I often hear (black) women complaining that all the girls in the hip-hop videos are light skinned or white. How come that's not what I am seeing? Yes there are a lot of light, mixed looking chicks, but there also plenty of brownskinned sisters who are my complexion.

Isn't Buffie the Body a video girl? She's fairly dark skinned. Also, even if it were true that the video girls were mainly light or white - would that really be such a problem? I mean the way they are portrayed is generally degrading and personally I'd like those women to look as little like me and the women in my family as possible!

I've also brought this point up here before.

Buffie is a print phenomenon. She has only appeared in 1 or 2 hip hop videos.

You do see a lot of Black women but its in the lowest budget rap videos.

Lots of black women in this video, which is far from low budget...

But yeah, even the supposedly pro black 5 Percent rappers mainly featured light skinned/mixed gulls in their videos...

"You do see a lot of Black women but its in the lowest budget rap videos."

This is simply not true. Nelly's videos are full of black women. So are Diddy's and most other high profile rappers. Busta Rhymes, for example, has some of the highest budget videos in the industry, and he uses black (as well as mixed) girls in his videos. I don't know why so many people have this idea that there aren't black women in the videos. Maybe they've never actually seen many hip hop videos.

Perhaps there are plenty Black girls in the videos BUT the women who are being especially FEATURED in them appear whiter/lighter-looking.

That MIGHT explain the perception differences that are being debated here and elsewhere.

I don't like Diddy's Dummy ass.

But, I love Busta Rhymes. Apart from his STAGE PERSONA, I actually believe he's quite respectful and intelligent, even more so than most rappers.

Well, I DO have to give Diddy one thing though....he can't be TOO stupid. If anything, he's a marketing genius.

It's got to take marketing brains to have absolutely NO TALENT and still get rich and famous.

But in everything else, he's just as dumb as any 15 year old.

And another thing I like about Busta...he acts crazy, but he's never disrespectful of others. He's a little hyperactive, but (as far as I know) he's not a bad role-model. All that AND he takes care of his children and INSISTS on doing so, even when his first child was born when he was 17 (or somewhere around that age).

And he's not some pretty boy bitch, like someone else I could name.

Exactly. That's what's going on.

Diddy's latest video featuring Nicole from the PussyCat Dolls does not feature any darkskin Black women AT ALL. Diddy has a lengthy track record dating back to '99 for primarily using mixed race women who lead roles in his videos.

Grind, that old Juvenile video "Back that Ass Up" is a low budget video.

Oh I should add: I worked on the shoot for a video of a song by Lenny Kravitz, P Diddy, Pharrell and a couple others. I forget the name of the song. I do remember that that fine ass Loon was also there and I think he spit a verse or two.

Anywhere, when I was there they were picking video ho's to appear in both the regular video and some kind of X rated version that was being put on DVD. They were over 100 hopeful girls there trying to be in the video. They already chosen a girl to be the main interest in the Pharrell part of the video. She was Asian and ultra ultra skinny. Pharrell looked very into her. Loads of stunning black women were running up to him but he looked contemptuous of them all. If I remember correctly he had a skateboard with him at the shoot. In the Diddy section, he was with some brownskinned chicks - he didn't insist on somebody non blac like Pharrell did. And Loon actually told me that he makes a POINT of having dark skinned girls as his love interest. HE said he wanted the girls in his videos to look like the girls he'd actually date (although admittedly people say he's gay). Anyway, the girls who were extras - dancing sexily by the car etc were mainly BROWNSKINNED. I'm talking girls the color of, say, Nia Long or my color. I had a couple words with the casting director and he said what he was looking for was the girls with the most bangin' bodies, period. There was one brownskinned girl with a body not unlike Buffie's but it wasn't actually Buffie and she was getting LOADS of attention from everyone. The girl Lenny chose for his part was about the complexion of Sanaa Lathan. There were at least as many brownskinned girls as lightskinned, possibly more were brownskinned actually. I'll admit that I did not see even one girl there who was REALLY dark, like, say Alek Wek. But there were loads of what I call "medium-toned" girls a la Nia Long and Sanaa LAthan. I can honestly say that plenty of girls were cast in that family who looked every bit as black as me and my family.

Also, sadly, some of these girls imagined that being in this video was going to result in some kind of movie career.

Also there was a very young, clueless girl who had to get her tits out for an extra $150 to be in the X-rated version. She was sort of sitting at LEnny's feet with her titties out and she was young enough to be his daughter. She was also brownskinned by the way.
