Excerpt from 'Book about black leaders goes too far' by Eugene Kane:
"...my immediate reaction to 'Enough' was to the personal tone of the criticism of famous black figures such as Jackson, Sharpton and Farrakhan. Williams suggests black Americans with an affinity for these black leaders have been somehow misled.
That's a bit of a stretch.
Jackson might not be as relevant as he once was, but there's little doubt if you're fighting for a civil rights cause or have a loved one captured by a foreign nation, he just might be your hole card. As for Sharpton, Williams accused him of various malfeasances in 'Enough' in regard to his personal history, but the former presidential candidate is still a pretty good person to seek out if someone you know has been wrongfully shot to death by police.
Farrakhan, of course, is the man who pulled off the Million Man March twice....
I wanted to find out if 'Enough' has made much of a wave in the local black book-reading community. My best barometer as always is Carla Allison, owner of Reader's Choice, a black-owned bookstore on N. King Drive.
Allison said the buzz on 'Enough' was nothing like the response to 'The Covenant With Black America,' a self-help book on black empowerment edited by TV and radio personality Tavis Smiley that struck a chord with black readers nationally....
For her [own] taste, Allison said, she preferred books that dealt 'with issues more as opposed to personalities. I like books that have new ideas, not the same old thing.'"
