I love the cover of Kola Boof's new poetry collection.

It shows two black men having a beer in lounge chairs. One of the men is Kola's husband and she is sitting on the ground between his legs cutting up food. She looks very pretty and has a big smile.

I sent her an email asking permission to reprint one of the poems from the book last night, but she hasn't responded yet.

The poem is called "My Baby Must Be A Magician" and its subtitled 'for my sons about their father'.

As soon as Kola emails me permission I will print it.

The poems in this book are very deep and powerful. I have mixed feelings, because many of them are extraordinarily painful to read on a number of levels, but the book moves me in a way that is hard to express. I hope that Kola's vision of black love, as she calls it "a seed that she came here to plant and die", will take root for us.

Oh, the title of the book is "The White Man's Mother"--meaning Africa.

Nolanfane, we'll be looking forward. :-)

And tell Kola we all said hello the next time you talk to her. Tell her how much she’s missed.

Hell, I wish I could talk to her. She won't return any of my messages. I wanted to interview her.

I saw her sing at rehearsals in L.A. this past week and I got an advance copy of her new book, but they wouldn't let anybody get near her. She didn't look too healthy but she sounded good singing.

To be honest, I didn't like her at all until I heard her sing and now I read the poetry. I've ordered one of her novels. I like good strong Afro writers and she's pretty impressive. "Important" even.

I don't agree with most of her ideas but something about her haunts a brother. I just like her, but I don't know why.

Yeah she is going to sing on her book tour.

She sounds like Diana Ross. I mean "just" like her. She was upset about the arrangements and kept telling the vocal coach that she doesn't want to sound like Diana Ross or people will think she's copying, so they practiced ways to make her not sound like Ross.

To me she still sounded like her. LOL.

(1) Anyone know how long it typically takes Kola Boof to answer her email?

(2) I see she posted some of her other poems around the place. Do you think she would be angry if I posted the one?

Thank you Kola Boof. This is a bad ass poem:

My Baby Must Be a Magician
(*for my sons about their father)

Each time it ends (I come back to life)

Forward sea

Leaping swords and flags sailing
salt

Blood/Salt/time

Black man hands/My heart.

Forward sea

Each time it ends

Becoming more and more of itself

...my string of pearls

Each time it ends (forward sea)

Un-winged and still flying

Chest like a wall/Heart like a crash.

Forward sea.

Anemones and still circling,

(each time it ends)

Until I can’t

see
