Janet Jackson's Boyfriend Quits Job Over Her

Janet Jackson's boyfriend, producer Jermaine Dupri, is out at Virgin Records.

Dupri was head of urban music at Virgin. But late yesterday, according to my sources, Dupri quit—i.e. was forced out—after disappointing sales of Jackson's comeback album called "20 YO."

Three weeks into its release, the album is a dud with less than 500,000 copies sold. I told you in this space last week, before anyone else, that the CD had dropped an astonishing 77 percent in sales in its second week.

For Jackson, this is especially painful since '20 YO' was the last album on her Virgin contract. She now faces the task of negotiating a new deal with little leverage.

Dupri was partially responsible along with Randy Jackson ("American Idol" fame, not the brother) for making Mariah Carey's "Emancipation of Mimi" album a monster hit. With Janet, he opted to make her into something she couldn't be at age 40—a hip hop diva—rather than present her as an adult star. Kids did not flock to her, and adults didn't want to hear it.

At the 11th hour there was talk of Mariah possibly re-recording one of the '20 YO' songs with Janet to resuscitate the album. But with Dupri gone, '20 YO' will probably just get written off as a mistake now. This will leave Jason Flom, head of Virgin, to rebuild the urban department at the label—something I'm told he's been itching to do since he took over last year.

Well, looks like it's official. Janet's a has-been. Stick a fork in her; she's done.

I guess this is a case of "what have you done for me lately?" What record company in its right mind would let a hitmaker like JD go?

As for Janet, she will be fine. At one time Mariah was considered dead, crazy, unsellable.

Janet has to re-define herself, for sure. Americans love a good, juicy comback.

Maybe JJ should adopt an African orphan to change her luck?

Robynmarie,

Mariah's younger than Janet. Plus, unlike Janet, Mariah can actually SING.

She should have stopped fooling herself, gave up the music and focused on acting. Because had she done that, she might be a bonified movie star by now.

Janet's made out on dancing and appearing joyfully young. She's no longer young. And the Ciara's of the world would dance her old a$$ off the stage.

She needs to get rid of JD and find a REAL hitmaker.

like i said on the "has janet lost her mojo" thread, janet just cannot compete with the younger r&b "divas" of the moment.

her first mistake was trying to pass her self off as a "hot, young, 20-something". she is just not young anymore. the younger r&b singers (ciara, beyonce, etc) just knock janet out of the box.

mariah carey is actually a good singer, and she is younger than janet jackson is. janet really needs to "reinvent" her public persona.

but i actually think its too late.

janet had her time in the sun.

now its over.

janet jackson is done.

take her out of the oven, and throw her away.

there is no comeback in her future.

I wonder if it would have made a difference if she hadn't used her boyfriend, and instead asked Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis to produce her album.

Well, MC really isn't that much younger than JJ. MC's 36 and JJ's 40, so I think the real determining factor between the two is the fact that MC CAN sing.

I always felt that JJ was a better actress than singer anyway. Perhaps she'll hang up the music career after this flop and focus more on her acting. I think she still has an audience out there that will continue to follow her career. I don't feel she's "finished" just yet.

Well, in case you forgot - Ms. Janet was getting ready to star in an autobiographical film about Ms. Lena Horne when the SuperBowl episode occurred. After which Ms. Horne forbade Ms. Janet from being in her film.

Actually, I never heard about her tentatively starring in a film about Ms. Horne. I don't follow JJ's career all that close. But I did hear about the "wardrobe malfunction" at the Superbowl - I think THE WHOLE WORLD heard about that. LOL! I remember hearing that she had gained weight for a role in some film but then the film was made and she wasn't in it. Is that the same film?

No, those were two separate projects. I can't imagine Ms. Janet requiring extra pounds to portray Ms. Horne. Anyway, it was big news at the time. If my memory serves there was a photo spread of Ms. Janet in Vogue (or some such ritzy mag) all dressed and made up to resemble Ms. Horne. She was absolutely gorgeous. I think this may be one of the pix - not positive though.

And the story:

Abm-

Since when does not being able to sing stop anyone from being a star? Janet needs to redefine her image or pursue an acting career, (like Cher) as was suggested. Perhaps she should do small theater or produce her own film projects, the way Vivica Fox does.
Her show biz career is far from over.
 @ Lena Horne.

janet should change her style up for a more mature crowd, she's still trying to use the same formula as mariah carey so there music sounds the same (although ya'll wont admit it mariah is a better singer). she needs to switch all the way to 100% r&b and leave that pop stuff alone, because teenagers aren't trying to hear 40 year olds, no matter how much they try to slut it up (which i particularly like, but think she should have done much sooner than her superbowl tit show).

Janet should pander to her fan base. The people who have listened to her music since the beginning. If she just did that one simple thing, she would continue to have mass appeal.

Whatever Janet does, she and her contemporaries should consider her flop as a wake-up call. Getting by on your reputation is a thing of the past. In this fast-paced world, the fickle record-buying public has a short memory and a famous artist's lack luster album is no match for the latest boooty-shakin flash-in-the-pan. Longevity is the name of the game in show biz and you don't acquire it by taking your success for granted. You stay current and fresh. On her last album Janet should have dueted with somebody like Usher and even featured a cut where she supplied the sampling for a performance by a rapper.

janet used to be in my top ten (i would do list)
then she was pushed out by younger fresher entertainers. i don't even know if i'd holla at janet now ... ok, i would but i wouldn't put up with any craziness that i would've had she been hotter.
