From the New York Times:
"Today, one in five black men in New York City between 40 and 49 has H.I.V. or AIDS"
The stats for West Africa. Even Nigerian men are less likely to be HIV+ than African American men in NYC.
"West Africa on the other hand has been much less affected by the pandemic, several countries reportedly have prevalence rates around 2-3% and no country has yet rates above 10%, although in two of the region's most populous countries, Nigeria and Côte d'Ivoire, between 5 and 7% of adults are reported to carry the virus."
Here's another excerpt:
It is possible that the high incarceration rates for African American men could be an important factor in the epidemic because of injecting drug use and unprotected sex in prison institutions. The main route of transmission for women is through heterosexual sex, and the main risk factor for them is non-protection and the undisclosed risky behaviour of their sexual partners. African American women are 19 times more likely to contract HIV than white women |

Abm, here are some stats that are more specific and here's the website they are taken from: http://www.nyc.gov/html/doh/html/ah/ah.shtml
* 1 in 40 African Americans.
* 1 in 25 men living in Manhattan.
* 1 in 12 black men age 40-49 years.
* 1 in 10 men who have sex with men.
* 1 in 8 injection drug users.
* 1 in 5 black men age 40-49 in Manhattan.
* 1 in 4 men who have sex with men in Chelsea.
The bottom line appears to be that 2.5% of black Americans are HIV+. Those stats alone are up their with many African countries. Specifically in Manhattan, 4% of the overall male populationn (including whites and other races) aged 40-49, is HIV+. In Manhattan, 20% of black males aged 40-49 are HIV+. That is crazy high
In America as a whole, 1 in 12, or just over 8% of black men aged 40-49, are HIV+. So, that is a higher rate than in anywhere in West Africa.
We as a people clearly need to do something about this. This is freakin crazy. We really need to come out of denial.
Also, these statistics don't even include everyone who is HIV+. Many of them won't admit it, especially us black people.

That's very old news.
Even if many West African countries have prevalence rates that are "just" around 2-3% that is still HORRIBLE!!!!!!!

But not as horrible as the situation right here in the USA where we have access to way more sex education and where condoms are very readily available and we KNOW better.........

Thanks for posting the link to the article you cited.
You do know that in your initial post you mistakenly cited "New York City" where "Manhattan" belonged.
The stats are suppose to account for ALL of the people included within demographics that are being cited. But since not every American - White, Black or Brown - is regularly tested for HIV, the stats can only be, at best, good estimations based on statistical methodologies which are only as reliable as the researchers and mathemeticians who perform them.
And I don't know enuff about the criteria and reliability of West African public health policies and statistics to contrast such with what how African Americans suffer from HIV. |

Too many people blame the spread of HIV solely on "down low" or gay men or drug users.....but they don't consider the completely straight guy who's sleeping around with many women, only one of whom may have been in a relationship with someone with AIDS.
Seriously, if a man has 5 baby mamas, he's a HIGH RISK to sleep with, I don't care how straight he is. All that's needed is for him to have ONE girlfriend with a drug abusing or bi ex, and that's how you get so many more women getting AIDS now. They figure if their boyfriend isn't on the dl, he's clean....they don't consider that maybe his exes or their exes weren't so clean. |

Women....just THINK of that the next time you get a boyfriend. If he has numerous children with more than 1 or 2 women, and he wasn't married to them when they got the children, THE MAN DON'T WEAR CONDOMS, and apparently HIS EXES DON'T CARE ABOUT CONDOMS. So you're basically putting your health not only in the hands of your boyfriend, but in the hands of his exes and whoever they slept with. Now if you can trust ALL of them and know all of them were clean, go ahead. |
