Frozen sperm could be used to
revive extinct species

By Randolph E. Schmid
Associated Press

WASHINGTON - Descendants of extinct mammals such as the giant woolly mammoth might one day walk the Earth again.

It isn't exactly Jurassic Park, but Japanese researchers are looking at the possibility of using sperm from frozen animals to inseminate living relatives.

So far they've succeeded with mice - some frozen as long as 15 years - and lead researcher Dr. Atsuo Ogura says he would like to try experiments in larger animals.

"In this study, the rates of success with sperm from 15 year-frozen bodies were much higher than we expected. So the likelihood of mammoths revival would be higher than we expected before," Ogura said in via e-mail.

While frozen sperm is commonly used by sperm banks, the team led by Ogura, at Riken Bioresource Center in Ibaraki, Japan, worked with sperm from whole frozen mice and from frozen mouse organs.

"If spermatozoa of extinct mammalian species can be retrieved from animal bodies that were kept frozen for millions of years in permafrost, live animals might be restored by injecting them into (eggs) from females of closely related species," the researchers said in a paper appearing in today's issue of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Intact mammoth bodies have been excavated from Siberian permafrost.

Elephants would be a potential candidate for insemination with frozen mammoth sperm, Ogura said. He also suggested experiments might be tried with extinct feline species and their modern relatives.

Dr. Robert McGaughey, laboratory director at the Institute for Reproductive Studies in Scottsdale, Ariz., said that since some of the whole frozen mice had been held for 15 years before obtaining the sperm nuclei "it clearly is possible that some day we may be able to obtain offspring from extinct animals frozen at reasonable temperatures for very long periods of time."

Less enthusiastic was Dr. Peter Mazur, a biologist at the University of Tennessee who has worked with frozen eggs and sperm and is a past president of the Society for Cryobiology.

Mazur thinks the chance that frozen sperm from mammoths could be used to fertilize a related species is near zero.

"The storage temperature of frozen mammoths is not nearly low enough to prevent the chemical degradation of their DNA over hundreds of thousands of years," he said.

Wow! Now that thought certainly took a lot of research, considerable thinking and intelligence to make. Whew! I have to admit –it’s too abstract and difficult for me to comprehend. I guess I’ll just stick with nuclear physics.

"Ntfs why don't you go back to a thread that you seem to be an expert on like the one praising and honoring light-skinned ppl."

Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! You're funny. Sorry about that young man, but you are sadly mistaken. I profess no expertise on light complexioned people. Nor do I seek any. They are black people just like everyone else who frequents this forum. Unlike you, I don’t separate one group of blacks from another for such superficial and meaningless categorizations. That’s your job. You seem to enjoy pitting blacks against one another because of something they have no control over. Let me make a suggestion, if you want to impress the readers of this board as a heavy hitter on subjects of black interest, stay away from tired rants about skin color and focus on compelling literary subjects, current events, the stake black people have in the upcoming November elections, the impact the deluge of negative imagery is having on young blacks, why New Orleans is still a quagmire, what are the real causes of a horrendous 70% illegitimacy black birth rate, what you think of Juan Williams latest work, “Enough” or Taylor Branches most recent tome “At Canaan's Edge: America in the King Years, 1965-68”, or is there any real solutions to stem the rate of incarceration of young black men, etc, etc, etc…..

Instead, you gleefully and proudly post silly questions about whether white people stink, …..if black men date white women do they hate themselves, …..are light complexioned people bad, …..I hate white people, …..why are there more light complexioned women in rap videos than dark complexioned women, …..why celebrity white Latinas don’t pick black men like black men pick them, etc, etc…. Duhhhhhhh…??????

I don’t see, just as you have never explained nor clarified, why you and your supportive cabal of race baiters obsess and foam at the mouth over black people who have lighter skin that you do! Your ongoing mantra about light vs. dark borders on pathological! What is that you hope to gain, establish or achieve with such caustic and divisive ranting? And what is the real reason you are helpless and unable to jump off this tread mill skin color demagoguery????

Renata your comment had me laughing out loud!

Serenasailor comment was a silly, albeit slightly funny (in a Dave Chappell sort of way) response. Ntfs_encryption comeback was better but your last comment put the icing in the cake.

Howabout those wolly mamomths...
