I just returned from a screening of Idlewild, and I have to tell you, I'm pissed! The movie was pretty good, and I hope you all see it. I can't wait to hear everyone's opinion. I'll share more of my opinion after the movie opens.

First of all, why do people bring 6 year old kids to rated-R movies? It really bothered me when there was a graphic oral scene and all I could do was think about the little kids. And then, people laughed at the most inappropriate times! Somebody dies and people laugh? There were cell phones ringing, people talking all through the film. Dang it!

Anyway, please see the film. I give it a B+. We need to support this film!!!!

In a recent workshop with sci-fi writer Steven Barnes, we talked about how moviegoing audiences are uncomfortable with love scenes involving white males. I don't think we've talked about black folks being uncomfortable with black love on the screen too, but I'm beginning to think they are too! What do you think?

during the graphic oral sex scene, all you could do was think about the kids? sex is a part of life (that includes oral sex). the reason that all you could think about was "the kids". is because society attempts to portray children as some type of "pure" beings that should not know about, hear about, or think about anything sexual. this is insane. children are sexual beings. children have sexual feelings. if society was not so "concerned" about protecting the children from sex. there would be no problem. im not saying children should be "fed" a diet of sex. but this idea that children should not know about sex is just crazy. what is society trying to protect children from? is sex bad? is sexual contact bad? there is a book titled "harmful to minors". the authors last name is levine. she documents our very irrational way of dealing with children and sex. if some parents want to take their children to movies like idlewild, so be it. the "boogeyman" of our age is the concept of children and sex. children are not some kind of angels. they are just younger.

Lil_ze,

I'm sorry, but I just believe that six year old kids should not be exposed to graphic sex scenes in movies. Show 'em that stuff at home, if that's want you want for them. I don't think that children are pure, but unless you have a framework for exposing children to sex, then you'll have the same problems we're dealing with today - teen pregnancy, STDs, etc. etc.

Oh, in the original post, I meant that we "we talked about how moviegoing audiences are uncomfortable with love scenes involving BLACK males," not white ones.

i understand your point. and i respect your opinion.
the industry in general is uncomfortable with seeing black people in love scenes. this is why an accomplished "a-list" actor like denzel washington, has yet to star in a mainstream love story. yet every year there are 50 love stories starring white actors. denzel has commented about this.
as far as supporting the movie "idlewild", i don't know. even if the cast and director are black, im not sure that black people will benifit from this film being a hit. when the movie studio realeasing the film is black owned, then maybe i'll get excited about such a movie. but to be honest, the film just seems like more "black gangster" stuff. but i will see the film eventually to be sure. im a big film fan, but i won't go see a movie, just because there are black actors in the lead roles or if the directors black. the movie "waist deep" was directed by, and starring black people. it was a piece of garbage. id rather watch "a soldier's story" starring adolf ceaser, howard rollins, and denzel washington, for the 80th time, rather than support an "allegedlly" black film, that feeds in to this "black gangster" hype.

I get your points too, Lil_ze. Maybe I should have framed the question - Why do people bring 6-year old children to movies? The way its stated as is, pre-supposes that I want to impose my beliefs on others, which is definitely not the case. There may be parents out there that are open with their children about sex and have no problem taking their children to see movies such as "Idlewild." What can I say to that? My beliefs, such as they are, are my own.

I agree with you 100% about the industry and black people in love scenes. I just didn't realize until recently that black people may also have a problem with black people in love scenes. That's really unfortunate.

They bring them damn kids to the movies because they are too broke, lazy or trifling to get a babysitter. It is why I do not go to movies in black areas anymore.

Dakota,

Hahahaha!!!

Based on what you'd written adjacent to it, I thought you meant Black men. But why not have fun?

But to your point: I suspect the ONLY foks who really have a problem with Black men making out on film are White men. Only problem with THAT is THEY'RE the ones who mostly own, produce, direct and distribute movies.

*shrugs*

Well, I suggest you be more selective about where you go to view movies. Considering the demographics of the movie goers and the area can save you a lot of grief. Been there and done that. No movies in da hood for me. I've been to movies when I was younger where Negroes were smoking dope, drinking alcohol, talking incessantly and hollering at the screen during the movie, adding their own audio special effects, empty liquor bottles clanking in the isles, high fiving each other and ranting at certain scenes and I've even seen a few fights. I suggest if you want to sit and watch the movie in a quiet and undisturbed atmosphere, check for other areas where you can avoid da hood factor. Because if you go to those particular theaters, you should not be surprised at this behavior.

"They bring them damn kids to the movies because they are too broke, lazy or trifling to get a babysitter. It is why I do not go to movies in black areas anymore."

Yep! For the most part, this is true.

"during the graphic oral sex scene, all you could do was think about the kids? sex is a part of life (that includes oral sex). the reason that all you could think about was "the kids". is because society attempts to portray children as some type of "pure" beings that should not.......... children have sexual feelings. if society was not so "concerned" about protecting the children from sex. there would be no problem. im not saying children should be "fed" a diet of sex. but this idea that children should not........... there is a book titled "harmful to minors". the authors last name is levine. she documents our very irrational way.....................children are not some kind of angels. they are just younger."

I agree to some degree with your premise -but not completely. I do agree that there is a somewhat over zealous and irrational over reaction to children being exposed to sexual matters. But I don't think that it is appropriate for children 6 years of age being taken to sexually and violently graphic movies. I see no point in that. And I don't think any of us would have a video family night with popcorn and pizza watching Remington Steele (14 inch male porn star) anally impale Belladonna (super female porn star) with our children. I personally have no problems with such movies but I don't think it is a good idea for children to see this particular type of material at such a young age. But I don't believe in the Draconian censorship and religiously driven effort to eliminate anything relating to nudity or sex by hard line conservative Republicans or the American Family Association. The fierce attacks of pornography and sexually explicit material is driven by the ruse of protecting children.

If you’ve noticed, fierce criticisms of pornography usually come from two directions: conservative and religious forces, and feminism. Religious conservatives like Jerry Falwell, decry pornography because they see it as immoral; sex is reserved for married couples, and pornography is believed to lead to an overall increase in what they consider to be immoral and degenerate behavior in society.

In 1968, the Supreme Court decision held that people could view whatever they wished in the privacy of their own homes caused and uproar. Congress provided funds and Lyndon B. Johnson appointed a commission to study pornography. The commission's report recommended sex education, funding of research into the effects of pornography, restriction of children's access to pornography, and recommended limiting restrictions for adults to access pornography. As you probably expected, the report was widely criticized and rejected by Congress. No surprise there.

In 1983, prosecutors in California tried to use pandering and prostitution state statutes against a producer of and actors in a pornographic movie. The California Supreme Court ruled in 1988 that these statutes do not apply to the production of pornography. As expected, this sent conservatives, religious zealots and advocates of sex censorship into a tailspin. To this very day, more than likely because of that decision, California is now the capital of the US porn industry.

And I do know about the Judith Levine book. She stated: '"Evidence of the harm of exposure to sexually explicit images or words in childhood is inconclusive, even nonexistent.". To drive her point home, she referred to the 1970 U.S. Commission on Obscenity and Pornography which according to their research, the Lockhart commission, uncovered no link between adult exposure to pornography and bad behavior. Needless to say, again, this did not go over very well with those who want to restrict our access to adult material.

I personally recall in 1985 when Ronald Reagan appointed another commission to study pornography issues. It specifically wanted to overturn the findings of the Lockhart commission (1970). I'm sure a number of you may remember the Attorney General at that time; Edwin Meese (what a slug!). His commission's report, released in 1986, attempted to claim that pornography is harmful and can lead to violent acts. Well, his report was widely criticized for allegedly producing findings that were politically expedient and "morally correct" rather than reflecting sound empirical evidence. Later, some of the scientists who gathered evidence for his politically motivated report, reported a conclusion that was totally different from the conclusion of the commission. I remember that farce Meese attempted to erect very well.

”Oh, in the original post, I meant that we "we talked about how moviegoing audiences are uncomfortable with love scenes involving BLACK males," not white ones.”

This is very true. I have noticed it myself. Just about all the white male movie stars indulge in romantic and sexual exploits in their movies. They all have soul mates with scenes of intimacy. Johnny Depp, Clint Eastwood, the Baldwin brothers, Michael Douglass, Keanu Reeves, Ben Affleck, Bruce Willis, Russell Crowe, Hugh Grant or Harrison Ford, all have romantic trysts and interests. When was the last time you saw a steamy love scene with Denzel Washington? DelRoy Lindo? Samuel Jackson? When have you ever seen one of the greatest actors ever, Morgan Freeman even kiss a woman?? Moreover, not only do you rarely see Black men in bed with women, YOU BARELY EVER SEE A MAJOR BLACK MALE STAR MAKING LOVE AT ALL! How many times have you seen Wesley Snipes have sex in his "Blade" trilogy? Did you notice how Will Smith did not have a love interest in the movie "I Robot”? Could you imagine that happening to ANY white male super star? I don’t think so. Bottom line is this: The American public is not interested in seeing black men with intense love making or romantic scenes.

”but i won't go see a movie, just because there are black actors in the lead roles or if the directors black. the movie "waist deep" was directed by, and starring black people. it was a piece of garbage. id rather watch "a soldier's story" starring adolf ceaser, howard rollins, and denzel washington, for the 80th time, rather than support an "allegedlly" black film, that feeds in to this "black gangster" hype.”

I agree. I’m not into spending my money financing and perpetuating these pathetic thuggish black movies that only serve to mislead and corrupt young black men. Sorry.

”How LONG has the public been bother with White guys making out on celluiod? Because it seems to me if what you cite is true, moviegoers should have been pretty dayam pissed off since the INVENTION of motion pictures.”

But they are not. That is why they have ratcheted up the sex in movies. The public seems to have an insatiable appetite for these sex scenes –as long as they are not black guys or women.

”I wonder if foks who have the kinds of troublesome moviegoing experiences that you describe demanded REFUNDS would theaters better curb some of that stuff.”

Can’t argue with that. That would send a very clear message to the producers and financers of these types of movies.

Alright...alright...maybe I did get a little carried away. I'll admit it. I had some free time and I just went for it. I know, it is a bad habit. Brevity is something I'm struggling with. Wish me luck....
