Slaves to Multiculturalism?
Written by prodigal child

I spent this past Labor Day weekend at an African Arts & Culture fest on Chicago's Southside. It was 4 days of African and African-American culture — politics, music, dance, clothes, worship, food, art... It was peace 'n' luv like I hadn't seen in a long, long minute. Every tongue of the Diaspora was there — West Indies, Africans, Caribbean Islanders, southern black folk, you name it. It was 4 days of dialoging and sharing of our own cultural fruits with each other. The luv was thicker than the Shea Butter the cats from Mali were selling. It felt like family. But it also got me thinking about multiculturalism and hiphop.

Is the movement that's forcing black folks to embrace multiculturalism actually sacrificing black folks' culture?

You can't turn on the TV or open a book without hearing someone tout multiculturalism. There's multicultural stars like Tiger "Don't call me Black" Woods and Vin "All Of The Above" Diesel. MTV is eating big-time off the multiculti plate — even though they wouldn't play black artists at all in the early 80s. Clubs and radio station formats are multiculti. Fashion is multiculti. The whole world is turning beige.

I peeped a recent Donahue interview with Russell Simmons. Big Rush said whites and non-blacks purchase 80% of all hiphop albums. 80 percent. Add into the mix that some 40% of all hiphop gear like Russell's Phatfarm gear and Diddy's Sean John and Jigga's Rocawear threads. Combine that with the fact that black music (i.e. hiphop, soul, blues, R&B, gospel) black art, black fashion and black entertainment is run by primarily white-owned multinational conglomerates (i.e. Viacom, Universal, Sony, Nike, Disney, etc.) and you have the dynamic of a mostly white consumer-base dictating black culture to white manufacturers and marketers. That's "them" to talking to "them" about what they accept from "us".

I hit a few reggae spots recently and two-thirds of the crowd was Asian and white kids rockin' dreadlocks, drinkin' red stripes and doing their Bob Marley impression. I see the same deal in hiphop, jazz and blues spots all over the world. Remember rock 'n' roll before multiculturalism got hold of it? When black folks were creating it, rock 'n' roll was deamed "race music", "nigger music" and "jungle music". But Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis, Buddy Holly, Pat Boone, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Metallica, Aerosmith and friends come along co-opting it and suddenly, rock 'n' roll is white and acceptable. Remember house music before multiculturalism got hold of it? It was black soulful dance music from Detroit and Chicago. Multiculturalism shows up and suddenly house music becomes "techno" and "drum 'n' bass" and very, very white.

If a Japanese kid, a German kid or a White American kid wants to ignore their heritage to go on cultural safari, that's on them. At least they have the comfort of knowing their culture is still in tact. And when little Samantha Suburbs gets bored with having sex with black guys from the 'hood, she'll settle down and go mainstream. When Trevor Mainstream is ready for a career, he'll pull up his pants, lose the backwards baseball cap and go back to his roots, too. Meanwhile their safari jumping "let's go multiculti" leanings are destroying our cultures.

You can't go to Japan and tell Japanese people what their culture is or what it should be. You can't go to Russia or France or Italy and dictate their culture to them. Can't do it to the British, the Irish or the Spanish or the Greeks. Yet, when it comes to the African Diaspora; from America to the islands to the motherland, everyone else wants to dictate blackness to us, participate in blackness and profit from blackness all in the name of multiculturalism.

But black folks don't have the luxury of playing the multiculti game. We have spent the last 500 years piecing together our identity and heritage. We've been fighting a storm of lies, half-truths and disinformation about what we are, where we're from, what we've done and where we're going. Now, on top of all of this we're supposed to let everyone else co-opt our flavor in the name of unity?

But I can't front. I believe in true multiculturalism — it's a beautiful thing. But what's going on in America is not multiculturalism. Multiculturalism only exists when the cultures that come together are on equal footing. If one culture is respected less, seen as a product/commodity for the rest to control, or viewed as a marketing tool for selling chicken, sneakers, cars and CDs, then it's not multiculturalism — it's cultural colonization. It feels to me like black culture is only accepted when non-blacks get to define it, control it and profit from it.

Multiculturalism seems to be liberal code for "Black culture belongs to us now and we'll define it and use it as we see fit". Culture is the soul of a people. And when you control a people's soul, you control those people. They enslaved us once before. If we're not careful, multiculturalism will be the next set of shackles they throw on us.

Oh, boo-hoo. So should "us" stop eating tacos and pizza and eggs rolls and bagels and sushi and Polish sausages, and quit drinking Latte and Cognac and Beck beer and stop wearing Levis and Tommy Hilfiger and Reeboks and not drive Toyotas, and never listen to Beethoven and make sure to bypass Shakespeare. Or should "us" realize that diversity expands instead of constricts, and that multi-culturism is the one of the more interesting things that America has going for it; it's a relief from the exclusivity of racism.

Cyn and Moon: I think the article is problematizing multiculturalism as praxis--curriculum, popular culture--and multiculuralism as idea. The thrust, as I see it, of the article is stating that black folk do not have ownership of their culture. He or she is differentiating between the monopolization of the idea by profiteers and liberals who produce a watered down multiculuturalism through restaurants, commendeering MLK's birthday for shopping, and teaching course about people of color that vindicate the exceptionalism of US Culture and, on the other hand, the actual integrity of other cultures that have value independent of White Euro-Americans. Prodigal child affirms multiculturalism the idea rather than its present formulation.

Cyn:
I'm not sure how you see racism as it relates to this article. Please if you will explain.

Cynique:

It shows how hollow and bankrupt your vision is that you reduce acceptance and toleration and blending of all cultures to stuffing your face, guzzling booze, strutting around with clothes with manufactuer's names on them (probably fake) and listening to music and attending plays that most white folks don't even bother with.

It is probably because you have given up all hope of anything meaningful and you find solace in wretched symbolism.

To paraphrase Mr. T, another Chicagoan, I don't hate Cyqniue, folks. I pity her.

Cynique, you have potential, but you have lost your way. You are cool but you have no groove. I have been wondering how to straighten you out and I finally figured it out.

I hereby challenge you to a Texas Death Match in a steel cage at Wrestlmania.

Oh drop dead, ChrisHayden. I see things different than you, and you have a problem with anybody who isn't cross-eyed like you. You think that intellectualzing multi-culturalism makes the argument advanced against it profound. What has this man said that hasn't been said over and over ad nauseum. And what is your reason for things not being the way he thinks they should be. blah blah blah. Chrishayden, marching in place, trying to explain the 20th century world to the 21st century, despite the fact that he can't see past his snotty nose. What blubbering jerk.

Yukio, who really does have control of their culture in America???? Why are blacks who want to escape racism and be accepted by the main stream so against sharing their culture? And you act is if there aren't any black entrepreneurs who capitalize off of the popularity of black panache. And as much as you want to disparage the black middleclass, a lot of them are in the business of blackness, not to mention street vendors and hustlers. All of these columnists who think nobody but them is aware of what's going on, just keep talking about who ain't makin it, and act as if all the nonentities in other ethnic groups are doing so great despite the fact that it has been established that in a captialistic society there are the "haves" and the "have-nots". And, tell me, what is the alternative to multi-culturalism? Should all blacks just congregate in one place and shut the rest of the world out while maintining a monopoly on their "culture." Yes, I simplifying the situation, but you are complicating it with a lot of socio-economic theoreums.

Explains it all.

Things that are considered "black" are manufactured by white people, for white kids. And they tell the world it's "black". And we believe them.

And Ms. J from Gambia could come here and wear BLACK clothing made by black people for black people (and at a fraction of the cost of what white manufactured articles cost), and we're ashamed to be seen in it.

Poor Chris. He just can't deal with people who aren't in lock step with his archaic ideas. And his inadequacies reduce him to challenging a female to a smackdown because he's too cowardly to confront another male. And he should be because they kick his sorry ass every time. Go on over in the corner, and read a comic book, Chrissy, you poster boy for arrested development.

cyn: I dont know where your tone came from, but I will respond in like manner.

There is a Euro-American tradition of expropriating other cultures for the purpose of maintaining white supremacy. It is that simple not a "socio-economic theorem."

"Why are blacks who want to escape racism and be accepted by the main stream so against sharing their culture?"

I'm not one of them, so I couldn't answer your question.

Sharing suggests ownership. This version of multiculturalism that prodigal child is criticizing is expropriation.

Perhaps, your equate criticisms of multiculturalism as a desire for segregation. I don't think this is what the article is talking about.

"And you act is if there aren't any black entrepreneurs who capitalize off of the popularity of black panache."

Blacks who capitalize off of "black panache" are guilty. Your point? I'm not acting as if anything. You are ass-u-ming too much.

"And as much as you want to disparage the black middleclass, a lot of them are in the business of blackness, not to mention street vendors and hustlers. "

a)Again, where do you get this rubbish from. At what point did I mention the black middle class? I would hope you are not conflating what was written elsewhere with my position here.
b) Are these people in the business of exploiting blackness or something else? I don't believe that black folk do no wrong (Public Enemy says, referring to the killer of Huey P. Newton "Hand of a nig pulled the trig") Also, one has to differentiating what people are doing on the ground (street vendors et al.) and those who wield read power, such as curriculums, university courses, text books, and advertisers.
c) When I have talked about the middle-class, I was talking about it as a category not everyone who belongs to the middleclass. Perhaps, you have middle-class guilt?

"And, tell me, what is the alternative to multi-culturalism?"

As I stated, Prodigal child envisions a different implementation of multiculuralism, as I do! As I stated, it isn't the idea or concept it is the praxis.

Praxis:ACTION, PRACTICE: as a : exercise or practice of an art, science, or skill b : customary practice or conduct

I am opinionated and an independet thinker and it rubs a lot of people the wrong way because I don't have a cookie-cutter mentality. And, oh yeah. I have no delusions about how white people feel about me, ethiopian. But it doesn't devastate me because the reason I am a survivor is because I don't need the approval of white people to make me feel validated since I'm comfortable with myself. And being the individuial who I am, I like Colin Powell, but I can't stand Codoleeza Rice. That's because I think for myself. Do you, you white-worshipping, ground scratcher?

Nels, yes, this cabal of "group thinkers" who never deviate from the party line should all fall in behind their knock-kneed drum major Chrishayden and stumble on into never-never land. There, in the prison of their sameness, they can talk a good fight and be free from all of those old bad profiteers who are co-opting rap music and the hip-hop vibe. Apparently the sum total of what these mopes consider black culture to be is bad-mouthing women, glorifying violence and wearing droopy clothes and tawdry jewelry and rarely reading a book. Such broad vision. Puleeze. Pardon me while I adapt to the real world and appreciate all of the diversity that makes it an interesting place.

You must be a real tough guy.How about this, tough guy.Instead of challenging an elderly lady why don't you try your luck with me instead?.I will be more than happy to kick you to sleep if you like. I bet your a real bear around a pregnant woman or some little kids or something.Let's see how you do with a grown man.Or are you as cowardly as you are moronic?

He's 55? I would have thought that he'd secure himself a Darwin award long before he reached that age. Nothing short of divine intervention could have prevented him from wandering out in front of a slow moving train or something. Vegas has set the odds at 5 to 2 with you as the favorite, btw.:-)

Aw shucks, Anunaki3600. Aint nothin to it, really. I just eat razor blades for breakfast, and when folks who can dish it out, but can't take it, decide to attack Cynique, they're in for a good slashing. BTW, I think a wrestling match between the ethiopian and chrishayden should be staged. They could call it the clash of the losers.

Jail is not where you and I will meet.Jail is where I will probably be after you and I meet. But who knows? To Libralind2,we're just playing.Nothing to be taken seriously.I was actually thinking of inviting Chris over for dinner some evening. He could bring his boyfriend and we could play bridge.
Chris, you might want to consider how that's going to look in papers.I can see it now. "Chris Hayden, gay author of nothing noteworthy, found wandering the streets semi-conscious with a push broom and boxer shorts lodged in his colon."That might be a little hard to explain to your fan.

Chris, since you are obviously as lacking in wit as you are in intelligence, I suppose that I will have to spell it out for you.I have come to inspire you and deliver you from your wretched practise of dumbing down the outline of The Lord of the Rings for a living.Your next novel is to be titled Nothing Noteworthy, a gripping and suspenseful tale of how the man you know that I am saves the galaxy from the machinations of the man you fear that I am and his lackey, the disgusting little pervert you pray that I become, with the aid of the counsel of the Noble Ancient One you hate that I become. The last lines of the book are to have the protagonist return to his home to have his lovely wife ask him "So how was your day? Anything interesting happen?" A far better read than if you come from the heart with something like A Fairy Tail.If you need more details, ascend Olympus and there you shall find me.

To Chris: The bad guy has figured out a way to fold the space/time continuum over on itself many times over in a specific location. His plan is to do that to the supermassive black hole at the center of the milky way, causing the black hole at countless times in it's history to be present at the same place and time, thereby increasing it's Schwarzschild radius by several orders of magnitude. This will cause it to go on a 'feeding frenzy', since the Schwarzschild radius is directly proportional to the mass, to re-achieve equilibrium.Soon, all matter in the galaxy would be accellerated to near-light speeds and the supermassive black hole would swallow the entire galaxy in a few hundred years. He, of course, plans to bail through a conveniently located worm hole, allowing him to escape to the crab nebula.
To Cynique,Lord of the Rings has been one of my favorites (like many other people)for years.Actually, chess is my main game, but I dearly love bridge against suitably proficient opponents.I don't really see bridge enjoying the popularity it once did, though.Kind of sad, really.

The article is very good and I'm in agreement with it.

It's not much different than what Toni Morrison and a lot of others have been saying.

And like Egypt's Nawal El Sadaawi, I think the American concept of "multiculturalism" is a farce and basically enables White Supremacy and dictates to the masses what is "black" and erases blackness at the same time.

Multiculturalism is yet another grand DUPE for those who've been duped since this country started, and that includes the naive White women right along with us blacks.

I'm blessed that my children's father is of a like mind with me and helps me to FENCE our family in.

We give others their FREEDOM and playing field and we live our lives in OUR TRUTH, separately.

You're pretty stupid yourself, Serenasailor, if you think that everyone who doesn't agree with Kola is ignorant. Your comment has absolutely no point of reference and is a response to a thread started in October of last year. Get with the program, airhead. There are always 2 points of view and you sound like one of those people who becomes discombobulated if someone challenges what you've convinced yourself of as being true. You obviously are not serene, Serena, and as a sailor you sound like you're drowning in a sea of illusions.

Anyway I am not going to spend my time debating with the likes of you Cynique. However, I will say that Multi-culturalism is a sham in the fact that white ppl are the ones controlling it. Have you ever noticed how whites are more accepting of other ethnic groups such as Asians, and latinos? Have you ever noticed that white ppl when they talk about multiculturalism they will purposely excluded blacks. Multiculturalism means every race has an equal footing. It doesn't mean that white ppl can pick and chose what races of ppl they will include and which ones they won't. White ppl are more willing to accept Asians and Hispanics into their communities, schools, and will even intermarry with them. But for some reason they still denounce intergration with blacks. Multiculturalism is really a totem pole in which whites have created. Whites on top, Asians second, Hispanics third, and blacks on the very bottom. The tricky thing about this is that you can't accuse white ppl of racism, because hey! They have their token minorities.(I.e Asians and Latinos). Don't believe multiculturalism it is a SHAM!!
