What are your thoughts on rap videos? I personally fill that rap videos are a two-edged sword. On one hand I think they are completly degrading to women. I believe that they reduce black women nothing more than tits and ass. One the other hand I feel that in many ways they make black women look good.

Now, before you get all up in arms about my last statement consider this. How often in the white mainstream media are black women portrayed as beautiful and sexy? How often are black women seen as romantic options for black and non-black men? Black women in the white mainstream media are seen as ugly, overweight, mules, mammies, sapphires, aggressive, masculine, and just plain undersirable. I know many black men like to look at rap videos just to see fine black women. What are your thoughts on this?

P.S Who did Mos Def marry? Is she black or non-black?

Mos Def's wife is black/italian. She is from canada. She looks like an Italian woman.
Mos has lost all credibility in my eyes.

Aggressive and masculine women are JUST PLAIN UNDESIRABLE.!!! But a lot of women turn off their own Black men by persisting on acting in this manner.

Anyways, I don't watch soft-core music videos. I don't find it creative or stimulating in the least.

The themes are repetitive and the women exposed are just pieces of meat. Why women would want to be viewed this way anymore is beyond me.

I don't know who Mos Def married, but he sure is fine! I hope he found him someone intellectually and creatively stimulating. A toast to Mos Def!

I think that most rap videos portray 'barely beige' women as being objects... bodyparts to be used at the beckoning of men, to me this does not equate with desirable. They portray them in a very vulgar way, like prostitutes.

This is not a step up from the historical stereotypes in my opinion.

Rap videos and booty-shakin hotties are a package deal. The music is vulgar and primitive and the dancers act this out. What's needed now is to break the monotony and instead of simply offering eye candy for playas, the choreographers should show a little originaltiy and imagination and introduce some interpretive dancing that would be less degrading to women. Snort. Am I dreamin, or what? LOL.

I totally agree w/ Cynique. These rappers need to think up something original. I find it funny how these music company execs are the main ones speaking out against censorship, meanwhile their pockets are getting fatter and fatter. Also these rappers don't realize that they are the ones being pimped by these music companies. I'm sure these rappers aren't making half as much money as the President, and VP of MCA,Arista,Capitol, and all of these other record companies.

Thank you. And for the most obvious reasons, I understand why. I was looking at Comic View on BET a while back one evening when one of the comedians made jokes about the ignorance and pathetic nature of the late night BET rap videos. Well, I fell asleep and when I woke up (around 02:30 am –I never changed the channel), those videos the comedian was talking about were on. I was shocked! Everything he said was true. I could not believe the level of ignorance, vulgarity, juvenile antics, thuggishness and mindlessness. They are no more than modern day corporate sponsored “coon minstrel shows”. I cannot understand how any black woman could possibly attempt to defend the manner in which they are portrayed and denigrated in these tasteless cheap montages of buffoonery.

Jeez, you actually watch BET'S Comic View??....

That's just as ignorant, vulgar, juvenile, thuggish and mindless as the late night BET rap videos -- talk about “coon minstrel shows”...

I used to "model" in rap videos. I wanted to be an actress but my agents kept sending me on modeling jobs. Paid the bills. Mostly it was boring work. But my images (seen for about a nanosecond) weren't degrading. My family thought I looked cute, and they're super old school and would have killed me if I looked too hoochie. Every part was exactly the same. Dancing with a champagne glass, frolicking on a boat or in a pool. Never was mistreated or disrespected on the set. Don't regret it. Gave me the subject matter for my first novel. Turned down a lot of gigs that I couldn't get with, like "Project Chick" and some other Cash Money stuff. Most videos are boring. And BET Uncut is a travesty. I tried to get into directing and wrote a few treatments, but they were rejected. I guess because I had some original concepts, like people keeping their clothes on.
