On July 18, 2006, from 10 a.m. to noon ET, the Kaiser Family Foundation and The Washington Post will host a forum in the Foundation's Barbara Jordan Conference Center featuring Bill Cosby and a panel of national leaders examining the experiences of young black men in America. A live webcast of the forum will be available at this webpage.

The forum, Paths to Success: A Forum on Young African-American Men, will address the results of a major new national survey conducted by The Washington Post, the Kaiser Family Foundation and Harvard University. The discussion will focus on strategies to enable young black men to succeed in America today and build on themes presented in the Post's series, "Being a Black Man."

The forum will begin with a conversation with Bill Cosby followed by a panel discussion among national leaders and young people. The event will be moderated by Harvard Law School Professor and Foundation Trustee Charles J. Ogletree, Jr. Foundation CEO and former New Jersey Human Services Commissioner Drew Altman will provide opening remarks and highlight key findings from the survey.

Sounds interesting but I wonder if any of this will have any meaningful effect or measured impact. That seems to be the Achilles heel of all these so-called black symposiums, meetings and forums. I don't know of any substantial measurable impact any of them have had after it is all said and done. Good luck

You know who I WISH would chair this council: My high school College Algebra and Physics teachers. Those were some Black men who could REALLY motivate a young brotha to want to study, learn and succeed.

Ntsf, I share your skepticism in general about these types of things. Time will only tell how this one shakes up. I am slightly more optimistic, though, when I read the descriptions of the panelists: Some of them appear to be "the usual suspects" of public intellectuals, political types, etc. But there also seem to be some pretty grass roots type folks in the mix too.

Plus another thing that is a little different about this is it appears to be backed some some fairly substantial bank. Now, depending on your perspective that may be either a blessing or a curse. But the Kaiser foundation in particular has a pretty decent reputation for funding efforts that do produce results, or at least provide hard facts that people who are trying to make a difference on the ground can use.

Believe me, Roxie, they are out there. Keep the faith!

ABM, have you ever dropped these men a line since adulthood? I know they (or, their spouses, kids, and grandkids if they are no longer living or fully present) would appreciate hearing from one of their success stories. I often think about the little ones I used to teach in Head Start and other settings. All of them are teens to young adults now--I can't look at folks in that age group today without thinking of my kids, hoping and praying they are all OK somewhere out in the world...

For somebody who constantly criticizes black folks as being their own worst enemy, I don't see how chrishayden can dare to point a finger at people like Bill Cosby and Stanley Crouch.

Yvettep,

Alas, I have not.

One of them passed on a little over 10 years ago. I had a minor association with his son (we attended the same college for a few years) but lost touch with him when he took a gig overseas.

I was never able to find the other teacher after I finished high school, largely because the high school I attended closed down the year after I graduated and I did not have his home address or phone number.

You know, when you're young, you always feel as though you'll have enuff time for such things. But time itself proves...otherwise.

"May God strike Cosby down before he draws breath to speak."

Why? For telling the truth?

I've said this before and I'll say it again: African Americans constitute 13% of the US population YET own LESS than 2% of it's wealth (by comparison, Saudi Arabia owns over 7% of US wealth). So, to me, the problems of Black foks greatly transcend just our poor, ignorant and ill-bred. American Black foks as a whole - and that INCLUDES Cosby, Oprah and P.Diddy - are wholly impotent and will remain so UNTIL we devise and preserve means of developing and growing ownership and power.
