I always thought that light-skinned ppl were ppl like Vanessa Williams, Halle Berry, Beyonce, Tyra Banks and Alicia Keyes.

Brown-skinned ppl were Angela Bassett, Sanaa Lathan, Gabrielle Union, and Tatiana Ali.(Which I am).

Dark-skinned ppl were Whoopi Goldberg, Lauryn Hill, Tomiko Frasier, and Alec Wek.

Is that a proper assessment?

I personally don't see how it's at all terribly important, but that's about it, except for Tyra and Halle.

My P.O.V.:

Light skinned--- Lisa Raye, Tisha campbell, alysia Keys... ummmm Can't think of anymore, But IMO "yellow" and "light" are synonymous.

light brown---Beyonce, the cast of "Girlfriends"(minus tracy ellis) , halle berry, sophie Okenedo, cree summer, Jada pinkett.

medium brown (a very BROAD category)--- nia long, Gabrielle union, Regina Hall, queen Latifah, Erikah badu.

Dark brown--- charnelle brown ("kimberly" from a different world), erika alexander, Foxy brown (the rapper), Kelly from "destiny's child", angie stone.

Those are the only ladies I can think of so far.

Dang, Roxie!

First off, the cast of "Girlfriends" includes a ("damn") near white and a dark-skinned female. And I wouldn't catagorize Beyonce, Halle berry, or Jada pinkett as any kind of brown.. not by black people's standards.... Sorry!! I just couldn't resist. And I don't know enough celebrities to create my own list so you'll have to get me back some other way :-)

Tonya,

It's obvious we have different visual concepts of light, medium, and dark brown. But then, a lot of black women do. We just use our own complexions as the standard for comparison.

I never thought Beyonce was high-yellow. I considered her and Hallie and Tyra honey-colored. To me Jada is dark yellow and Tisha Campbell and Alicia Keyes and Lisa Bonet high-yellow. I think Titania Ali and Chili of TLC are coppery, Queen Latifa and Angela Bassett and Mary J, maple colored. Whoopi Goldberg and Fantasia are chocolate brown.

Figuratively speaking, anyone who is "cashew" colored (and variations of yellowish hues) or lighter is considered light-skinned. In the literal sense, anyone who is fair-skinned (i.e., light-bright/brite, pinkish) is virtually undistinguishable from the Caucasian skin hue. A good indicator is to look at the color of the chest and the instep of the foot. Without a tan, the true color will show - and that also accounts for skin that is not normally exposed to sunlight. Oddly enough, many who would pass the brown paper bag test would fail the cashew standard, regardless of any mixed-race or biracial genetic history they may have.

"light brown---Beyonce, the cast of "Girlfriends"(minus tracy ellis) , halle berry, sophie Okenedo, cree summer, Jada pinkett."

this is about right for halle berry...i would consider her light brown. I didn't even know halle was a mixed black woman until about 4 to 5 years ago...i thought she was jsut a light skinned black...didn't know 1 of her parents were white.....i also heard from another messageboard that she described her skin as brown when she was playign queen. she said they had to put make up on ehr to lighten her brown skin tone. In my opinion, i don't see how anyone can classify halle as anything but light brown,,,she sure isn't "high yellah" or red. Maybe they assume that because she's half white that she just has to be a high yellow or red skin tone....people allow their minds to play tricks on them when they hae been conditioned to believe something....it's funny...LOL
