sure how it all ended because I don't recall. But I personally did not understand the objection to the mascot since he was he looked like a bad ass for the X-Men or a Marvel Comics super hero (e.g. Thor, Black Panther, Black Bolt, Captain America, Dare Devil, et al). But that is my personal perspective. I didn't understand the objection of this small minority of students since there was nothing degrading or negative about this very fierce masculine warrior. But I do respect their objection for whatever their reasons were. |
