Like Kola, both my parents are African. In fact they are both West Afican. I was raised in Europe. Since moving to the US five years ago, African-American have told me that I don't look African and that I look like an African-American. But what exactly do they mean by that? One person commented that I am "skinny" and have "no ass at all" for an African woman. In fact, I have a similar body type to the other women in my family and many of the women in my mother's tribe (Igbo) - tall, very long legs, narrow hips, lean but quite muscular. I don't understand this perception of African women having huge hips and being very large. Where I am from the women tend to be very lean. Its only when they get much older and have had several children and have grown wealthy enough not to have to do much for themselves, that some of them get large. The other weird comments I've gotten is that I am "not dark enough" to be pure African. One African American man actually argued with me that it was impossible for me be 100% black African (which I believe myself to be)and not be darker. Is there also a perception that all Africans must be as deeply complected as Alek Wek. Here is my pic by the way.   | ||

You, IMO, look like a typical African AND African-American. You will find that a lot of African American people try so hard to claim white blood and DISTANCE themselves from being African, that they delude themselves by saying that because they don't look like Alek Wek they have to have white blood and therefore aren't really African. To look at someone like yourself who looks like them and is African and doesn't have white blood SCARES them because they realize that they're actually closer to Africa than they wish to be. There are AA's who are MUCH darker than you are who will say they have white blood and therefore aren't African, but "multi-racial". You blow up all of their lies for them. Thanks. | ||

Another thing, I find the "big hips/large build" thing to actually be more common in America and not at all common in African women (that I've met anyways). You guys for the most part seem to me to be quite thin and often petite. Gambian women, for instance, (that I've personally met) seem hardly able to fill out their own clothes. American people see the world through their own eyes....so, if we're fat, we expect everyone else to be also. | ||

Renata, thanks. That explains a lot of the reactions I get. You say that I look like a typical African AND African-American and I agree with you. However, I have some African friends who somehow manage to look African but NOT African-American. What I mean is, nobody would ever say to them "you don't look African" and you can somehow tell they are African just by looking. In my own experience, I've been to West Africa, South Africa, Jamaica, and of course all over America and in each of those places, everyone takes me for a local/native! | ||

Because you are African, your writings should present an interesting input and perspective many black Americans may not be aware of. Secondly, you must understand that many black Americans have very distorted and unrealistic beliefs about what Africans look like (like everyone else). They believe having a large butt and wide hips is somehow imbedded in black DNA. They have deluded themselves into thinking that if a black woman is not packing a rear end as wide as the back end of a F-150 truck, the woman is somehow lagging in her black genes. What they do not realize, especially those born after 1970, that this epidemic of massive butts and obesity was not characteristic of black women as a “group” 40 to 50 years ago. Ask anyone over the age of 50 if black women, as a group, were as large today as when they were young. THE ANSWER WILL BE A RESOUNDING NO! According to the American Obesity Association, U.S. adults, black (non-Hispanic) women have the highest prevalence of overweight (78 percent) and obesity (50.8 percent). These statistics did not reflect the physical demographics of black women in 1960. However, since it is trendy and fashionable for black American women to brag and flaunt having a big butt, any woman who does not sport a double basket ball booty is looked upon as lagging (especially if she happens to be black). Comments from black Americans about you “not being dark enough” are clear examples of their misguided perceptions. They do not understand nor realize that there are varying hues of color among Africans. For some strange reason (probably from media brain washing), they believe all Africans, regardless of their geographical or tribal origins, are all uniformly very dark complexioned. This is simply not true. And since you do not have a large protuberant butt and big thighs, that further contradicts their erroneous beliefs. Their ignorance has nothing to do with you or the physical reality of African people. It’s the embarrassing wide spread degree of black American ignorance, coupled with their pathological obsession with skin color (which saturates this board –trust me, you’ll notice it very shortly), that drives them to make such distorted and reality free comments. | ||

If people actually spent time in various African countries, they would see the reality. My mother's 5'11 with the longest, skinniest legs you ever saw and she wore a size 4-6 even after giving birth to four children. Her hips are tiny. And she is very typical of women from her region of West Africa. But here's an interesting point. Some of my family members who were born and raised in America are now overweight and have HUGE butts, thighs and hips. Maybe it's something to do with the growth hormone they put into the meat here. | ||

What I mean is that the shape is pronounced and the butt might stick out a bit. But I don't agree that the overall size is big. My 17 year old niece is tall and skinny. Her butt has a pronounced shape, but since she fits into a size 2, at the height of 5'9, her butt is not actually at all large. If that makes sense. I am quite similar. I'm 5'9 and my behind is very "high" and as round as a football, LOL. However, it can still fit into size 4-6 pants, so it can't be all that big. | ||

I've noticed that women from Sierra Leone tend to have enormous buttocks. It must have something to do with diet. Arab women, especially North Africans, tend to be heavier hipped and bigger legged than women from Sub-Saharan Africa. | ||

Hi Igbo Girl, It's so nice to have yet another African woman in the mix, and I realize you've been raised in Europe, HOWEVER... you need to learn the History of your tribe, the Igbo...my close friends, the scholar Chinweizu and the poet Tolulope Ogunlesi are both Igbo....and though you naturally would see yourself as just "black"----the Igbo are both BLACK and Nigeria's most "mixed" blooded tribe at the same time. Just like the Black Americans---you have 2 black Igbo parents and assume that there is no mixture in your blood. But in the 1500's, the Portugese and Arab explorers were the first to begin mixing with Igbo Princesses. In the 1600's to the 1850's, the British, Dutch and other European WHITE colonists, explorers, missionaries, etc. continued to prefer Igbo women for "maids", " It's commonly known that the Igbo's are Nigeria's "lighter-skinned" group..."hickory brown" in comparison to the darker Yoruba, Ekoi, Hausa and other tribes. I am not in any way questioning whether you are BLACK or not----of course, by African standards----you are both BLACK and AFRICAN. But there is much WHITE blood in the Igbo tribe, and ESPECIALLY in the blood of those who could afford to leave and live in Europe. I'm not a racist, but I have personally noticed certain (although un-scientific) trends. Since I am originally from the Mid-West, there may be some truth to that (I noticed the flat butt thing when I was in Chicago and Ohio two years ago). But I do know for a fact, that in Southern California, that is NOT THE CASE. I recall about twenty years ago, a dear friend of mine (who is deceased now) said to me one day, "Listen, white women in California are different -these women don't have flat asses. There is nothing flat about their asses". And she was a black woman. Up to that point, I had never really noticed. But after that conversation, I began noticing. IT'S TRUE. Hi Kola, actually I am half Igbo and the other half is Sierre Leonian from the Mende tribe. Although I was raised in Europe, I've spent a lot of time in Africa and other parts of Africa. While there are lot of Igbo who are a bit lighter than other Nigerians, not all of them are light. Think about Oluchi. She's Igbo. I also have a half sister who is 100% Igbo and she has the complexion of Wesley Snipes. As for only the more mixed Igbos having the means to travel to Europe back in the day: I'm not so sure about that. The wealth in my mother's family began with her grandfather who was a jet black man. I suppose its possible he had Portugese or other white ancestry but it sure did not show in his appearance. I think Igbo women are very pretty. However, it is rather sad that right now women of my complexion and lighter are favoured over the darker Igbo women. And there is LOTS of skin bleaching going on. Even two of my aunts have bleached their skin to the point where they have gone from Oluchi's color to about six shades lighter. | ||

Igbogirl do Igbos generally know/acknowledge their racial admixture? I have known several who don't seem to know why their skin is yellowish and their eyes are light colored whereas my father was the one who told me of Igbo blood lines (we are from Benin). I think it's important that people understand that African does not equal pure black if African is defined strictly as someone born on the continent. There are populations on both coast with heavy mixing. If Americans say you are not dark enough they generally just don't know much about the history of individual populations and families. | ||
