`PORTRAIT OF A SUBCULTURE'
Dredlocks hold meaning for whites, too
TONYA JAMESON

When it comes to dredlocks, it seems more whites keep it real than blacks.

I reached that conclusion after watching "Dreadheads: Portrait of a Subculture," a documentary being screened at the Neighborhood Theatre on Wednesday about white kids who lock their hair. They talk about dredlocks as a physical symbol of their individuality and desire to live outside of society's norms.

I had my first real encounter with dredlocks at the University of Alabama in the mid-'90s. A fellow student named Francine shaved off her hair and grew dredlocks. I marveled at her patience as her hair went through the matted, unkempt phase that occurs when hair locks naturally. She talked about her hair as if it were a being, about the energy embodied in her locks.

Prior to this, I saw dredlocks how my parents and many older blacks saw them. Dredlocks were dirty, and they were for people who smoked lots of weed. Watching Francine's locks grow, and listening to lots of Bob Marley, changed my perception.

I began to see blacks with dredlocks as rebels -- the style was my generation's version of the fist-in-the-air afros of the '70s. However, I had no respect for whites who locked their hair. To me, they were once again imitating our culture, wanting to be like us without the burden that comes with the hue of our skin.

But in the past few years, I've become less annoyed by dredlocked whites mostly because I don't hold locks in high esteem anymore. For too many blacks, dredlocks are a hairstyle like the Jeri Curl. Some people are willing to pay professionals hundreds of dollars to lock their hair because they don't have the patience to let their hair lock naturally.

"Dreadheads: Portrait of a Subculture" showed me that although white kids with dredlocks do mimic black culture, for some of them the decision to grow locks is still an act of rebellion.

The documentary chronicles dredlocked whites who travel the country listening to jam bands, such as Widespread Panic and the String Cheese Incident. (They will take over the parking lot of Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre this weekend when Widespread Panic performs there.)

The reasons white jam band fans lock their hair range from no longer wanting to comb it to rebelling against our button-down culture to wanting to feel spiritually connected to the Earth.

"It was my way of letting go of vanity," said a woman with reddish locks down her back. "It was a way to get back to a natural way of being."

The movie is about 15 minutes too long and focuses a little too much on the jam band culture, but it answered the one question I wanted to know: Yes, some people who lock do get lice.

I also was surprised to learn that among whites who dred, like blacks, some are purists. Some look down on people who use beeswax because that's not as natural as letting their hair mat on its own. They get offended when people ask them how they "got" their locks.

The documentary also examined society's reaction to whites with dredlocks. One woman said parents clutch their children tightly when she passes them on the street. Another talked about being stared at in the supermarket. A couple recounted incidents of being stopped by police for DWD -- Driving While Dred.

"Dreadheads" gave me more respect for some white kids who lock, but I have little sympathy for those who encounter harassment. When they cut their hair, they will still be white and enjoy all the privileges that come with not being black.

I hope they use their cultural status to help those who can't simply cut their hair to make discrimination go away.

Troy, I understand where you are coming from in reference to blacks not having knowledge of the essence of what having locks is about. The term dreadlocks, derived from the english. They feared these people who maintained their african culture and heritage who wore "locks". So they added the word dread in front. The actual name of these people that we have come to know them as are the "maroons". They were the ones who escaped capitivity and ran up into the mountains of Jamaica and some of the other islands. At night they would come down and slay the european explorers, and slave masters. This is why to this day for the european the idea of locks is mystical, mesmorizing, but yet sinnister in nature.
Alot of people assume that dreads come from Jamaica, when in fact the origins come from Ethiopia. It just so happens that miraculously a group of people were able to escape, run into the mountains and maintain their culture. You can find this history of locks in the Bible and Qu'ran. In the Bible, King Solomon speaks about his locks. Jesus and Moses also had locks. His hair was like wool. And we know that in this time all men who were students of higher learning could not cut their hair, b/c it was a source and symbol of strength.Priests could not cut their hair either. Take a look at the story of Samson and Galieth(spelling?). King Tut also had locks. This can be verified by looking at the tombs and casket shapings.
You mentioned whites having more knowledge and respect for this way of life than alot of blacks who look at it as just as a hairstyle. Well, it's the same with music. Blacks created jazz. But whites are the ones who follow it today mostly.
I am 35yrs old and have been studying history since I was 14yrs old. I started locking when I was 18, and I cut them when I turned 26 b/c it was becoming a fashion style. But also the negative attention and stereotypes that black males face, was another important reason for me cutting them off. By this time they were past my shoulders. From there I went to getting my hair corn rolled. Soon this started to become a fashion as well, so three months ago I decided that I would keep my hair in a caesar. For the most part people do not take brothers with corn braids in their hair seriously. I'm hood, but i'm an intellectualist as well and sadly enough for black males how we choose to wear our hairstyle has alot to do with how we are precieved in society. Especially in a professional setting.

Theroneshellman,
Good post. But you sound as if the same discrimination doesn't apply to black females where hair style is concerned.

Black women are not only stereotyped and treated with contempt for wearing their hair natural by white people, but by black people as well. Especially black males, who love to complain of how they are discriminated against. Yet look down upon and discriminate against black women as much if not more than anyone else for wearing/having black hair styles/textures, among other things.

I've hear blacks (especially bm) accuse bw of being unfeminine, ugly and everything else for having black textured hair. Then they turn around and criticize and accused of being a wannabe with no black pride for wearing weaves and straightening their hair.

Society also looks down on bw and think they are not professional looking unless they straighten their hair or wear a weave and mimic ww. At least bm aren't under pressure to straighten their hair the way black women are or have their gender or looks insulted for not looking like a European is supposed to look.

”Black women are not only stereotyped and treated with contempt for wearing their hair natural by white people, but by black people as well.”

Unfortunately, this is true. Black women do take a beating because of their hair. I know Japanese and Filipino women think black women’s hair is horrible. I’ve heard the comments! When I lived in Japan, I knew three Japanese women who actually believed no black woman could grow hair longer than five inches. They simply could not believe it. When I showed them pictures of black women who had naturally long hair styles –they still could not believe it. They were stunned! They were not being racist, they were ignorant and just never saw a black woman in person who was not wearing a weave or wig. So they didn’t know.

”Especially black males, who love to complain of how they are discriminated against.”

Well, black men are discriminated against. What? You didn’t know this?

” Yet look down upon and discriminate against black women as much if not more than anyone else for wearing/having black hair styles/textures, among other things.”

That’s not completely true. I see black women with dreads and naturals often they have black men with them. I have no idea what your experiences are but mine contradict your groundless generalizing. Yes, there are black men who do not appreciated dreads or naturals. This is true. But there are black men who have no problems (like me) with black women wearing their hair in natural hair styles. How you have missed them is beyond me.

”I've hear blacks (especially bm) accuse bw of being unfeminine, ugly and everything else for having black textured hair. Then they turn around and criticize and accused of being a wannabe with no black pride for wearing weaves and straightening their hair.”

Yeah…right. The ultimate contradiction and duality. I got it…..

Society also looks down on bw and think they are not professional looking unless they straighten their hair or wear a weave and mimic ww. At least bm aren't under pressure to straighten their hair the way black women are or have their gender or looks insulted for not looking like a European is supposed to look.”

Hmmmmmmm……Ok. I guess it seems that way. People have personal preferences and choices. I guess black women with nappy hair draws more thumbs down and faces of disapproval than straight hair. Maybe since the overwhelming number of people in the world have straight hair, nappy hair is something they can’t get used to or accept. Black people have to look to each other and support our natural genetics and not worry about what other races think. What other recourse is there?

But you are correct, there are blacks who have problems with black hair in its natural state. Imagine the courage and resilience Nina Simone had when she went natural back in the 1950’s! I always admired her courage for this. And as expected, her harshest critics and detractors were black people.

I have a personal friend who was a roommate with Angela Davis at UCSD in the 60’s and she told me Angela introduced her to wearing her hair natural. She told me her parents lost their minds when she showed up with an Afro. They threatened to cut off her financial support if she did not stop the nonsense.

And I had a friend of mine who at the time was a medical surgeon in Chicago. Like me, he was a Scotch man and one evening we were experimenting with some very tasty Scotches and he said, “You know something, I really feel sorry for black women and their nappy ass hair. It’s like a curse. I mean, it’s like having a third eye in the middle of your head. It’s so sad.” Those were his exact words! So yeah, some black people have issues with black women’s hair. What is one supposed to do…..?

I've been to Japan and I know the women there are well aware of black women's hair and are racist toward bw. Those that run hair salons there that specialize in black hair would intentionally f*uk up their hair by over processing it. Every bw I knew that went to their salon with a healthy full and lengthy head of hair came back with it broken off and bald patches.

In my experience Filipino women there have been especially jealous and prejudice toward bw but got their lessons from hateful azz negros they've been involved with.

Of course bw with fully natural hair, especially if they are taking meds or birth control may more likely have hormonal imbalances that affect hair growth. The fact their hair is very curly just makes those problems seem more pronounced. But they affect all types of hair. But people with straight hair usually experience more thinning and dullness. Their length may be affected also but people will assume they just chose a short style.

Igbogirl,

There are far MORE Black women trying to get their hair to look like that of Asian women than their are of Asian women trying to go nappy.

Hell. At least HALF the Black chicks I see these's days have dead Korean hair in their heads.

My old friends from Japan may not be a good example of them as a whole because they've lived OUTSIDE of Japan for a while (two even lived in Africa for a while and said that they loved it there). These PARTICULAR guys seemed to like natural women more than they liked relaxed hair. As a matter of fact, I've never met a Japanese guy who dated a girl with a hair weave.

When I was going out with my ex, my own hair was natural and QUITE short.....while he had hair to his waist....I'm sure we turned some heads. When we met, my hair was past my shoulders and relaxed. When I cut it, he said, "you look so different now", and that was the only time he mentioned anything about my hair, ever.

One of them had pictures of when he lived in Kenya, and he had DREDLOCKS! I was so shocked. His hair was that really silky straight hair that can hardly bend on the ends. I have NO IDEA how he got that to lock! He said that he had a friend in Kenya do it because he didn't know how.

If I had the height/neck of Grace Jones or any model, I would probably still be wearing my own hair short.

Abm,
Apparently there weren't that many bw in Japan. And in Japan, their people are very prejudice against outsiders, especially blacks, owing businesses there - unless it’s a powerful white owned corp. And most blacks aren't going to be there that long unless it’s the bi-racial orphans born there who are treated as out casts. Stop being ignorant okay; you know exactly what the deal is. Black men playing ignorant in their communication with bw is half the root of our problems.

My ex didn't have the locks, another friend of mine did. My ex had straight hair to his waist.

My friend, Hiroshi, didn't do anything for a living but live off of mama and daddy's money. He also lived in England for a while. He moved back to Japan because his parents were freaking out that he wasn't going to college. The last time I heard from him, he was trying to be a comedian in Osaka.

Renata,

Think for a second: Why would a non-Black man who's interested in dating a woman of a different race appreciate such a woman donning fake hair? I mean, it seems to me, part of what would the man to the woman to begin with would be how she DIFFERS from what he's most familiar with.

I REALLY think that it would be in the long-term best interest of Black women to STOP of straigtening and perming. Because it cheapens and diminishes the beauty of Black women overall.

Shemika,

If there are not many Black people in Japan. And those few who are there are not there for very long, why the hell should a Japanese stylist waste his/her time trying to learn to properly style Black hair.

The shyt ain't personal...it's BUSINESS!

Abm, Why do you nikkas insist on turning every conversation into an excuse for non whites and everyone else to treat bw like shyt and a blame game aimed at bashing bw? Is that just business?

I think that if some black people may sometimes stay in Japan a year or two, some more, and it's common sense that they share word of mouth, it would be business to want to do a good job and have a good reputation to bring in more customers. It's just damn racist to intentionally f*ck up their hair to the point of chemically burning their scalp or intentionally cut it all off when they only asked for a 1 inch trim.

Shemika,

If a handful of Korean chick stroll their a$$es into your local Black-owned beauty salon, there's a better than even shot the sistas are going to fuhk their heads up. Why? Because they SELDOM do Korean hair. Now. Are those sistas going to make a point to become especially skilled at doing Korean hair? Hell naw. Why should they spend time and resources learning to become expert in what 1 in +300 of their customers might require. And that doesn't include the other different cultural expectations that Black and Korean women.

Sometimes things are NOT just about hate and race. Some shyt is just about sheer PRACTICALITY.

Now if you're arguing that, say, 1 in 4 or more of the Japanese's clients are Black, then I'd feel what you're saying. But it seems to me what you're doing is here is simply dredging up ANOTHER fallacious reason to rag about how put-upon Black women are.

ABM, I actually agree with you on the hair thing. One big reason I cut my hair one of those times is because I was seriously thinking about going to Japan and KNEW they wouldn't know how to do my hair. It's the same reason, with all of our integration, you wouldn't see me go to a white salon to get my hair done. Whether they hate me or not, they just won't know how to do my hair.

Heck, when I've gone to a korean shop and bought a new shampoo, I would ALWAYS ask another black woman shopping there what her recommendations were instead of asking the clerk.

Igbogirl, your analogy is right on point!!

If the salon bills itself as specializing in styling Black hair, then it should be able to do that.

If that is what you said within your initial post, I apologize for missing that.

Now. Why don't you explain to me WHY we've exchanged all these post WITHOUT your re-citing that salient point.

Could it be that YOU'RE more interested in villifying Black men than you are in actually having a discussion?

Shemika: Why don't you ask yourself that question considering you're the one eager to vilify- and disrespect bw? Unless you call degrading comments you and the other punks up in here make conversational. Maybe to you and the dumb broads like the ones you complain train you to hate bw, but not in my book. See, you claim to want bw to respect them-selves then you complain when they do because it means they don't tolerate disrespect from you clowns. It’s a vicious circle.

Shemika,

I have a Black spouse.

Do you?

I have Black children.

Do you?

I do NOT hate Black women. Not in the least bit. But that don't mean I think that any/everything a Black woman says and does is unimpeachable. My love for Black women does not mean that I think they're perfect.

And where's the VARIETY within your perspective and commentary?

It seems EVERYTHING you express here is about one thing and one thing ONLY: Demonizing Black men. Honestly, it seems you have NO other purpose for visiting this site. Most times I ignore your posts because of the utter REDUNDANCY of them.

Don't you have any OTHER points of interests of emphasis to discuss? Are there ANY issues or conditions within your worldview that a Black man has not somehow blighted or destroyed?

"Yeah, sure Ntfs, that's why a lot of Japs get their hair chemically processed to look just like nappy African hair."

Uhhhhhhh...sorry but that's not exactly true my dear. But I do distinctly recall seeing young Japanese guys with dread locks. I seen this a few times. I have no idea how they did it because their hair looked exactly like real dreads. Never seen a Japanese woman do however. But don't delude yourself into thinking they want to have natural nappy hair like blacks. It's just a fad to them. Something different -that's all! The Japanese are notorious for emulating everything! They copy and emulate just about every single thing in this country.

"What is it like over there in Japan?? How does it look??"

Well, as I said they have a fascination for Western culture. They emulate rappers, red necks, love Levi's, Jack Daniels is probably the national drink, they are probably the number one lovers of jazz, etc, etc. Funny story. One day I was on my way to Shubuya and I seen a Japanese kid with an Afro so big, when he turned side ways, you couldn't see his face! I was laughing so hard. But the guys who had the dreads, well, I have no idea how they did it. Their hair was exactly like natural nappy dreads. It was amazing! I never seen that before since their hair is naturally straight. I see plenty of whites with dreads often (men and women) but they look matted and no where near the texture of real dreads. But the Japanese have perfected a chemical treating of the hair that makes it exactly like the black peoples hair. Don't know how they do it, but it was unreal. They are the only non-blacks I have seen able to emulate dreads (which I happen to like).

"There are far MORE Black women trying to get their hair to look like that of Asian women than their are of Asian women trying to go nappy. Hell. At least HALF the Black chicks I see these's days have dead Korean hair in their heads."

Bro, you never said anything so truthful before! Practically every black women in this country would die to have the long silky thick hair of the Filipinas or Latinas. Not saying that is a good thing, but that is the truth. They won't admit it, but how do you explain the Whoppi Goldberg phenomena of replacing the towel on the head with pathetic fake down the back weaves and wigs that dominate the heads of black women across this country? How can someone honestly deny this?

Sad to say, the majority of black women I see every single day have a fake tired looking weaves in their hair or either a wig on. I talked to a friend of mine this morning who lives in Oakland. She told me the current craze up there is black women wearing phony Gypsy type down the back pony tails. She said it appears that every single black woman in her neighbor hood is sporting one. Her words -not mine!

I never seen that (Korean fake hair stores) when I lived in Japan or the Philippines. Why? They have natural genetics for long hair. There was no need to do that. I can just imagine what the Koreans think about black women at the end of a good wig and weave day. Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! One more time -NEVER, EVER SEEN A KOREAN WEAVE AND WIG SHOP WHILE I LIVE IN EITHER COUNTRY.

The Korean wig and weave stores could not exist nor survive if it were not for black women. There is one not far from where I live and I laugh every time I pass by at the hordes of black women frantically trying on wigs and buying hair extensions while the Koreans are scurrying around breaking out more and more fake hair to sell them. LMAO...!!!!!!!!!!!

Abm, you are so full of shyt, there is no point responding to your lying azz. Just remember the nikkas up in here are getting what they put out. Don't think I'll grin and bear the incessant bw bashing comments these fools make. Just because you clowns are accustomed to cooning for white folks approval doesn't give you the right to try to reduce bw to your own personal punching bags.

Abm, Oh gee, I'm crushed. NOT!
Freezing out bw that God forbid, expect the same level of respect you grant ww is what you nikkas do best.

Then you complain that bw teach their sons to hate bw yet show approval to both bm and bw who do the same here on this board. And chastise those who don't put up with it.

I guess as long as they bw allow you to disrespect them it's ok. Well, guess what, black boys mimic black men, fathers or not, ahead of their own mother.

Nolanfane,
Obviously you are not reading my posts in the context they are written. Nowhere do I state that I flat out hate bm. I respond to the hateful attitudes some of them express toward bw and I express hatred for their bigotry and bias against them. Funny how you don't make the same assessments against the bm on this board who are constantly calling bw names like ugly whores, gold diggers and bush monkey that I happen to be responding to. Is it because you feel bw should feel its okay for bm to disrespect bw and call them names as perhaps you do?

I love black women with all my heart. I would never have any woman but a black woman.

I'm just saying that some black women really are Ho's, golddiggers and bush monkeys just like some brothers really are busted too.

Everybody in here seems to be angry and at each other's throats. I only came here because I was looking for Kola Boof but I found the board interesting.

It's a damned shame to see brothers and sisters fighting like this. Hell, I'm bout to cry and want my mama up in here.

"I'm just saying that some black women really are Ho's, golddiggers and bush monkeys just like some brothers really are busted too."

I find it a little telling that you bother to repeat these hateful, biased, generalizations about bm, and referring to some bw a bush monkeys is really atrocious because for one, no bw is a monkey. And just referring to some brothers as busted hardly equalizes the expressions of disdain given bw. To label bw as gold diggers and whores alone implies such characteristics aren't applicable to non black women. But if someone refers to bm as whorish white worshipping, fake azz, gang banging ,thuggish apes I doubt you'd be so eager to endorse it. Otherwise you wouldn't be accusing me of being the hater opposed them.

No Shemika, a whole lot of brothers are whorish white worshipping fake azz gangbanging thuggish apes.

I admit that and I am ashamed of those brothers, but hell. It's like WW-3 up in here. Every thread I open up is a put down of black men with you sisters saying you don't want us and we aint shit. That's not fair!

I love black women. I would not place no other woman above the black woman. Ask my woman, ask my mother and my aunties. I know many brothers have lost they mind but don't put me in that category because I will stand against any black man who don't love black women on GP.

Black women are the backbone and the beauty of our race and that is what I teach my son.

Once again you delude yourself. Do you just love to hear yourself talk or do you think you could ever actually listen to what a bw has to say as well as honestly evaluate how bm are coming off. It appears everyone can recognize the contempt bm hold for bw except bm. You were just doing some hateful name calling to Igbogirl in another tread that was totally uncalled for. She was only responding to the biased labeling and name calling of bw by bm on this site and your response was irrational. Not unlike that of the other obstinate bm on here.

You also expressed approval and pleasure about shakesfears childish name calling rant against me on another board, but now you claim to be so distraught over such name calling. Excuse me if I question the level of your sincerity. You bm must keep in mind that the wounds of a friend are better than the kisses of an enemy. And any fool knows that by comparison bw is far more devoted and respectful of bm. But it has obviously gone to your heads causing you to expect us to sacrifice our own self respect in the face of your blatant displays of scorn and lack of similar support. In other words If you don't want to be bashed, stop bashing. Oh well, I'm sure it'll go right over your head just like me last post.

Nolanfane,
First of all Igbogirl has attempted to make peace with bm on this board, and they were the ones that begin making claims that all Africans had AIDS as if it doesn't occur anywhere else. So how do you expect her to respond? Have you not read the ongoing insults about Africans and bw by the nikka-Nazis on this board? Or is all you care about excusing bm and finding fault with black ones. Or just hating anyone from Africa? Believe me it’s all the same.

This is a typical response bw are responding to that you conveniently overlook:

Lil_ze: "its amazing that a filthy, ugly african, who comes from a place where AIDS, civil war, and starvation, actually thinks they can come to this country and teach black americans anything.

africa (with the exception of the "white" parts) is handsdown on the lowest level of civilazation on the planet earth. the africans are some of the ugliest, most disease ridden humans on the planet.

nobody wants UGLY women. the filthy african dog, knows just how ugly she really is every time she looks in the mirror. im sure that the disgusting, nasty black american female followers of this beast, are equally ugly.

the TRUE reason these black female posters on this board are so bitter, frustrated and angry, is because they know that men don't want UGLY females. this is why they are so concerned with "light skin".

This is just flat out ignorant racism that rivals that of the most insane Nazi. This fool is deserving of all the hell that is dripping from his lips.

Lil_ze is a piece of shit white boy and no I have not read everything on these boards, I just got here.

I have read much of Igbogirl's comments though and they are hateful and totally over the top. She basically has a personal problem and she's taking it out on any and every black man in sight.

I can respect and appreciate you Shemika, because I understand what you are saying overall, but I just don't like her and I never will.

I have a problem with Africans who come here and do exactly what Lil_ze is doing in reverse. She is no better than he is. They both need to get the fuck out of the black community.

”I admit that and I am ashamed of those brothers, but hell.

I agree. And you should be. I am. There are many things I see black men do that I detest and have no use for. I have stated this position enumerable times. But around here, for a few fanatics, it doesn’t matter. They hear only what they want to hear. Honesty means nothing to them.

”It's like WW-3 up in here. Every thread I open up is a put down of black men with you sisters saying you don't want us and we aint shit. That's not fair!”

Thank you and if you stick around, you will see that this profane and psychotic hate is emanating from just a few rejects. There are other black women who want no part of this orgy of broken record whining and race baiting.

”I love black women. I would not place no other woman above the black woman. Ask my woman, ask my mother and my aunties. I know many brothers have lost they mind but don't put me in that category because I will stand against any black man who don't love black women on GP.”

Doesn’t matter. You’re a black male and that alone qualifies you to be ridiculed and mocked. Don’t think by saying that you will be exempt from their scorn. You’re not!

”Black women are the backbone and the beauty of our race and that is what I teach my son.”

You’re a good man. Please continue to teach your son moral values and respect for women. Black women are the back bone of our race. But the noise you hear coming from this board is a small minority of pathetic black male haters. They are not black women –they are members of an Aryan Nation prison gang in cork black face, wearing skirts and wigs! E’nuff said……

You up here putting down the sisters but then you say nothing about that Aryan punk Lil_ze? What's up with that?

well like it or not im here. and im gonna be here. as long as these pathetic emotionally unstable black witches, continue to attempt to paint this false picture where the "black man" is the bad guy. i will respond accordingly.

as far as the african poster on this board. she should consider returning to africa. her "brothers" over there are probably feasting on a AIDS and dust sandwiches.
and lets be honest, MOST africans are ugly.

the ethiopians, somalians, eritreans, and people from djbouti have nice physical features, and many of them are quite attractive physically.

but the rest of the continental africans are very ugly and very primitive. the african is on the lowest level of civilazation on earth.
you might not want to hear this, but its true.

The only thing uncivilized is your backwards, foul sounding, uncivilized, disrespectful azzhole. You're nothing but some ugly azz bitter maggot bag quadroon. -Who has to bash Africans in a feeble attempt to feel good about your ghoulish self, you filthy parasite.

You wish you look half as good as an African; otherwise you wouldn't be so jealous, fugly punk. All the makeup, plastic surgery, and photo airbrushing in the world wouldn't help your hideous azz.
