Lately, it seems more and more black folks have stopped eating meat. Some folks claim to be vegatarian, even though they eat eggs and cheese and drink milk-all byproducts of animals.

I've tried not eating meat, but sooner or later, I'll crave a burger.

My diet consists of mostly vegetables and grains, and I don't eat much red meat - mostly chicken and fish. I've done the vegetarian thing before and it's a good thing because your system is cleared of all the chemicals that are used in meats - you can feel it. But after a couple of years of no meat - you just gotta have a steak or a shrimp or something. LOL.

I was a lacto-vegetarian and I also ate eggs. Can't see myself living off of nothing but veggies. Although avocados and beans have lots of protein, I still ate butter, cheese, ice cream and all of that. There are different types of vegetarians - the vegans don't eat anything but veggies and fruitarians only eat fruit (no veggies). There are a few other types.

Regardless of what we choose to eat, we should all incorporate more fruits and vegetables into our meals. So if you're mostly vegetarian and you eat a burger every once in a while, I don't see anything wrong with it.

Because of a personal interest in preventative health care, I've tried many different types of ways of eating. I've tried the vegan, lacto-vegeterian, vegeterian, raw-food, and blood-type diets. For me, all forms of vegeterianism seem to raise my insulin too much. I seemed to crave meat in order to balance out the high carb intake. I didn't like the way I felt. The raw-food diet made me lose too much weight and made my face look gaunt and unhealthy, especially around my eyes. If one doesn't have quality vit/min supplements, especially B12, it's easy to suffer deficiencies. But I think the raw-food diet is good to do 4 times a year as a seasonal cleanse. The blood-type diet was boring. I've found that the best diet for myself is a combination of all the food groups, little to no refined sugar/carbs, quality oils, and as much water as I can drink. In my opinion, Dr. Diane Schwarzbein has, by far, one of the best recommendations for healthy eating for women.

MoonSigns - I was interested in the raw foods thing, but never got around to it. Obviously I eat salads and such, but I'm not really into eating raw cauliflowers, brocolli, etc. And I couldn't imagine eating a raw potato. When you say that it should be done seasonally, what type of a timeframe would you recommend? How many days at a time? How did you get into the raw thing? Did you buy the books, research the internet, or what? And what types of things did you eat? I'd like to give it a try.

I'm a small portion on the go person, Robynmarie. I don't know how to cook ANYTHING. I buy my food pre cooked portioned and packaged. In the AM I eat breakfast bars or a handful of whole grain cereal with a cup of juice. I get my fats from nuts, some of my fruit from 100% fruit juice and much of my veggies from V8 juice. Anything that doesn't take alot of time or doesn't require ANY kind of cooking - not even boiling - is up my alley. Microwaveable is way okay.

Mzuri,

When I do my seasonal cleanses, I begin on the first day of the new season. Depending on how I feel, I will eat raw foods for 3- 10 days (but it's usually anywhere from 7-10 days). I also get colonhydrotherapy, too. I know it sounds "yuck", but it's amazing how healthy it is for the body!

When I was in my early twenties, I had some health problems that conventional/Western medicine made worse. Therefore, knowing in my heart there was a better way, I began to do research on the net and buy various books. Along my journey, I've had the opporunity (and have been blessed) to encounter many wonderful people--Naturopaths (natural doctor), other raw foodists, M.D.'s who practice holistic health/healing-- who have taught me a lot of what I know.

When cleansing, I usually eat low-glycemic fruits in the a.m. with raw nuts (almonds or cashews). Raw almonds are great because they buffer the fructose. Manna Bread and raw nut butters are also good in the a.m. or as a snack.

Lunch/Dinner is always a salad with homemade dressing made from organic olive oil, flax oil, celtic sea salt, lemon, and fresh herbs. I also consume a lot of avocado, too. There are also tons of greens to choose from. Dandelion is one of the best for cleansing! Beet greens are great as well!

There are also many "raw" bars on the market and some companies that make "raw" convenience foods. The net will be a great resource for such companies.

I also like to drink water with fresh lemon juice during this time. It really helps the liver to filter the toxins from the body. Skin brushing is good to do, too!

But as a word of caution, you will lose weight fast! So if you don't have weight to lose, eat more raw nut butters and avocado, and you can be a bit more generous with the olive oil, too!

Every morning I do my constitution a very big favor by eating a handful of walnuts which I chase down with a 4-ounce blueberry-pomegrante juice cocktail.

ABM and Cynique - You two are crazy!

Thanks MoonSigns for all the great info. I'll research and give it a try in the next couple of months and I'll let you know how it goes. I really don't need to lose any weight - actually have a hard time keeping it on. I had hoped that I would mellow out in my older years and develop a few extra pounds in my hips and thighs but it's not happening. I guess I'll need to eat more :-)

I've done some holistic things in the past - for instance I used to suffer severe headaches (had a spinal cord injury from being in a car crash) and preferred to use feverfew and other herbs/remedies instead of prescription pain medicines. Have also opted for accupuncture treatments on numerous occassions. Was afraid of the needles at first, but then one day I was in so much pain I could barely walk (a friend had to carry me) and I begged my healer to do the accupuncture thing - and that method works miracles!!!

Anyway, thanks again for sharing!!!

Same here. I never could get in to eating steaks and pork chops. I'm currently working on doing more juicing of veggies and fruits and steaming my vegetables. I could eat baked or broiled fish seven days a week if need be. But of course it would have to be prepared differently (and a different mix of fish). Can't get in to the read meat thing though. Although I had a friend tell me a story about a woman he once dated. One evening, they decided to go out for a steak dinner. The waiter asked him how would he like his steak prepared. He told the waiter he wanted his stake medium rare. His date told the waiter to just bring her the stake uncooked and raw on a plate! The waiter told her he could not do that. So she told him have the cook do a ten count on each side and then bring her the steak. He complied. Too hard core for me!

You're right, ABM! I should've said carnivore. One does have to be careful and specific when revealing an appetite for fruits and nuts and meat. heh-heh.
