Hi, it's Kola.

ABM, I saw your message. I love you, too, King and I miss you so much. I wish you and Destined and the girls all your favorite things this season and I thank God that your family exists (if you haven't seen the film "Pursuit of Happyness" starring Will Smith, then I INSIST that you go see it at once and take your whole family--it's my favorite movie this year! You just MUST see it, ABM).

You blessed me so many ways over the years, my friend, and I am grateful to have your acceptance and your attempts at understanding. You just really always touched and strengthed me. Thank you.

TONYA, thanks for your kind words about not learning anything since I've been gone...which is overstated, because you're so intuitive and brilliant yourself baby sister (I love you so much for your support and for accepting that I'm not perfect :-) )...

I would have made contact with you as I have Renata, but your email stopped working so I have no way of getting messages to you unless I come to this board--and frankly--the demands of my real life when mixed with the constant and pointless combativeness on this board was zapping my spirit and dimming my energy, so I could not post here. It was beginning to affect me "physically" and I was already very ill as you know.

You know~~

People change...I am aging and mellowing in some ways; I am also under constant scrutiny and attack from many larger more powerful forces than the enemies I have here...so the frisky/snappy person I was just two years ago is not the same person I am today...I have a LOT of work to do, I have to raise my kids and I have a lot of dreams that I want to see come true...I just don't feel like fighting and being hated on every moment, so it's not that I don't want to be here or couldn't make time---it's just that I gain nothing by coming/being here. I know you understand, Tonya.

Merry Christmas Libralinda :-), my sister Renata, Yvette, Serenasailor (I love you so much Serenasailor for being a man who honors and attempts to understand black women), Doberman23 (with your bad self!), Sisgal and Chris Hayden, my dearest one-DAYHOMESI (I probably messed up your name, but I'm not good with the West African names), sweet kind Zuriburi thanx for your spirit, BrownBeauty123, Tall_Brother, Blackmalereading, Soul Sister, Emanuel, TROY JOHNSON and Michael T. Owens...Merry Christmas. I love you.

If you wish anything for me...just pray that I have a better year next year and that I will finally be recognized for my talent and my contributions in a respectful manner. Pray for me to have good health and peace of mind. Those would be wonderful, wonderful gifts.

I wanted to share this
special poem that I wrote for my
sons...it's from my book "The White
Man's Mother
" and I mean it for all
our sweet babies.

DRUM: The Woman Behind

Child,

I wanted you

My breasts were full of milk and honey
I wanted you

When you die
I will see you living

Tired hungry
Soulless soul

When you die
I am the one

I will see you living

Child,
Boy,
Girl,
Man,
Woman,
Thing of Beauty
Black Thing...

The only dream I've ever had
The only
Dream/I ever had

I wanted you

Don't forget everyone
...treat yourself and your
families, especially our
little boys
to Will Smith's new movie
"The Pursuit of Happyness".
You'll be so glad you did.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Howdy Kola!!!

I'm very happy to see you and yours are doing well this Holiday Season. The girls and I are doing fine.

:-)

I have seen Pursuit of Happyness. I enjoyed immensely. And I even created a thread here in honor of it: http://www.thumperscorner.com/discus/messages/179/18653.html?1166889552

Interestingly, there appear to be A LOT of foks who believe Pursuit is attempting to make some untoward socio-political arguments (e.g., negative or unfair assertions about Black mothers) that elude me.

Although I greatly miss your being here, I can understand why you'd avoid posting. Afterall, inspite of all the wonderful things you are you are also still very much a girl who longs to be liked by all for who and what you are.

ABM, you know I don't care about being liked. It's really just that I'm weary (tired) and where AS most people are living a single life, my career vs. family vs. political obligations vs. spiritual needs vs. fame vs. romantic aspirations....requires me to live SEVERAL lives in one lifetime, and now that I'm feeling my age, it's really a burden--so a lot of the petty stuff I used to revel in, I just don't have the energy or interest in anymore.

Not to mention--there were reporters and a biographer who began scoping the board in hopes of writing (twisting) things about me.

I wish that Destined really knew me, because she would trust us to email or chat. But maybe one day.

As for "Pursuit of Happiness"...I just think that this movie presents us with something so rare and gravely important, that we can't afford to knit pick over whatever small imperfections there might be. That's what I mean by being tired--I've been a crusader/activist/fighter for so long ABM that I just want to cut out the B.S. and receive that which is truly important, helpful or empowering. This film is NEEDED "sociologically". We need more images like this for black men.

Just imagine if Will Smith makes it "cool" to be a black father willing to die for the opportunity to raise his child to adulthood. Just imagine!

I mean in the midst of all these 50 Cents, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg and Taye Diggs bullshit (ALL SELFISHNESS)---can't we just have one "Pursuit of Happiness"?

In my true, true SECRET heart of hearts---I don't love all Black men anymore as a "group"; I don't see them as I once did as an African woman, daughter and wombbearer--I honestly see them as just White Men with less power and more abusive, prejudice and hateful towards us than white men.

But I do greatly love my father, my children's father, my brothers, you and so many other black men who have been heroes in my life---and I believe that the way I once saw black men could be brought into being---if I just focus on that small part of love that IS THERE and cultivate THAT PART.

We have to begin to plant a seed of hope...even if we will not see/enjoy the benefits in our lifetimes. We need to do this for our children.

This film helps me to do that and I pray that black men will get the access/power to bring us more of these portrayals. We need it.

I really hate to go, because now I just want to chat with you forever (I am crying, because I'm happy to be back friends with you).

Today, although I'm not one for christmas, I begin cooking my christmas dinner and that's my favorite time to cook is the holidays. I will be thinking of you and daydreaming that I'm making these dishes for you to taste--that way I will cook even better.

God bless you and please pray for me to find the strength and energy I need to continue on.

Contrary to the exterior, ABM, I am far from being a "strong" woman.

The important thing....is that YOU like me, and that's enough. :-)

Kola,

I think you care more about being liked than you'll say. You're just strong enuff to do what you must inspite of that. But I can understand how and why your varied obligations would tax your energies to the point of wanting to avoid unnecessary, trivial conflict.

I am really quite amazed by the polemics of Pursuit of Happyness. I mean, when I consider ALL the media that regularly coarsens, demeans and villifies the imagery of Black men, I can't see why there would be such resentment towards a (albeit small) effort to do otherwise. But...Oh well.

I wish you well, my lovely friend. Take care of yourself Kola. :-)
