not a lover of males? i think her and queen latifah are in the "we don't like guys boat", if y'all know what i mean? to me its just so obvious with alicia keys. even after her "handlers" attempted to make her more feminine, she just is overflowing with "rainbow-flagism". anyone else think alicia keys and queen latifah are in the rosie o'donnell, ellen degeneress category?

Alicia Keys has always appeared a tad "butch" to me. But I mostly attributed that to her trying to affect enuff street cred to get past foks (like Tonya) hatin' on her being biracial.

Hey. Gay Luther Vandross got away with singing love songs to women for 25 years. So I guess we can tolerate a lesbian Keys doing the same.

*shrugs*

I haven't noticed Alicia Keys behavior as being lezbo at all. But I'll take y'all's word for it since I'm kind of slow with things like that.

I didn't realize Luther (God rest his soul - I miss him sooooo much - I cried last time I saw a Luther video) was sweet until he was on Oprah and introduced his "personal trainer" and that man was so openly gay that I thought hmmmmm - why would Luther be traveling with a gay guy and then it dawned on me that I had NEVER seen Luther with a woman.

It's got to be really obvious in order for my gaydar to kick in.

Abm,

How would I know if Alicia has "street cred?" I don't follow her career/music, not hers or any “superstar‘s.” I am so pass that. I just think she's a beautiful multiracial woman...nothing like the half ass, run of the mill garbage that niggerstruck men tend to drag/scrape/fetch up.

I've heard from some of my friends in "the industry" it's well known that Queen Latifah goes both ways. Yuck.

Anyway, I don't think Alicia Keyes is gay. If I remember correctly, she's from NY. That says it all--as NY/NJ women, regardless of color, to me, have some of the most annoying speech patterns, accents and mannerisms. They're just "hard". Alicia, though she is gorgeous and talented, is no exception.

I can see your point about it possibly being a New York thing with Alicia.

Hey everybody. I'm a newbie getting my feet wet.

I can't say if Alicia's gay or not because Kerry's always by her side. But how does one determine if she is gay through the television tube anyway? Has anyone seen her hugged up on another woman at an exclusive celeb party? You just can't tell these days who is or isn't gay.

ABM:

Tonya:

Yeah, well, I appreciate authenticity in all groups of people.

I'm not sure what Alicia Key's beauty should be called: authentically European-like, authentically mixed, authentically half white--I'm new at this multimixed thing--but she isn't weaved out or made to look like something she's not--she hasn't (to my knowledge) been compromised.

She plays with the braids every now & then, yes.

But she's allowed to pay homage to half her roots; and she does it without disrespecting her natural beauty. Now, that, to me, is a whole lot of class to go along with such authentic beauty.

i think alicia keys should take the doberman23 veined hotdog injection test. after the injection she's not happy then she's a lezzy ... because any woman who doesn't like me (relatives or little girls not included) must be gay :-)

Moonsigns:
Yeah. It's just something about New York/New Jersey women that's so predictable. Often times, even when they haven't spoke, I can pick them out in a crowded room. And I'm not at all saying that these women aren't physically attractive upon first glance. Whether they are overtly aggressive or passive aggressive, they just have a "rough" attitude that can even be conveyed through the glare in their eyes, wealthy snobs included. I believe it's truly the result of being born and raised in a bustling and unforgiving 'concrete jungle'.

I find it interesting how some people become so caught up in celebrities' personal lives. I really don't care if Alicia Keyes is straight, gay or bi. I think her music is some of the best out there by young artists. She has overwhelming musical talent and she can rip that piano to threads.

I find her to be a bit unpolished and rough around the edges but I attribute that to her youth. I think of Ms. Keyes as a Roberta Flack in the making. Kudos to Ms. Keyes. Straight, gay or bi - as long as she keeps making great music, at the end of the day, that's all I really care about.

Something about that Keyes woman always seemed fake to me. I can't put my finger on it. In her photographs her face looks like a mannikin's.

And she is no Roberta Flack. Probably never will be.

Chrishayden

And she is no Roberta Flack.

Agreed. She is no Roberta Flack - YET. But what is she, 24, 25? Give Ms. Keyes another 20 years to develop her talent and skills and who knows? I think the potential is certainly there. I can't think of any other young female artist today with as much musical talent and potential for musical genius status. India.Arie comes to mind, VERY talented young woman, but I think guitar is her instrument.

AND yes, Alicia's photos are EXTREMELY airbrushed and do look unnatural. I think that's because she has such bad skin, photographers have to retouch the retouches.

Nooooo!!! Roberta Flack is beyond compare. Not even close. Alicia may be a wannabe Roberta - but she will never be the real thing. And she'll never meet or exceed Roberta Flack's music. Alicia's music is nice - but Roberta's music is PHENOMENAL. How could you compare anyone's music to "Killing Me Softly," "Feel Like Makin Love" or "First Time Ever I Saw Your Face." It's IMPOSSIBLE. Next thing y'all are gonna compare someone to Minnie Riperton. Helloooow. Ain't no comparisons to the old classic grand masters of SOUL. NONE.

I said Alicia has the talent to become a successor to Flack. But I think she's a couple decades away from acquiring the SKILL to ascend to such heights.

I'm sorry but Alicia Keys is too "pop" and too "smiley-fake" to be anywhere near India Arie's league. None of Alicia's Cds can measure up to any of the 3 India has done. India is way deeper than her.

ABM, Roberta Flack hit #1 with her very first hits "Killing Me Softly" and "First Time Ever I Saw Your Face". She wrote both songs and did not need 10 years to "develop", "mature", etc. into what she was from the start. The one word that would describe her whole musical catolog is "integrity". You can't find any records where she sold out what her music was about.

Alicia's music is too contrived. She evokes Aretha Franklin on the opening song, then on the next song she evokes Dionne Warwick. That's followed by her Beyonce pop number and then she does a Carly Simon social mix using Stevie Wonder's stylings. None of it ever defines Alicia Keys if you notice.

We have tons of artists more gifted and more legitimate than Alicia Keys.

Don't laugh, but I think Beyonce is more real and more original than Alicia. I actually paid for Beyonce's stuff and the girl is HOT.

Alicia's music only makes me hungry for some Mary J., Lauryn, Erykuh and India. She belongs in that group, but then she's missing something.

PBG,

I think I agree with everything you say about Alicia. And that's a very astute and eloquent assessment of her and juxtapostion of her to others (though I've gottah still ruminate on that whole Beyonce being "more real and more original than Alica" part.

I've actually expressed concerns and criticism about Alicia on this site (perhaps a couple years ago) that are quite similar to yours.

But, again, I said she had the talent. I think the times and I think what she is, how she looks, her blended racial heritage will make it very DIFFICULT for her to refine her talents and define herself in the way and to the degree that Flack and even some of her contemporaries (which you mentioned) were and will have been able to.

she's prolly sold more albums then roberta flack, i know she straight up murdered india arie record sales. i know, i know ... you may be getting ready to type the blah-blah about how that doesn't mean anything ... but it does. the sign of a good musician or entertainer is to be sucessful in their chosen medium, and sucess when it comes to music is based on record sales and how many asses you can put in seats at concerts. roberta flack wouldn't be selling as good as what she did back then in these times where looks matter as much as how you sound.
...
so there. :p

Wow PBG you really think Beyonce is more original? I respect Beyonce becase she is a peer (I am also an aspiring singer) but in my mind, actual composition beats cherrypicking from a Bag O Tracks anyday. True originality is when you create something from scratch, like Alicia has done. But I don't know about Fallen though. James Brown says that tune is suspiciously similar to "Man's World".

Doberman, I disagree that record sales equate good talent--look at Britney Spears she was and still IS a very limited vocalist with a godawful voice, yet she managed to sell millions because she had the right promotional marketing team behind her.

The same for Jennifer Lopez. It's all about PR marketing.
