hello my fellow brohams and brohamettes! today i was getting my grocery shop on, and low and behold i must've picked the right day. there where women in there all over the place and in every asile too, had i been back in my horny teen years i would have been forced to stay in the frozen food area :-)
anyways it's no surprise to see women in the there shopping and i know it's summer but gat dayamn! i never seen so much plump booty next to rump roast next to chicken breast next to mellons next to ...ok i'll stop but you get my point.
where was i... oh yeah, before anyone tries to hit me with the "what's this have to do with race, culture, or economy?" question, my answer is ... nothing you terd, i'm just wondering how many women out there get dressed up to go grocery shopping because what i witnessed today, has been better than what i've seen at some clubs that i've been to. aiiight i'm done, feel free to comment ...except for serenasailor because i know you probably just stay in the sausage link aisle and have naughty thoughts.

Didn't you know? The grocery store is the number one pickup spot. That and the home improvement center.

I admit, I do get dressed to kill - hair, make-up, jewelry, the whole nine - when I run common errands. I'm single (twice divorced). You never know who you might meet or WHERE. On the rare occasion when I throw 'just anything' on, I pray all the way there and back that NO ONE sees me. What! I break speed records.

Interestingly enough, more men have approached me when I look 'natural' than when I'm all dolled up. Hmm...

Aaah, thx for opening my eyes, ABM. I never looked at it that way.

I'd assumed that most men didn't want to be bothered with a 'fussy' woman. A DIVA. Whereas a woman who looks natural appears more approachable, less fussy. But it's a self-esteem thing. Well, doesn't it work the opposite way as well?

Couldn't it also be presumed that a woman who is sooo into her appearance is overcompensating for low self-esteem, just as it's presumed that a natural-looking woman doesn't take pride in her appearance due to low self-esteem?

I always pay attention to my appearance when I go super market shopping because I so often run into former co-workers, or friends from the old neighborhood and I love to hear them talk about how retirment agrees with me, or how I look sooo good! Makes my day, - makes it worth squeezing into to some tight jeans and covering my corn rows with my short cropped medium golden brown wig, as I hide behind my designer sunglasses and flash my lip-glossed grin.

No and no. There's nothing wrong with trying to look your best. Just because you prefer to be dressed when you run errands (hair, makeup, nice outfits) doesn't mean you have low self-esteem. And you're correct - you never know who you might meet when you are out and about. Besides being on the prowl, you might make new business contacts, run into old friends, co-workers, or whatever. And people appreciate you when you look nice. In some cultures it is a courtesy to others to fix yourself up before going out. As for going places looking any old kind of way (stink, curlers in hair, mussy hair, ashy face, dressed like a homeless person) - WTF are you thinking???

Mzuri - No and no.

I disagree. How many times have we seen a nicely dressed woman and overheard someone remark, "She think she cute."?

How many times have we seen someone tore up from the floor up and overheard someone remark, "Damn, she just don't give a fuck."?

And don't we always say that men who drive flashy cars are overcompensating for one thing or another?

So, to a certain extent, public concensus does associate our self-esteem with our appearance.

People tell me I think I'm cute all the time. Who cares. I'm cute! Look, I went to the bank yesterday to sign documents for a substantial unsecured line of credit to expand my business. The banker (whom I had only spoken to on the phone) and I were sitting side by side (in separate club chairs) in front of his assistant's desk. First he told me I was beautiful, and after a while he said "damn you smell good." This coming from a very conservative white man. Now how do you think I was dressed going to the bank? Like raggamuffin??? LOL! And I'm still laughing about that episode today.

Women seem to look just as much as men do at other women. When I used to dress up all the time, females would just stare at me so hard like I stole their man.

I think it is cultural/geographic. I grew up in a small town in southern California where 'haters' ruled and 'she thinks she's cute' was tantamount to being mean or disreputable. Then . . . I moved. Boy, what an eye opener. I met women who appeared to pray to the idol of cute before they left the house each morning.

I always feel better about myself when I dress up and am approached more often, but maybe that's because of my attitude. Even better than that, people are plain friendlier (again - my attitude?).

I'm not going to lie and say I dress up for grocery or home depot, but maybe I should start!

I think that it's better to look good without looking like you've spent too much time on looking that way. The key is to make it look natural. Light make-up. Avoid designer clothing - I buy expensive clothes but I never buy anything trendy or with a name printed on it. Wear as less jewelry as possible - I wear studded or tiny hoop earrings, a watch, and maybe a necklace. I also wear my hair natural - washed and conditioned everyday with a small amount of leave in conditioner. And likewise my nails are done naturally - regular manicure, clear nail polish.

Too many women LOOK overdid, which, to me, is worse than looking tore up.

hmmmm - I don't know? I've seen some toe up that I wouldn't trade for any amount of made up.

But

we had this nurse in junior high who, I realize now, couldn't see very well; who was in full drag every day. Yeesh - scary - hideous.

We guessed she pulled her wrinkles to get the makeup lines straight, but when she let go the shit snapped back in every direction.

I agree sometimes less is definitely more.

Not to preach or anything…but if you spend most of your beauty time on eating right, working out, taking vitamins and herbs, and practice good skin care management…you really won't need more. Women are forever asking me for make-up tips--they think that I somehow know more than them about applying make-up.... Fact is though I don’t. I know very little about applying make-up. What I do is take good care of my skin, which enables me to apply just enough make-up to accent my skin tone. Make-up is not meant to be used as a cover up to perfection. In order to get that flawless look, you have to get your skin in a semi flawless condition; that way, it’s easier to apply the make-up the way it was intended - conservatively. If your skin is extremely damaged, however, a small amount of make-up isn't going to make a different, so you wind up having to use more and a large amount is always a no, no…unless you know exactly what you are doing. And since most of us don’t have a clue as to what we’re doing, it is best to keep the skin in good health. Still, when I tell women my skin care regimen - which includes diet and workout - they act as if it's too much for them to do. But that's what's needed in order to achieve a successful flawless but “less is more” creation.

Welll, Tonya what you describe is your own conservative style. Some women prefer to add a little flair to their appearance which serves to make a personal statement and they would describe you as a "plain Jane". To each her own and good taste and moderation are, indeed, the bottom line. Beauty rituals also depend on whether or not you are among those lucky enough to be born with the naturally good skin that does not require strict diets and herbs and vitamins. (Herbs?)

What's normal skin? Skin that has to be constantly tended to with a vigorous regimen? That's problem skin. Normal skin requires nothing more than to be kept clean and moisturized. This is the best-kept secret of the billion-dollar cosmetic industry.

"Normal skin requires nothing more than to be kept clean and moisturized."

Umm. Yes.

And billions of people have it.

Or are you saying there's no improving upon normal?? Hmmm. Interesting.

Anyway my initial post was about Maintaining and obtaining FLAWLESS skin, NOT NORMAL SKIN. And I've always been told that flawless skin requires a combination of the three: diet, exercise, good genetics, which differs a great deal from what you've implied. There seems to be quite a bit of work that goes into it. Models and athletes have some of the most flawless skin known to man. It's mainly because much of the food and exercise that many of them get/eat deliver a better blood and oxygen flow to their skin. This is not to say, though, that good skin is the primary goal for athletes or people that eat well/work-out. Not in the least. For me it’s a secondary much welcomed plus.

“What's normal skin? Skin that has to be constantly tended to with a vigorous regimen? That's problem skin”

Again..

Are you saying diet and exercise are standard treatments for problem skin??

Of course I’m not saying that you are wrong nor am I claiming to be the expert on problem skin. Infact I’d bank that you know much, much more about the topic. But I haven't heard of many demonologists prescribing diet and exercise as solutions for problem skin, sorry

There is no substitute for good genes. Flawless skin is usually inherited. Didn't I contend that "beauty rituals also depend on whether or not you are among those lucky enough to be born with the naturally good skin that does not require strict diets and herbs and vitamins." To me, normal skin is skin that is neither too oily or too dry and doesn't have pimples or pits. I would opine that in addition all of that, flawless skin would include having even-toned coloring. I don't know whether dermatologists prescribe diet and exercise for acquiring or caring for flawless skin but what you said below made me think this was your postion on the subject.
"...if you spend most of your beauty time on eating right, working out, taking vitamins and herbs, and practice good skin care management…you really won't need more."
All I can say further is that, like my mother and 2 sisters, I've always had smooth skin and I've never done anything special to keep it that way. It is as much a part of my face as my eyes, nose and mouth are. And is this boring subject going nowhere, or what?

Didn't Tonya say she visits the dermatologist? I don't know, but don't you normally visit (and pay) the skin doctor because something is wrong with your skin? Or do you go just because. Do you really need a doctor to tell you to wash and moisturize???

Cynnique:

Tonya:

I'm not sure why. Had you read more than that first line you would have seen that I was speaking from personal experience...not any thing I heard from an expert. That was abundantly clear. Also, it is very apparent from your last post that your definition of good/flawless skin differs from mine drastically. In addition to good coloring and zero pimples, there are no wrinkles, crow’s feet, lines/cracks, enlarged pores and things of that nature on flawless skin. I have family members that are around your age and they have very little of those. Though genetics may play a significant part in this, eating well and physical fitness have been common traits among them. I doubt if they’d look this good had they not taken care of themselves. Furthermore, what you described as smooth in your last post...I couldn't disagree more. I call it wrinkled, cracked and saggy frankly (no disrespect at all). It is the complete opposite of my definition of flawless so you're right; this conversation can only end fruitlessly.

I'm not sure how dermatologists operate in your neck of the woods or how they were when you were coming up...but the ones today are very much into the beauty care industry. Some have their own line of skin care products. My dermatologist's office is ALWAYS crawling with women door to door. Nowadays women visit their dermatologist for treatments just as they do other beauty solons. I'm AMAZED that you don't know this...truly, truly amazed!

Hi Tonya,

I'm about to start having something that EVERY woman should get into if she can afford....Micro-dermabrasion Treatments (facials)....

3 of my girlfriends (2 black and 1 latina) have completed the 12 treatment program and they look YEAAAARS younger w/o plastic surgery.

This is IDEAL for Black women---because the Micro-dermabrasion (NOT regular Demabrasion) can be done to black skin safely with no discoloring...and since most Black women don't really need full face lifts at 35-45....this is really ideal. I LOVE THE WAY MY FRIENDS LOOK!

It only takes 15 minutes every 2 weeks at your DERMATOLOGIST office for 12 weeks--costs about $300 a treatment in L.A. and .....WOW

These women look so damned good!!! (It's after about the 4th treatment that you really wonder if they've found the fountain of youth).

It takes about 6 treatments for Dark Skinned black women...or 12 treatments for Light Skinned black women in all.

But the results are worth it. One of my friends had a childhood scar on her nose and the MDB took it off. It peels away layers of your face causing a re-generation of skin cells and soft dewy GLOWING skin.

REMOVES WRINKLES, FINE LINES, SCARS, BLACKHEAD PITS.

I already have gorgeous skin to be honest, but I do look my age--and I hate wearing make-up.

BTW, Tonya---you wanted to see a "recent" photo of me, and I'm featured in the SUNDAY (tomorrow's) New York Post--I believe they have an ONLINE edition--and they photographed me.

I have smooth skin with smiles lines around my mouth. I have no enlarged pores or blotches or deep wrinkles or uneven coloring or pimples or crows feet or puffy bags under my eyes. I am not braggin about this just stating the truth. I didn't mention that I also inherited a big mouth and a slight overbite and bushy eybrows which I thin out by arching them. And a dermatolgist is, after all, a physician who specializes in skin problems. If you don't have a skin problem why would anyone go to a dermotologist? Do you really need a doctor to tell you the common sense things involved in basic skin care? Dermatologists have a vested interest in branching out with their own expensive products, telling women they need to visit them on a regular basis. They want to make money! They are capitalizing off of gullible vain women. I challenge any dermatologist to do offer me a better facial than the apricot scub I buy from Walgreens for $2.98.

Hey Kola!!!

Gotta get copy of that photo shoot--I know you look stunning--you always do!

I agree about the Micro-dermabrasions--I read alot about them at my dermatologist office and seen many of the women who have them done. They all look beautiful! The one thing I notice when I walk into that office is that allll of the women seem gorgeous. It's quite intimidating some times. LOL! But yeah I agree w/should take advantage of these treatments if they can afford them.

Kola:

I'm about to start having something that EVERY woman should get into if she can afford.

Tonya:

You know something though Kola. Now that I think about what's been posted on this thread, maybe some women just don't know alot about spas, treatments and dermatologists/the treatments they offer. I never realized that this was the case--I am completely stunned. And I can't say it's a cultural thing because all of the women I see at my dermatologist office are black. I'm assuming it's generational and/or economical according to what's been posted here. Anyway, maybe some women are not aware of what's available to them.

What's so amazing about it? I'm such a natural beauty that I have never required a dermatologist's care or advice on maintaining my face. You see, I'm not high maintenance - I prefer to keep things simple. But different strokes. Right?

Something tells me you're just cheap and lazy. But whatever. Different strokes for cheap folks.

I'm rather stunned, Tonya, that you don't realize that this whole beauty culture you are immersed in falls under the category of "pampering". Rather than being about health, it's more about women having a need to indulge themselves, and the feeling of fulfillment they derive from spending a lot of money on superficial beauty aids that dermatologists are conning them into thinking they must have. The whole cosmetic industry is all about packaging and marketing. All lipsticks and powders contain the same ingredients. All moisturizers and facials do the same thing. But add an fragrance to them, tamper with their consistency, make them an appealing color, dress them up in an attractive box or container, hire a high-profile celebrity as a poster girl, slap a high price tag on them and a women respond in droves. Furthermore, consumer reports have shown that very few of these products live up to their extravagant claims. An honest dermatologist will admit to you that skin does not absorb moisture. It has to trapped on its surface with a sealant. Ordinary cold cream does this just as well as anything out there. Egg white makes a perfect pore tightener and oat meal a great facial, baking soda a refreshing spa, a bottle of lotion containing aloe from the dollar store an effective lubricant, witch hazel an excellent astringent. But these things are too commonplace for women who place a great stock in high price tags, women who want to luxuriate in their dreams of being special.

Cynnique, I don't know how to cook oatmeal. And what do you have to do to those egg whites because I'm horrible at mixing too?

Just separate the white from the egg yolk and stir the white a little, then rub it all on your face and let it dry to a glaze. You don't have to cook the oat meal. Just mix some water and oat meal together and stir vigorously until the mixture becomes pasty and then slap it on your face and leave it on for about 20 minutes.

Tonya, you have me rollin. Why would you say that I'm cheap and lazy? Have you heard those horror stories about the women at the nail salons who caught infections from unsterilized implements (Paula Abdul). Or the ones who caught God-awful diseases from putting their feet into those filthy whirlpools. I won't bother posting all the ones about doctor's offices and hospitals, I'm sure you're aware of those already. And no, your doctor's office is not some space lab sterile environment. It's not. Especially if she's doing spa treatments.

Although we're just now hearing about this, it's nothing new. And FYI - I am a GERMOPHOBE. I am certified OCD. All my life since childhood. I will absolutely NOT visit any sort of an establishment where I might pickup some nasty filthy shit that I can't get rid of. And why would I pay a DOCTOR for a facial that I can do myself? Or pay someone to push my cuticles back, when I can do that while I'm soaking in the bathtub? That's being cheap?

Quit acting like you're so wonderful and that you keep everything so simple and natural, when the reality is that you have regular "beauty treatments" at the dermatologist. You're such a phoney.

And BTW - some other lovely ingredients for facials are avocados, honey, and mayonnaise.

Mzuri, I saw a documentary about a female who is germ phobic. If you are anything like her, then, NOOOO, you're not lazy. This woman spent countless time on making sure she and EVERYTHING around her was clean....She wouldn't even drive her spanking new car because she felt it was no longer clean so she went out and bought another brand spanking new one. But it wasn't only her money that got lost. A lot of her time went to washing and cleaning...and this was in addition to all of the normal things people do. So no; you can't be lazy when you're like that. Uh-uh. P.s., mayo, honey, avocado, thanks.
