A fictitious conversation between two black women.

Karen- “So how’s it going Diedra?”

Diedra- “Just great Karen. My job is going well, I close on my house in two days and except for the lack of good black men in this world, all is well.”

Karen- “What do you mean lack of good black men?”

Diedra- “You know what I mean. Most are either in jail, unemployed, on drugs, got babies all over the place they’re not taking care of, unintelligent or gay. I think I might start dating some of these white guys who I notice have their eye on me”

Karen- "Weren't you just ranting the other day about black men with white women?"

Diedra- "Yeah but there's no shortage of good black women for the brothers to choose from. Can't say the same about the other way around though."

Karen- “Come on now. I know it’s hard to find a good man out there but I know that there is a good black man out there for you if you really want one. What about the ones Shante and I have tried to hook you up with? What about David for instance? He’s a nice hard working guy who can take care of his own.”

Diedra- “Karen be for real. I’m a high level executive at an investment firm and he’s an electrician. He’s a nice guy and all but I’ve worked too hard and too long to settle for a man who isn’t on my financial or educational level. A man working in a uniform with his name on it just isn’t my thing”

Karen- “That’s ridiculous. Not only does he make good money, If you put a suit on the guy, you wouldn’t know the difference.”

Diedra- “But the difference is still there.”

Karen- “What was wrong with Eric, the staff accountant who’s been asking you out for the longest?”

Diedra- “He’s only starting out at $30,000 per year. No way I’m dating a man who makes less than I do. I can do bad by myself.”

Karen- “Okay then, what about Paul? He’s a stockbroker.”

Diedra- “That short little guy? He’s only 5 foot 7 for crying out loud!”

Karen- “But you’re only 5 foot 2 yourself!”

Diedra- “I have my standards Karen. I’m not compromising them for anybody.”

Karen- “Jamal is six foot 1. What was wrong with him?”

Diedra- “Jamal can’t dance and he’s way too white acting. He listens to The Carpenters for crying out loud.”

Karen- “He just has eclectic tastes in music, that’s all. The Carpenters aren’t my thing either but I wouldn’t reject a good man just because of that. Besides, what would you expect if you went with a white guy?”

Diedra- “He’s white. I’m supposed to expect that.”

Karen- "I suppose that Marvin, who's 6'4, makes good money and is working on his masters degree is beneath you too huh?"

Diedra- "Not really. He's going to have to get rid of that 1995 Honda Civic before I'm seen with him though. Surely he can afford a better car than that."

Karen- "I've asked him about that myself but according to him, it's paid for, which means he's saving on car notes, he takes good care of it, it's reliable transportation, the gas mileage is great and the insurance is cheap. That makes sense to me."

Diedra- "Then maybe he can get some schoolteacher or cashier to ride in it with him. I've worked too hard for what I've got to settle for less than the best in any man."

Karen- “So it’s like that. You say you can’t find a good black man yet you rejected one good man because he’s blue collar, another one because he makes less money, another one because he’s too short, even though he’s still taller than you, another because he was too ‘white’ acting and yet another because of the car he drives?”

Diedra- “Yeah. Isn’t the black male shortage pitiful?”

Karen- “(((Shaking head))) Yeah Diedra. Pitiful.”

BTW, Karen has a man.

Hello Sigmaman3! This is interesting reading and so very true. But you forgot the part about how the Brother has got to be the exact precise shade of Black that we prefer. Because if he's even a smidgen off, that would be totally unacceptable to the discerning Black female.

I don't think sisters are that picky anymore. Many are seeing the shorting and re-evaluating their "requirements". Many are even "settling"...
Furthermore, a top-level executive female may not want to marry someone who makes SIGNIFICANTLY less than her--not because she "can do bad all by herself", but because eventually he WILL feel emasculated (contrary to what many men say), and she will have to spend the duration of the relationship protecting his ego.

"Diedra- 'I've worked too hard for what I've got to settle for less than the best in any man.'"

"Karen- 'So it’s like that'."

Good lord. They've stooped to recruiting women to push their emotionally abusive propaganda that black women have no choice but to settle for the lazy, irresponsible black men left, those who've been paroled, too segregated to hook up with poor white women, or haven't died from their gun shot wounds or their H.I.V infection yet. Pathetic. And funny how upper middle class black men who are also experiencing a natural mate shortage wouldn't even think of settling for such. They do exactly what Diedra said she was going to do. Girl, go on get that white man!

[I don't think sisters are that picky anymore.]

Not as a whole but the ones who cry that tired "Aint no good black men out there." BS certainly are.

[Many are seeing the shorting and re-evaluating their "requirements".]

That would be down to earth sistas like Karen.

[Many are even "settling"...]

That would describe those who are into thugs and losers yet still bitch about how black men are dogs when things don't work out.

[Furthermore, a top-level executive female may not want to marry someone who makes SIGNIFICANTLY less than her--not because she "can do bad all by herself", but because eventually he WILL feel emasculated (contrary to what many men say), and she will have to spend the duration of the relationship protecting his ego.]

There may be some truth to that but that's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about those who find any man who makes less than they do to be beneath them yet all they can do is bitch and whine about a black male shortage.

Who wants a man that don't have SHIT???

Most black men who whine about Black women being superficial, stuck-up, and whiny are the ones in particular that are mad that they don't have a damn pot to piss in so they take their frustration out on Black women because they don't qualify for relationship material. They're needy men who don't have a car, a good job, no decent educational background, and are mad as hell that women don't want to pick up the pieces.

These men are the ones who
A) Are in their late 20s early 30s pushing damn 40 who still live in their moms basement

B) Don't have a car

C) No degree, no skills, no training no nothing

D) Can't keep a steady job. And when they do find work their damn near 30 working at McDonald's

E) Have heavy past criminal baggage that prevent them from keepin or getting a job

F) No license. It was revoked because of traffic violations

G) Probation.

I've came across Black guys that met every single criteria on this list. And when their disadvantages slowly start to unravel over a period of time, these men lash out and call "Black" women bitches, whores, sluts, and golddiggers.

Everyone's life is not perfect, and men who fit this criteria still have the potential to turn their life around and get back on track. But FIRST you need to get your shit together before you go out seeking women and expecting them to want to deal with all your whiny ass baggage.

That shit gets tiring when you date a guy who no damn car/no job/ and who doesn't have his own place. You're being placed in a situation where 9 times out of 10 you're getting used. More than likely, you'll end up having to drive everywhere, and if he don't have any cash he can't help you out with the gas money.

I know a guy who HATES black women because he doesn't have a car, a job, or his own place and the girl's get sick and tired of looking after him. So he dates white girls who are hard up for some black dick, and they take good care of him too.

And yes, Diedra was too picky. But she probably has good reason to be considering her financial status. Most men would be intimidated by her success and wealth, which is why she looks for her equal.

Women like Diedra, and many do exist in real like, are saditty superficial snobs with chips ont he shoulder who want a status symbol over a good man who really cares for her yet won't take responsibility for her inability to find a black man, simple as that. That stuff you posted about certain trifling black men doesn't even apply. Every single man that Diedra rejected was hard working, responsible, took good care of his own, didn't have any baggage and would have made a good catch if she gave him a chance. Those cops outs you gave are irrelevant.

"Scrubs" and "bills, bills, bills" by destiny's child are two of my favorite songs--almost anthems. At the same time I'm trying to embrace Pat Collin's argument that traditional American gender roles isn't a realistic goal for AAs (due to racism) so we ought to be more flexible with who pays what and when. It's a tough one to swallow though. Two solid hours of workout seven days a week, no Haagan Daaz, no cookies-n-cream, no mid morning binges, no late night treats, may not be for sale… but it doesn’t come cheap.

LOL Mzuri, I'm just trying to find the right man to settle down with.

Sigmaman,

The average woman is not like Deidra.

My perspective is from the average Black woman who run across men who don't meet the basic requirements for survival--like a car, a job, a diploma/degree/trained skill and a decent apartment or home--when they don't fit the bill these men go out of normal bounds by labeling black women as "golddiggers" for wanting a mate who meets a rather modest criteria.

Just like when the song "No Scrubs" first hit the airwaves black men were so defensive about the message. And I couldn't even fathom why. They weren't talking about good honest working men--it was directed towards the losers--men who don't pay child support, don't work, don't have a car, and were complete moochers. I bet the song probably hit home for far too many men. These type of guys are usually insecure, and overly defensive about their situation and don't like being called out on their shit.

The song "Bills Bills Bills" was taken out of context. People to this day STILL think its about a young woman getting a man to pay all her bills for nothing. When in fact, if you listen to the verses and not just the catchy misleading chorous, it's about a male who takes advantage of a woman by running up her bills without wanting to pay her back.

[The average woman is not like Deidra.]

I understand that. It's the Diedra's, however, who are doing all the bitching and trying "something new" (even thought there's nothinG at all new about it)and they're the kind of whiny waiting to exhale BW that we're no longer listening to.

[My perspective is from the average Black woman who run across men who don't meet the basic requirements for survival--like a car, a job, a diploma/degree/trained skill and a decent apartment or home--when they don't fit the bill these men go out of normal bounds by labeling black women as "golddiggers" for wanting a mate who meets a rather modest criteria.]

And, once again, that's not the kind of black male I'm talking about. I have no respect for any woman who'd settle for that kind of loser. Expecting a man to have those basic requirements is totally reasonable.

[Just like when the song "No Scrubs" first hit the airwaves black men were so defensive about the message. And I couldn't even fathom why. They weren't talking about good honest working men--it was directed towards the losers--men who don't pay child support, don't work, don't have a car, and were complete moochers. I bet the song probably hit home for far too many men. These type of guys are usually insecure, and overly defensive about their situation and don't like being called out on their shit.]

While I wasn't really into the song, I understood what they were talking about and didn't take offense to it. Notice in real life though that left Eye (may she R.I.P.) spent many years with an abusive dog who, to this day, is ridiculously behind on child support and T Boz was married to a thug rapper who can't say a single sentence without a cuss word or the N word in it. I used to like TLC's music but their choices in men are contradictory to what they sing about.

[The song "Bills Bills Bills" was taken out of context. People to this day STILL think its about a young woman getting a man to pay all her bills for nothing. When in fact, if you listen to the verses and not just the catchy misleading chorous, it's about a male who takes advantage of a woman by running up her bills without wanting to pay her back.]

See above.

Once again, if you read the post, this wasn't about a woman who refused to get with a sorry trifling irresponsible man. I don't know why you and others don't get it.

No you don't get it: An electrician to a high level executive just may very well be sorry, trifling, and irresponsible economically. And let’s not forget. We're asking black women to settle for black men who can "take care of their own"… instead of taking care of his woman, which is what has been expected of men in many wealthy societies. Now, black men have been at a disadvantage so it's unfair to compare them to what other men were/are capable of doing. But it's also unfair to expect, what‘s more, demand, that black women be okay with never knowing what it's like to be treated like a queen.

I thought I was following this, but now I'm a bit confused. I want to be with a man with similar education level for the purpose of conversation, etc. I do not understand turning down such a man, because he makes less money. In our society the basics are pretty much a given for two people who work hard and manage their finances responsibly. If she's so high level, then he can spend all his money treating her like a queen. My observation is that many highpowered men, aren't impressed by a woman's money or position. They want someone who will cater to their needs and treat them like a king (with their money), and look good on their arm. Maybe we should take a lesson from them!

This whole thread is one of those not worth even going back and forth about. There are men out there who dont want tto settle for that woman who just wants someone to take care of them, and there are women out there who don't feel the need to take on a man as a project. It goes both ways. I have money, cars, education, faith ambition, and I look damn good! (thank you) and still get put to the test when I walk into Visions (ATL Night club for menless high powered women) Personally I think it's funny, cause I can keep my money, status, and good man qualities to myself and let tricks like diedra keep lookin! Exactly ABM, some is very real...and, Again, some is what Pat Collins wrote regarding gender roles and AAs. It ISN'T realistic to expect black folks to take on the “gender specific roles” that has traditionally been heralded in this and other societies. I agree. We DO have to find compromising ways to get by, because working together, as Collins wrote, is still the only way for black families to function in this and other (racist) societies--all true… but only when it includes the word “WE.” Tyrone can be Tarzan - *KING* of the multi-racial, loose titty jungle. But when Deidra even talks about being Deidre, she’s a gold-digging cutthroat slut--(Foul ball! Not fair! Can't happen!).... Look, I’m with Collins for the most part--sacrifice does make the most sense. But it’s also a two way street - all or none--so *WE* can’t fault a women for preparing herself for all or none.

Tonya: 'You're talking about women's lib'
'Dierdra is every woman'

I thought Deirdre was a 'high level executive at an investment firm'. Sounds like she loves her job and isn't looking for somebody to sit her down, so she's already liberated as far as I can see.

Ever heard of the term 'house husband'? They belong mostly to white women who've made the choice to earn and leave the nesting chores to their men. It is all about quality of life. Maybe she feels like a queen coming home to happy kids and a clean house.

I think sometimes we get caught up in the fact that there are a lot of white millionaires - but who says they all treat their women like queens?

You're talking about women's lib, right? . . . Dierdra is every woman.

Femrenoir:

. . . .Sounds like she loves her job and isn't looking for somebody to sit her down, so she's already liberated as far as I can see."

Tonya:

Well, if that's what you call liberated then, my bad, Diedra is every BLACK woman because black women have been holding it down since 1823. Shyyyt

Now, that's what *I* call liberated: CHOICES.

White women have been liberated for years. Like I said, Women's Lib, right?.... Well, Dierdra's a black women. She's got the kind of "liberation" on post number: 2666.

[No you don't get it: An electrician to a high level executive just may very well be sorry, trifling, and irresponsible economically.]

So would a corporate CEO. Ever heard of Enron?

[And let’s not forget. We're asking black women to settle for black men who can "take care of their own"… instead of taking care of his woman, which is what has been expected of men in many wealthy societies.]

In other words, you want a sugar daddy.

[Now, black men have been at a disadvantage so it's unfair to compare them to what other men were/are capable of doing. But it's also unfair to expect, what‘s more, demand, that black women be okay with never knowing what it's like to be treated like a queen.]

To be treated like a queen, shouldn't one act like one? No one is entitled to be treated like anything just because of their color. If you think I'm going to consider Shaniqua from Da Hood, for instance, who has five children by five different babydaddies (all in jail), has a $200 hairdo and wears nothing but designer labels but can't pay her bills (My bad, the man is supposed to do that for her, right?), is living on my tax dollars, has a bad attitude and who's morals are in the toiler, to be a queen, you're as wrong as the day is long.

If she's your momma, damn skippy; your babymomma, goddamn skippy; some snatch you trick in her low rent apartment come sun down…...you good for nothin’ right, Trick Skippy!

You treat her like a Black Amarican Queen!!! Maybe her kids will grow up to be kings and queens.

That's the problem with trifling niggers...

[If she's your momma, damn skippy;]

That aint my mama! My mother is a dignified lady with STANDARDS and what I mean by standards is meaningful things that money can't buy!

[your babymomma, goddamn skippy;]

I don't have a babymomma. I have a wife and we waited four years before having our first child! Unlike Shaniqua, we both believed in protecting ourselves until we we're married or ready to have children.

[some snatch you trick in her low rent apartment come sun down…...you good for nothin’ right, Trick Skippy!]

I don't know who or what you're describing but your "Black women can do no wrong." mentality shows that maybe some of that is in YOU.

[You treat her like a Black Amarican Queen!!!]

Only if it's warranted! No one deserves to be treated like anything other than what they give out, PERIOD!

[Maybe her kids will grow up to be kings and queens.]

I'm not responsible for anybody's kids but my own! That's the difference between you and me. I believe in holding EVERYONE personally responsible for their lives while you, on the other hand, feel that black women are exempt from that and anything and everything that they do wrong is somebody else's fault. You'd better wake up quick!

[That's the problem with trifling niggers...]

A black person using the N word I see. If you ever see or hear a white person using it, keep your mouth shut.

[they want the perfect lady]

I never said that.

[yet refuse to do one thing to help RAISE ONE.]

Once again, the only kids I'm responsible for are MY OWN! Unlike the so-called "queens" like Shaniqua from Da Hood, I did the responsible thing and protected myself so that I didn't have any kids born out of wedlock or that I couldn't take care of. How in the hell you can call me trifling while giving irresponsible tricks a free pass is beyond me but I guess when you're a professional victim who lives in a "Black woman exempt from responsiblity." dream world, you tend to think like that.

hey Brownbeauty/Tonya, I bet I can tell a few things about you two:

1. You both have at least one OOW child.
2. You've made bad choices in men.
3. You both have complexes about being dark skinned and grew up being bitter against and jealous of lighter skinned people.
4. You both fantasize about marrying a rich man so you don't have to work again.
5. Neither of you have a man right now.

If I'm wrong, I stand corrected but I've seen a million of you and you all tend to fall into that profile.

Well then you can't say what Diedra and Shaniqua and Sahniqua's kids should do. Either you're a black man concerned about hard working (and/or) “down to earth sistas” and their "five kids." Or Youre an 'individual' worried about nothing “but his own”…. In which case, you need to mind your muthafuckin' business.

Well well well! It was just a matter of time before we saw what you're all about and everybody now knows that you're just another ignorant harpy who resorts to name calling and gutter language when devoid of logic and common sense! I'm sorry taht taking care of your OOW kids is so hard but you made the choice to have them and it's YOUR responsibility to take care of them, not mine! Don't get mad at me because I made better choices with my life than you did! Grow up, go to school, expand your pitiful vocabulary, get a job, stop waiting on a sugar daddy, get a life and maybe then I'll have an ounce of respect for you! you can keep proving me right about you if you wish but don't think you're impressing anybody but yourself, Brownbeauty or that Kola Boof nut!

1. I don't know what the abbreviation for "OOW" means but I have no children
2. My first bad choice was conversing with you--so yeah you're right
3. I realized by the time I reached middle/high school black guys were colorstruck. Its obvious lightskin Blacks get preferential treatment. You seem to be totally insensitive to that and like to use it against me in the tired old "bitter and jealous" argument. Am I supposed to sweep this issue under the rug and act like favortism towards the lighter shades of African Americans don't exist at all?
4. LOL I fantasize about graduating from college next year and advancing in a better position at my current job
5. I'm looking---hope to be married by 25

Sigmaman3,

1. I don't believe you're married. You sound like a single black male
2. You have a hard time approaching or getting most Black women's attention
3. You lived at home well into your late twenties
4. You keep several jars of pee underneath your bed because you're too lazy to go to the bathroom when you wake up in the morning
5. You masturbate a lot to porn

I'll think of some more to come later...

[1. I don't know what the abbreviation for "OOW" means but I have no children]

Thank God! Any little bitty versions of you running around would be a disaster!

[2. My first bad choice was conversing with you--so yeah you're right]

Oh well!

[3. I realized by the time I reached middle/high school black guys were colorstruck. Its obvious lightskin Blacks get preferential treatment. You seem to be totally insensitive to that and like to use it against me in the tired old "bitter and jealous" argument.]

If the shoe fits, wear it!

[Am I supposed to sweep this issue under the rug and act like favortism towards the lighter shades of African Americans don't exist at all?]

No but stop bringing it up when it isn't an issue!

[4. LOL I fantasize about graduating from college next year and advancing in a better position at my current job]

Good. Maybe then, you won't need a sugar daddy that bad. I bet you'll still be obsessing over IR and skin color though.

[5. I'm looking---hope to be married by 25]

Unless you grow up and stop acting like a jealous insecure malcontent, that won't happen!

What you believe about my personal life really doesn't matter.

[2. You have a hard time approaching or getting most Black women's attention]

Not true. It's not true in real life and it's not true on this board where I'm obviously getting YOUR attention.

[3. You lived at home well into your late twenties]

Wrong again. You sure aren't collecting any cookies around here.

[4. You keep several jars of pee underneath your bed because you're too lazy to go to the bathroom when you wake up in the morning]

How long did it take you to think of that, half your life?

[5. You masturbate a lot to porn]

No not really but don't you keep a lot of that stuff next to your stash of batteries? Gotta have something to work with, especially with no man to give you the real deal, right? coll

"What you believe about my personal life really doesn't matter. "

What's up with the double standards? It's okay for YOU to do this:

"Not true. It's not true in real life and it's not true on this board where I'm obviously getting YOUR attention. "

You CANNOT be married. You have TOO much of an interest in what other Black single women desire in a mate. A married man has no business on an internet forum passionately debating with other single black women about their choices in men. And if you are married, then its probably quite an unfulfilling one.

"No not really but don't you keep a lot of that stuff next to your stash of batteries? Gotta have something to work with, especially with no man to give you the real deal, right? coll"

Just like that "alleged" wife of yours. LOL Yeah right
