MTV Slammed For Racial Insensitivity
By: Coryn Brown of Vibe Magazine
August 9, 2006

Left hooks are being swung at MTV over a recent animation depicting Snoop Dogg with two black women leashed on all fours and defecating on themselves in the cartoon series, Where My Dogs At?

The half-hour program, which airs on Saturdays at 12:30 pm, drew stimulus from a 2003 MTV Video Music Award appearance by the west coast rapper donning the red carpet with two black women tethered to animal restraints.

Recently, critics chided the music station for airing the episode, “Woofie Loves Snoop,” in a network time slot frequented by younger children. Yet prominent black voices like New York Daily News columnist Stanley Crouch are labeling the animated lampoon as a racial and misogynistic play on dehumanization.

In a column published this week, Crouch fired at the MTV airing, calling it an extension of sexist images portrayed in gangsta rap videos, promoted by the music network and broadcasted “around the world as 'real' black culture.”

The series, which recently completed an eight-episode trial run on the network's sister channel MTV2, animates celebrity and pop culture from the perspective of two stray dogs, Woofie and Buddy, voiced by Tracy Morgan and Jeffrey Ross, respectively.

In the episode, two bikinied women on leashes are walked uprightly into a pet shop before bowing into the dog's position and scratching themselves. The segment ends with a member of Snoop's entourage picking up excrements left by one of the women with a rubber glove.

In response to the public rebuke, MTV's president, Christina Norman - who is black - issued a statement this week defending the episode, which originally aired on July 1st.

"We certainly do not condone Snoop's actions and the goal was to take aim at that incident for its insensitivity and outrageousness," Norman said.

Satina,

Look. If we're gonna let Snoop Dawg and those fool chicks strut up on stage the way he did on the 2003 VMA's, how the hell we gone trip on MTV when they use the very imagery that BLACK foks initiated to begin with?

Had we BLASTED Snoop's a$$ for that 3 years ago, no way in HELL MTV would have had the stones to air some shyt like that.

But I our mostly giggling at what Snoop did gave tacit approval to the producer of "Where My Dogs At?".

This is my FAVORITE part of what you posted: "In response to the public rebuke, MTV's president, Christina Norman - who is black - issued a statement this week defending the episode, which originally aired on July 1st..."We certainly do not condone Snoop's actions and the goal was to take aim at that incident for its insensitivity and outrageousness," Norman said."

So here you have a BLACK woman who hilariously asserts that she intends to "take aim" at the degradation of BLACK women by SHOWING the degradation of Black women.

Is there ANY wonder left of why we're in the fix we're in?

I agree ABM this is just ridiculous. So, someone walks down the red carpet with women on each side wearing dog chains around their necks, NOW everyone’s up in arms because MTV depicted the same thing in a cartoon caricature??? STOP THE MADNESS!! Seriously! Like you said, where was the same enthusiasm when the artist committed the act? It could be said this a prime example of playing the race cards. Same thing with the N word. Oh, we can say it, but you can’t b.s.

How can one freely put misogynistic images out there for their own financial gain, exposure, vanity, promotion... then get offended when someone exploits them? Our hip hop elite has got to be more responsibe. It's just terrible how they depict us. And yeah, the women were idiots for stupidly going along with it.

Satina,

Theres little such thing as a "hip hop elite". At least from the perspective of socio-political accountability and responsibility.

They mostly died out when Dr. Dre dropped The Chronic nearly 15 years ago. Then, brothas figured out they could make almost as much dough in music as the White performers and have been mostly selling-out to that end ever since.

And I really don't know what to say about women. Because one part of me has bought into the the equal rights, liberate women arguments.

And part of me think most of you need to swallow your pride, find yourself a good Black man and bust your a$$ helping to help make him into a GREAT man.

MTV is garbage, but people line up to watch it.

Don't watch the garbage and tell them why--

But I ain't holding my breath.

The whole thing is disgusting, but this is Snoop and MTV we're talking about --both are filthy! What can one expect?! I just feel sorry for the young, unsupervised minds that have to, somehow, process such unhealthy images!

Oh, please ABM.

I did that---not that I regret it---and he left me for a younger woman. LOL :-)

But he's still a GREAT MAN, he gave me beautiful sons I adore and he made sure that I experienced what it's like to be put on a pedestal.

OK.

Maybe if these other women had my LUCK---because I honestly, as I state in my autobiography's "God Is A Black Man" chapter (prompting ABM to read it) have had great LUCK with black men---but not other kinds.

Kola,

Uhhh...I said "part of me" feels that way.

It depends on the women, I guess.

If you're going to go into the world and grapple for your fairshare of it, I say GO FOR IT, Baby. Don't let NOBODY try to stop you.

But if a highwater mark of your life is going to include your allowing some fool nikka tote you around in PUBLIC with a dog chain and choker, well then, yeah, maybe you need to try to find yourself a good man and do what he tell your a$$ to do.

Which story is the truth, Kola?

If I recall correctly, Kola problem with Thomas was his marrying her was conditional upon her surrendering her very PUBLIC and contentious literary and social advocacy activites, which she refused to do.

I don't watch much MTV or VH1 (except for Pimp My Ride). But I heard about a FLAV episode where some chick defecated on the floor. I supposed that's the new shock TV, people taking shits on camera. I guess public executions aren't too far behind.

Exactly --it was about her "life's work"--and had nothing to do with him "leaving" her for a younger woman.

Let's "hear" what Kola has to say, though.

Moonsigns, I have ALWAYS stated that Thomas was "sexist"---but that I love him in spite of it. And I do.

In fact, I would even venture (as I'm sure I have before) to say that I prefer a slightly sexist mate. In many ways, I am still African. Our home is a very TRADITIONAL one---where I did the cooking and cleaning, and was always happy to SERVE Thomas his meals as I witnessed BOTH my African mother and AA mother do when I was a kid.

You also left out the fact that in order for us to get married---I would have to move to BELIZE and give up being "Kola Boof", as he likes "Naima".

I couldn't do that. So we lived together for 10 years and had two sons. I still feel as though we were MARRIED. I really do.

The thing is...I can't just be "Naima". There is too much that GOD intended for me to do publicly with my life.

Moonsigns, YES I HAVE (!) mentioned several times on this board----ask CYNIQUE---that Thomas is dating a much younger woman.

We didn't break up over my career--we simply didn't get married because of my refusal to go to Belize. (*See my autobiography for fully detailed story.)

And I am dating Jamal Lewis, so what's there to gloss over?

I simply don't have Jamal's permission to write anything on this board about our relationship--and I'm having too much fun to even notice Mzuri's jealous scorn.

Let her talk to herself or whoever'll listen.

Kola - You don't have Jamal's permission to write anything on this board about your relationship??? What BS. If that was the case then why have you done so? And what's up with the jealous scorn accusations. Is that your only defense when someone outs you for being a phoney fraudulent lying wench? That they did so because they are jealous - of YOU? For what? You can't name one reason why anyone would be jealous of you. Hate you maybe, jealous - NO!

You're truly one sad broken record. A one-trick pony. And no one here but your Kola-Klones is buying your incessant lies. You would have done better to claim that you posted the pic by mistake than to attempt to turn your juvenile charade into another one of your full blown koladramas. You look stupid - straight up retarded.

Sadly, nobody's going to stop watching MTV or VH1. Their core audience consists of white people, and whitey doesn't care when Blacks are portrayed as sub-human animals.

Mzuri- Very true, maybe we could take a more proactive approach. Leaders in the African AMerican communities could launch boycotts against the channel and send letters to the executives as a first step. With enough exposure, they may be able to get entertainment personalities to withhold support and "go on strike" from doing their shows. White folks may love MTV, but mainstream Hip Hop is a multi-million dollar industry with A LOT of their money involved.

Mr. Bigshot might throw a shit fit if Method Man refuses to do a live appearance due to MTV's discretion.

But there is the other side of the coin. We have remained pretty silent about the issue of degradation for awhile. Proponents WILL bring that up. It'd be who of us to stand and admit that we let it get out of control, but that it has to stop.

Maybe if all the video models went on strike, that would get some attention too.

Now we know why the uglyfication of black women on reality shows is "hot" right now $$

By: Shayla Byrd

August 10, 2006

If the ratings numbers for the debut of Flavor of Love 2 are an indicator, people love them some Flavor Flav.

The second season’s debut episode drew 3.3 million viewers, according to Nielsen Media Research,—the largest premier audience in the history of VH1. The Sunday launch beat out every other show on cable in the same 10 p.m. time slot, including a new episode of HBO’s Entourage (2.4 million).

Those who tuned in got an eye full. Two contestants on the show got the catfighting started early this year, prompting Flav to yell, “Yo! This ain’t The Flavor Springer Show!,” while another young lady literally pooped on the floor.

But this isn’t the first time Flavor Flav’s show has gone down in VH1 record books. Six million people watched last season’s finale, making it the top-rated telecast in VH1 history.

Semperfemme - Real boycotts happen when people stop buying the companies products that are advertised on a particular network. No sales = no advertising revenue = programming change. And unfortunately, Black people won't band together and stop buying the garbage that's advertised and pushed upon us. Plus, again - the MTV/VH1 audience is mostly white people anyway and so nothing's going to change.

Mzuri,

Eventhough MTV/VH1's audiences are vastly Caucasian, their management would be a lot LESS inclined to air such programming if enuff Black foks openly and vociferously resented and rejected it.

Moreover, much of young White kids consider to be 'kewl' these days are what BLACK kids consider 'kewl'. If we weren't enjoying Snoop and Flava Flav cooning, fewer of them would as well.

Agree ABM. Hey, here's a thought: An African American producer/record exec should create a new sound for the suburban kids (Black, WHite and other) to get with. Isn't that what some brother did with one of those boy bands several years ago? Get the pre-teen girls on board. Then begin another sound for the older girls and boys...a better, 21st century punk or grunge or something...

Flavor of Love is a reality show filled with bottom of the barrel aspiring actresses, singers, models who didn't stand a chance making a legitimate career so their agencies put them on reality shows as a last resort for some kind of exposure. Everything is staged.

The Black women are told to do the most animalistic acts--one being a lady squatted and took a shit on the living room floor, then ran to the balcony stairs and took another shit. Whether this is real or not (I doubt it was real) its still terribly dumb to "pretend" as if you really defecated on the floor of someones home.

Even the commercials running around the programming of Flavor of Love are racially insensitive--there's one where a gay white guy makes a quip about how "kinky" Black women's hair is..

Tomorrow, one of the White women states that she wants "dark babies", by Flavor Flav.

What is stopping so many young Black males from being pimped in the sports industry? Because they feel they have only one talent (e.g., ball-playing) or attribute (e.g., good looks) that they can capitalize on? And even if the odds are against them making it to the top, elite big time they figure someone's gotta make it and it may as well be them?

Because they want attention, to be ghetto-fab, get their 15 minutes of fame? Because it's fun? Because they figure, hell, you're only young/on this earth for a short time so why not make the most of it? Because in their definitional system they do not categorize this as "degredation"? Because they don't give an eff what folks like us think of them? Because their other realistic options did not involve business or medical school? Because somebody's gonna look/pay/cheer, so why not be them being looked at/paid/cheered?...
