Singer Jill Scott urges better portrayal for black women in popular music and videos

HOUSTON, Jul. 4, 2006
By KRISTIE RIEKEN

(AP) The portrayal of black women in popular music and videos is too often degrading and the black community must find a way to change these images, best-selling singer Jill Scott said Monday.

"It is dirty, inappropriate, inadequate, unhealthy and polluted," Scott said. "We can demand more."

Scott spoke before a panel that discussed the issue took the stage at the Essence Music Festival's empowerment seminars as part of the magazine's Take Back the Music campaign.

Actor Shemar Moore, rapper Common and former video dancer, Karrine Steffans, who wrote the book "Confessions of a Video Vixen," concerning her exploits, were part of the discussion.

The panel addressed the dangers these images present to young girls and said education and self-esteem will help keep them from believing this is a proper representation of black women.

"Singer Jill Scott urges better portrayal for black women in popular music and videos"

I agree. She is absolutely right. This is something I have never understood -why black women (as a group) have not banned together in unified objection and protest against those disgusting and degrading images of them that is so commonplace in these jaded mindless music videos that young people are being inundated with.

Easy to demand, hard to do. I ask myself if I was an attractive, 18 year-old with a great body and I had a chance to be in a video and be around the excitement and glitz of the music industry, would I be able to resist this? Would I rather be in school, cramming for exams, stuck in a hum-drum life, working part-time at a fast food joint, hooked up with a boyfriend who has no car and a baby's mama, going to bed with a book instead of a fione young member of a road crew, or an assistant to the producer's assistant, which would I choose? Would I not be influenced by how Kobe Bryant noticed his future wife when she was auditioning to be a back-up dancer.Unfortunately, this is what a whole generation of young black girls are confronted with. They simply don't relate to Condoleeza Rice or for that matter, the staid, overweight Jill Scott. And it's not necesssarily about them having low-self esteem; it's about them being empowered by their good physical attributes, about being mesmerized by the bling and the glamour. It's a sign of the times.

INDIA ARIE's Latest CD hit's
#1 on Billboard Albums Chart

By Geoff Mayfield

LOS ANGELES (Billboard) - For the second week in a row, a best new artist nominee of the 2002 Grammy Awards bows at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. As the soulful India.Arie celebrates the best chart week of her career, the most intriguing aspect of this triumph may well be the race that never developed.

First-day sales reported by chains when her "Testimony: Vol. 1, Life & Relationship" reached stores the same day as Dashboard Confessional's "Dusk and Summer" led chart prognosticators to predict that both albums would start in the neighborhood of 150,000, suggesting the two were running neck and neck.

While both acts achieved their best-yet Nielsen SoundScan weeks, this was far from a photo finish.

India.Arie easily exceeded the 150,000 threshold, earning her second No. 1 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and her first on the big chart with a start of 161,000 copies. Dashboard beat its previous best frame by about 10 percent, but closed well shy of first place with 134,000 sold.

Those are the only two albums on the chart to sell more than 100,000, although last week's chart champ, Nelly Furtado, comes close at 99,000 (No. 3, down 55 percent).

How did India.Arie turn what looked to be a close race into a laugher? The answer boils down, in part, to who buys what and how they buy it.

THANK GOD for JILL SCOTT, INDIA ARIE, LAURYN HILL and ERYKAH BADU.

It funny how on one hand we laud the power and independance of Black women but THEN get so hellbent upon rescuing these poor, delicate and helpless Black females from evil Black man. The very concept is hilariously fallacious.

Those phat booty shakin' hip-hop video models are being JUST as mercenary and opportunistic as the producers and artists they perform for. And these women are excercising their right to use their ASSets to further their interests and desires...just as we all do.

Abm, you and Cynnique are totally right. There isn't much people can do to "save" or change the minds of these young video girls/women. I don't think Jill Scott and others are actually interested in saving them though; it’s their audience that people are concerned about. Yes, these women have nice bodies which can in turn be used as a talent, and that’s their right, but what they do is no less toxic to the psyches of young people (boys and girls) than the music/messages that the hip/hop superstars they serve put out.

Tonya,

Well. As long as Black people physically, mentally and emotionally abandon their children, we will have increasing numbers of men and women who will regress to the lowest common denominators of human persona and behavior, ESPECIALLY when concerning earning a living.

Sounds exactly like my own personal mantra. You are exactly right. The truth you speak is bitter and painful but the reality of your words is irrefutable.

Now, now, fellas. There are worst things in this country than being a back up dancer shaking your booty. You could be a CEO who bankrupts your company and devastates the pension plans of your employees. You could be a war-mongering secretary of state who lusts after your boss and supports a war that sends young men to their deaths, while killing women in children in the process. You could be a priest who molests children, or a politician who takes bribes, or a red neck waving a rebel flag, or a physician who prescribes unnecesary tests or performs unnecessary surgery to pay for the college tuition of his kids, or a lawyer who bilks senior citizens out of their life savings, or a white teacher who writes off black students, or a minister whose female congegation members moonlight as his harem. America is the United States of Babylon, folks. The amorality that thrives here is not limited to one segment of the population.

Well, the phrase "lowest common denominators of human persona and behavior" was what rankled me, ABM. And, BTW. I forgot to mention brutal policemen who beat confessions out of innocent suspects when listing offenders who, to me, rank above booty-shakin nymphets. LOL

thank god for beyonce, ciara, and keisha cole. i'd jump over india arie and jill scott to get to ciara or beyonce. they are just more attractive. and no it's not because they are lighter. jill scott is fat. and india arie is just not attractive. vivian green is better looking than all of them.

LOL!!! lil_ze you made me spill my orange juice on my keyboard. i have india arie's cd it's pretty good i damn sure didn't buy it because of her looks though. actually the only cd that i bought because i was swayed by looks was that deborah cox cd... but i was like 16 years old then. when it comes to the whole entertainment package though and watching them in concert or on a video ... i see why alicia keys spanked india arie in the grammys that one year.

D23, I might direct you to the Goapelle (spl?) cd if you like a combo of (a certain kind of) looks combined with decent R&B/cross genre music. On the other end of the spectrum (color-wise and music wise) is Liz Wright, who is also a looker with a great jazz/blues voice.

I love Jill Scott. I have to agree with my husband, though: Listening to her music always makes me hungry as heck. Girlfriend can pipe, her spoken word is topical and on point, but she sure does make one salivate over the thought of a big plate of red beans and rice.

You'll just have to pee on yourself when I name Beyonce as my choice, ABM. Janet Jackson is also in the running. Any singer who can sing while she dances and stay on key ranks high with me. The day of the block buster vocalists like Chaka and Aretha and Patti seem to be confined to the old school ranks.
