I have been hearing a lot about this project:
http://www.joinred.com/home.asp

What do you think: helpful or just a drop in a (massive) barrel? True desire to help or fashionable charity? I have to admit: the red Nanos just look cool. I gotta wonder, though--Wouldn't it be better if I didn't buy it and sent the whole $200+ to fight AIDS in Africa? (Versus buy it and have a mere $10 donated.) But then again, if this is something I would buy anyway, why not buy so that $10 can be used for good?

Hmm. The complications of being a privileged first world citizen...

Yvettep,

Sometimes it's helps to use the trivial (e.g., trinkets, songs, catch phrases, etc.) to lure the masses of foks into doing something they otherwise would NOT do.

I think it's a good thing. It's gotten a great deal of publicity so far with Oprah and Larry King. Several big name corporations are participating and the products look really good. I predict that this venture will be a huge success.

The only drawback that comes to mind is that whole Crips/Bloods thing. There are people who will not be associated with the color red for any reason.

As far as the percentage of the proceeds that actually goes to the cause, that's the way it is with all charities. There is so much expense involved with administrative fees that only a tiny portion of what is donated ends up helping the intended recipient.

We could probably wipe out nearly every affliction and all poverty if only there was a way to eliminate the voluminous bureaucratic expense of operating a charity.

Maybe they'll come out with a "blue" project next, some popular item that comes in blue and which the proceeds from selling it will go toward finding an AIDS vaccine. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
