I like them both. Granted they both have no talent. But I like there style. I like Ciara alot better. But Rihanna is cool too. What do you think?

Neither.

I'm so sick of the same *safe* looking Black girls in pop culture.

Rihanna is seriously all kinds of fug with her huge forehead and her hairline that starts all the way back to her ears.

A safe looking Black woman is one that posses keen Euro features that are non threatening to the broad White American audience. A Black woman who doesn't look too Black

See Rihanna

She is the Beyonce-lite. Lesser talented but posesses the similar features--light light carmel brown skin, light green eyes, and the long blonde weave.

keen european features? what does that mean? rihanna and beyonce are black women. some of our people (women like beyonce and rihanna) have the features they have because thats how some of our people look. do you mean to say that rihanna or beyonce are not black? or that they are somehow "less" black? i also don't really understand what you mean by "less threatening to the broad white american audience? how did whitney houston become such a big star? did whitney houston have keen european features? so i don't get your point? if america was threatened by some one who is too black how did whitney become such a huge star? unless you are saying that whitney houston is not too black also? please explain.

Lil_ze,

Ironically, when Whitney (and Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, Gladys Knight and Dionne Warrick a generation prior) was going strong, it was actually EASIER for Black woman to look "Black" in the music industry than it is NOW.

Lil ze, do you notice the pattern in the wave of our Black pop stars in the media, this also transcends into other arenas as well as soap operas, movies etc

Or are you going to continue to behave as if you're so dumbfounded to notice this obvious favortism by using the "they're no less Black argument"? Because no one is arguing that.

It's just that you have to posess a certain *look* in order to get recognition in mainstream society.

Isn't that strange?

But there is room in the industry for sistas of all shades. Remember when Lauryn Hill was at the height of her success (10 Grammies)? Didn't India.Arie's recent album debut at number 1?

if they are no less black, than whats your point? what is this certain "look" you have to possess to get recognition in mainstream society? a look like india arie? rihanna? keisha cole? whitney houston? beyonce? jill scott? who has the certain "look" and what does this look entail? what is the "pattern" you see in the wave of black pop stars? they ALL are black women. so what is the point you are trying to make?

No, there's not any room.

India Arie and Lauryn Hill are the exception, not the rule.

For every one or two India Arie's there are the Beyonces,Alicia Keys, Rihannas, Ciaras, Myas, Cassies, Jennifer Lopezes, Keyshia Coles and MORE. They by far outnumber the India Aries right now.

there is no arguement about this topic. if you see more beyonce's, ciara's, keisha coles, mya's, alicia keys, cassie's etc on mtv and bet, and all of those female artists are black, then maybe these female artists are more attractive than india arie (who is just not that attractive) or jill scott (who has a pretty face, but is fat). if these female artists outnumber india arie or lauren hill, so what? they are ALL black. if there are more female artists who are lighter than india arie, again i say so what? do all black women have to be the color of india arie? ciara or beyonce is no less black than india arie. they are just more attractive. why should better looking women be singled out because they are lighter? who wants to look at a bunch of women that look like india arie or jill scott? i MUCH rather see keisha cole, ciara, or beyonce. they just look better. that is why you see more artists that are closer in look to ciara or keishe cole. ciara is no less black than india arie, so why is it even an issue if you see more of a ciara "type" on tv more than an india arie "type"? they are ALL black, so who cares?

notice nobody has addressed the points i made in my post. it makes me out to lunch to state the obvious? keisha cole, beyonce, and ciara are WAY better looking than india arie or jill scott. all of these women are black. so why do we have to be "forced" to look at more unattractive women and try to claim they are just as attractive as beyonce or ciara when they are not. im not "stuck" on color as many of the posters on this board are. my favorite females on earth are RACHEL TRUE, DOMINIQUE DAWES, AND BIANCA LAWSON. they are all brown skin and to me they are more attractive than beyonce, keisha cole, or ciara. but im not "out to lunch' for stating what is true. beyonce, ciara, keisha cole are all better looking than india arie. color is not the issue. beauty is the issue. if you want to see beauty do a google image search for rachel true, dominique dawes, and bianca lawson.

black children want to be white? agian, this stranger from a far off land, is making blanket statements with no proof to back it up. where is the evidence to prove that black children (as if anyone could possibly know what ALL black children feel or want to be) want to be white. how stupid.
but i understand where this 3rd world degenerate (kola boof) is coming from. look at the beautiful ciara, then look at a picture of this ugly african do kola boof. ciara is on a different level of humanity. if i was a ugly african dog like kola boof, id be jealous of our women also. no matter how dirty this animal (kola boof) speaks about our women, she (kola boof) in her heart knows that our women (ciara, beyonce, keisha cole) are much more beautiful than she could ever hope to be. our women are not phony, they are beautiful. if certain people out there are jealous, fine just admit it. but saying nasty things about women who are obviously beautiful (ciara, beyonce, etc) just proves how jealous you really are.

"Ironically, when Whitney (and Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, Gladys Knight and Dionne Warrick a generation prior) was going strong, it was actually EASIER for Black woman to look "Black" in the music industry than it is NOW."

Point well taken. But the difference is those black women were tremendously gifted vocalists. That certainly is not the case today. The women that seem to draw the ire and hate from a number of posters on this board (not for lack of natural talent –but because of their skin color and nothing else) cannot approach the level of natural talent nor the artistic gifts of Sarah Vaughn, Betty Carter, Ruth Brown, Ethel Innis, Nancy Wilson, Ella Fitzgerald or Etta Jones. They are marketed products appealing to a commercially wider base. These so called marketable hotties that are so commercially popular today could have never survived in the music industry 20 or 30 years ago. There was a time when survival in the music business required talent. That definitely is not the case today.

This is not Black People's hair.

This whole LOOK...has nothing to do
with a "black" woman. She is IMITATING
other races of women, because that's what
colorstruck black men WANT.

She is also giving the message, whether
she MEANS TO or NOT---that Black people
are inferior and that she can only be
beautiful as an IMITATION of some other race.

She's a PHONEY saying---"Look how inferior
I am." BUT SHE DOESN'T KNOW THAT.

I am totally stunned that BROWN BEAUTY 123
sees this blonde hair as "Klassy" instead of
DEGRADING.

Is there a single living human being who
thinks this blond shit is Keisha's hair????

What is the MESSAGE she's sending out about
herself and about us as a people?

She wants SO DESPERATELY to be a white woman.

Why is nobody INTELLIGENT enough to see what
this shit really represents---and what a FOOL
this woman is?

This shit is PATHETIC!

Give me this any day.

Ntfs,

I might be able to tolerate the preference for Whiter-looking female music stars IF they were uniquely talented & skilled singers, songwriters and performers.

Or I might be able to tolerate the lack of talent and skill were there NOT such a DECIDED preference for Whiter-looking females.

But the White-like preference COMBINED with the lack to talent is wholly intolerable.

And there are PLENTY of very BLACK looking MALE sports, music and movie & TV stars (e.g., Michael Jordan, Snoop Dogg and Denzel Washington) who are marketed to a "commercially wider base". So it's interesting that only Black WOMEN must be LESS Black to garner similar status.

Whether they are light or dark, there is a serious dearth of talent out there. I wish Lauryn would make a comeback. She was the shit.
Another underrated talent is Heather Hedley. That girl can blow!
And where the hell is my girl Kelly Price? She lost a truckload of weight and then disappeared. She is one of VERY FEW modern day soul singers left.
What happened to Anita Baker's recent album? Is she touring?

headley's production aint great...music sucks..., at least her first album. I love me some Kelley Price...but she one has like 2 good songs in each of her albums...

Lauryn Hill's first joint was the shit...and Leela James is the joint too!

I also like, though she is more of a stylist than a "singer," Amel Larrieux. Good strong, oft political lyrics!

She is so underrated and overlooked to be so GIFTED and beautiful.

Kola:

The reason is to BREED those black men off the planet, ABM.

Since He Himself is being celebrated---he doesn't notice that the womb it takes to create him is being DISALLOWED.

Slowly....decade by decade....he is CONDITIONED to breed himself into a lighter/whiter watered down version of himself.

Malcolm X and Toni Morrison have both explained this strategy of the White Man through MARKETING PROWESS-----but 30 years later, you see even more of it and more black men perpetuating it.

Black women have now given in...and wear blue eyes and blond hair. They have been defeated by the Society's edict that they are "inferior" and are a STAIN that should be bleached out.

Kola,

I'd be hardpressed to refute the argument you're making here.

It's interesting...

You look at these marvelously constructed ebony Black athletes. I mean, some of these dudes put anything Michaelangelo could have ever even thought of too shame. And what's one of the FIRST thing they do when they score the merest modicum of fame and wealth...run off and start breeding with them a "Becky" or a facsimile there-of.

When you think about it, that has GOT to be amongst the most VILE forms of self-hatred imaginable.

The white man is a "strategy" genius ABM....which is exactly why I agree with you about Mathematics, Engineering, Sciences.

Until our boys and men are made to understand and dominate those sciences--they are slow to catch on to the "strategies" that White men use to have Black men self-destruct.

It's almost like the white man saddles up to Kobe and says, "Here--have some cocaine."

ABM, I would too.

And I am SO BAD in math. Just atrocious.

Luckily my sons love math and the oldest wants to be an astronaut, so he is forced to live, eat and breathe it. He was in a Physics contest recently--but he lost. His daddy is going to pay for him to take the NASA FRYE Program (for 12 year olds) when he's old enough.

Kola,

I am very happy to see your sons love and excel in math and science.

I always revel in hearing and reading about a young Black person who excels in math and science. Because, perhaps more than ANYTHING else, discovery and invention offer Black foks the chance to stem the Eurocentric tide that's washed over us low these millennia.

I believe IF and when Africa ever knows, understands and appreciate this, this world will change...DRAMATICALLY.

Kola, at some point I should put you in touch w/a friend of mine here (http://www.minorityfaculty.neu.edu/profiles/?id=56). I have been meaning to start a STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics disciplines) thread on this board to share some info and links I have been collecting--and hopefully receive some info in return. (But I have been afraid folks would find it too boring and nerdy!)

Both of my girls are also very interested in these fields and recently attended a camp at our local science museum that they just excelled in. But unfortunately, Black children soon become off-track to pursue these fields. (For all sorts of reasons...) And the latest figures for PhDs in STEM fields for people of color has shown stagnation at less than (I think) 2% of all PhDs awarded--And that includes Latinos and Native Americans in addition to Blacks. (So just imagine how small the % is if you just counted Blacks.)

Anyway, maybe I still will begin that thread.

YVETTE,

As I've said in the past....I so envy that you're EDUCATED and CONSCIOUS at the same time.

You are like the daughter I wanted to have.

I'm so proud and happy to hear about your baby lionesses.

I know because of you--they will find focus, despite the setbacks.

I really disagreed with PBG a few weeks back when she disagreed with you posting that fascinating GNOME (?) or whatever about racial DNA.

Though you know my MANTRA...I love that you are so vibrant, intelligent and represent us in such "infinite variety".

I really like who you are.

Yvettep,

I am happy to hear your girls are good in science. My youngest is quite the budding scientist herself. She really WOWED'em at her school's Science Fair this year.

I have in the past tried to champion the virtues of knowledge and interest in science on this site.

Unfortunately, Black kids often fall off from science and engineering because they fail to acquire and maintain the necessary MATH skills.

Sorry I was so brief before--Kola, she and I talk often about how to marshal the (sadly) limited human Black science and technology resources in a way to help children (esp Black kids) excel in these areas. At one point we were brainstorming about starting our own "Saturday Camp" or something here in the Twin Cities. Anyway, that's why I said you two might get in touch. I think she might be interested to hear what strategies you have taken with your sons to maintain their interest and abilities, what programs you wish existed, etc. I'll stop speaking for her, tho--I would definitely be interested!

And ABM, I'd be interested in hearing that same kind of thing from your perspective, too. I do recall some of your conversations around this topic, so I know it's dear to your heart, too.

I guess I'll start that thread so we'll stop taking up this Riannah versus Beyonce thread! LOL

Kola, I was just being sarcastic when I said that Keyshia Cole was klassy--hence the reason I spelled it with a k I was not being serious at all.

Savant...we're not against biracial women.

We're against the RACISM that celebrates them for their "whiteness" while erasing/disallowing Black women/girls for their "blackness".

I love Amel Larrieux and many biracial women...I just resent the way "White Supremacy" USES THEM to degrade and marginalize "black women".

What a tragedy in a country where 80% of the "Black people" are IDENTIFIABLY BLack and darker than a brown paper bag.....the majority of Black Female stars are overwhelmingly BIRACIAL.

Clearly, it's colorism and racism.

There is no other way to explain it, and it's disgusting.

”I might be able to tolerate the preference for Whiter-looking female music stars IF they were uniquely talented & skilled singers, songwriters and performers.”

Excellent point. I agree. I could care less what they look like. Although a number of posters are obsessed with looks and color, that’s not my personal concern or interest. Having talent is however.

”Or I might be able to tolerate the lack of talent and skill were there NOT such a DECIDED preference for Whiter-looking females.”

Understood. As I stated before, they are all marketed commodities being targeted for wider mass appeal. Again, such rank commercialism and subjugation of substance and talent for looks and cross over imagery is pathetic. Black American music has suffered greatly because of this specious strategy.

”But the White-like preference COMBINED with the lack to talent is wholly intolerable.”

I agree. In fact, it's insulting.

”And there are PLENTY of very BLACK looking MALE sports, music and movie & TV stars (e.g., Michael Jordan, Snoop Dogg and Denzel Washington) who are marketed to a "commercially wider base". So it's interesting that only Black WOMEN must be LESS Black to garner similar status.”

Ya know, it’s interesting that you should say that. A friend and I were talking about this very subject a few weeks ago. It’s amazing how black men can be very ethnic looking and dark complexioned and they will be seen as sexy bad boys with much desirability and marketability. When I lived in Japan, the young Japanese girls loved thuggish looking dark complexioned brothers. I was shocked to see this. Brothers in the Under Armor commercials, Terrell Owens, Shaqulle O’Neal, Michael Jordon, DMX and Tyrese Gibson are very marketable and sought after. But black women of the same hue and physical ethnicity are not. Society (including black people) just don’t appear to be very excited nor interested in women who look like Nina Simone. I’m not saying I agree with this but it does seem to be the case.

Dude. I think you NOW see why Kola, Tonya and a few of the other sistas decry, how Black WOMEN are uniquely and especially victimized by colorist preferences.

So let's go to the next step: If T.O., Shaq, MJ, DMX, Tyrese and the myriad other famous/popular Black male media stars brandished, celebrated and married Black WOMEN who looked more like THEM; isn't it POSSIBLE those OTHER foks might begin to appreciate their beauty...as well?

And ABM, lets also remind NFTS that the "color code" is not a characteristic of Black People in their NATURAL SETTING....in Royal Africa, the very blackest men want to marry the blackest women.

For centuries--Africans have put their babies in the African sun to get "blacker".

NFTS needs to realize that this is not some "natural" part of nature.

It's only under WHITE supremacist dictate that a man like Michael Jordan is TAUGHT that a woman who looks like the woman who gave birth to him----is inferior for him to mate with and love.

ONLY "Black Men" are taught to think that way--and this is how they conquer and DIVIDE the black race---by having Black men and Black WOMEN divide the BLOOD itself.

FEMALES choose "POWER" no matter where they are from.

A Black Athlete or Thug Rapper is portrayed as the Ultimate POWER and symbol of Masculinity.

In reality...those Japanese girls will marry a black power symbol and then MOURN the birth of their brown babies--babies that now lack "STATUS"---and will eventually encourage those babies to seek LIGHT and WHITENESS as a "remedy".

The cycle, no matter how it spins, is against us.

But black people feel so honored to be co-habitating with NON-blacks. It's the HEIGHT of being a human being to "niggerstock".

Kola,

One of Destined's friends is biracial. Nice, warm woman (and a hellofvah bellydance instructor).

When she was a kid, her father abandoned her, her mother and siblings because he suddenly lamented that he'd "diluted" the Blackness within this progeny.

He went and found him as Black a woman he could find and America. And HAPPILY made a big ol' mess BLACK chillens.

Although this happened over a couple decades ago, she remains devastated by what happened. Because not only has she struggled as most foks from broken home do. But the experience of being made to feel that you're the product of some great geneological MISTAKE has utterly wrecked her sense of self.

Essentially, she wants to be "Black". But how can you be such when a Black parent rejects that you are such?

I wonder how many Black men experience and do what her father did...

I have heard several cases where black men have done this "back in the day".

I just feel absolute sorrow and sympathy for the children who experience this. It's horrible.

I believe the writer Danzy Senna (who I don't consider "black") was abandoned by her black father for the same reasons.

But it all goes back to that scene in Ralph Ellison's "INVISIBLE MAN" where the black lead character is constantly dreaming about the WHITE forest-like BEDROOM and all its luxurious sweeping whiteness.

It's like an immaculate white, white birthday cake. :-) White wonderland of snowy bright dreamy whiteness.

And then when you actually enter it in real life----POOF---the fantasy dies. White DIRTIES so easily. You become disillusioned.

How tragic.

The "trick" that's played on Black men. College buddies EGGING them to date, marry white--as a matter essential to their bonding.

Of course--to do that--they must tell themselves EPIC lies about the black women they reject, loathe.

Most of them stay it through though.
