ok, i just bought some music from itunes and i am super pissed because i can't put it on my new mp3 player. why can't i? you may ask because these files are downloaded as protected m4p files which can only play on an ipod or through itunes. i didn't notice this until my ipod fell into the sink while i was doing dishes. anyways i tried to get my hack on, there is a hymn code which is supposed to be able to turn m4p files into a mp3 or mp4 file... doesn't work with the itunes 6 version. so i am just letting all of you know in advance don't buy music from itunes unless u have an ipod. by the way this goes into the economy files...because i'm trying to save you guys the hastle of wasting your cashola. |

Duh!!! Typical MAN! Dropping the iPod into the sink while washing dishes. You know that a woman would never let such a thing occur, right? We would have put it into a zipper bag or something.

ok here is how to change over the files (to a mp3) for a pc ... if your using a mac with a seperate burning device such as toast you may have some problems, the hymn code will not allow you to transform m4p ot mp3 with version 6 of itunes... anyways i'm prolly the only person who needed to know all this mumbo jumbo in the first place... all this typing and i'm all out of skittles... oh well...hopefully it helps someone 
Solution 1: M4P->CD->MP3
It is the easiest way. To convert Itunes protected M4P to MP3 format, you should burn a CD from iTunes (using the ITunes CD burning option), and then use CD to MP3 Ripper to rip MP3 from CD.
1. Buy songs on iTunes
2. Go to File->New Playlist
3. Drap and Drop files you want to the playlist
4. Right-click playlist and select "Burn Playlist to Disc"
5. Rip CD to MP3.
Solution 2: M4P->MP4->MP3
1. Download m4p2mp4.zip and unzip m4p2mp4.exe to C:\
2. Move yoursong.m4p to C:\
3. Come to a command prompt (start -> run -> type: cmd -> press Enter)
4. Type: cd\ (press Enter)
5. Type: m4p2mp4.exe yoursong.m4p yoursong.mp4 (press Enter)
This will convert yoursong.m4p files to yoursong.mp4 format.
More simple, you type:
m4p2mp4.exe *.m4p (press Enter)
This will convert all M4P files in C:\ to MP4 format.
6. Close the DOS Window now, open Windows Explorer, you will find the new yoursong.mp4 file
7. Download Xilisoft Audio converter and convert MP4 files to MP3.
Solution 3: M4P->M4A->MP3
Without needing a CD-R(W), You can convert Itunes protected M4P to MP3 format.
1. Download HYMN (site1 site2) and install it to c:\hymn
2. Create the directory c:\hymn\music\
3. Open iTunes and drag your playlist or files to c:\hymn\music
4. At a command prompt (open a MS-DOS command prompt 'start->accessories->command prompt' ) go to c:\hymn\ and type:
hymn c:\hymn\music\yoursong.m4p c:\hymn\music\yoursong.m4a
This will convert yoursong.m4p files to yoursong.m4a format.
More simple, you type:
hymn c:\hymn\music\*.m4p
This will convert all M4P files in c:\hymn\music to M4A format.
5. Download Xilisoft Audio converter and convert M4A files to MP3.
Solution 4: Convert M4P to MP3 directly
Tunebite can record M4P music when you play it and convert to MP3, WMA or OGG. More details>>

Hey, Doberman23. Here's what I need help with. I am having all sorts of problems with my mini. I am guessing Apple is no longer providing software support since they do not make these any more. I have followed all the directions on the apple/ipod official sites, but still have battery-like problems within a day or two. (I have ruled out that it is actually a battery problem.)
Any ideas? I love my iPod and love iTunes but I am p-o'ed about these difficulties. I am not the demographic that rushes out and buys a new mp3 player every year--I would expect that this one (less than 2 years old, bought new) should still work without problems. |

thanks cynique! and i'm usually only good on fridays (cept when it rains for some reason)
yvettep ... chances are it could be battery related that's what happened to the first generation with the ipods and apple had the nerves to charge so much for the batteries customers where better off buying a new mp3 player. your warranty has unfortunatly run out unless you had it extended upon your initial purchase...if that's the case then tell them they need to refurbish that badboy or give you a new one. what exactly is it doing anyways? playing for short stinits then diesing or is it not booting up at all? |

The former. And this, even when I know for certain that the thing is fully charged. A techie friend told me it is likely a software problem. But I have fully restored the iPod and made sure I have the newest version of iTunes, and I still eventually have the same problem. Then another friend told me that the "updates" offered by Apple are probably not doing anything new for minis, since these models are discontinued.
For now, the unit works fine with external power sources, so I can listen at my workstation by having it plugged in, I can listen in my car w/my fm receiver adapter, and I can listen on my little speaker unit. But what I can't do is be "portable" for long periods of time. (Or, actually for longer than the approximately 15 minutes it takes me to walk between my office and parking lot.) Kinda defeats the whole purpose of an mp3 player.
Somewhere (iPod lounge?) someone introduced me to the term "vendor lock" where (if I understand correctly) a company will purposefully stop providing support for a model in order to get folks to buy newer models. I do not know if that is what is happening with the minis or not. But whatever is happening, I am quite ticked off about it and with the lack of help I have gotten from the Apple store "genius bar," website, etc.
And the kicker? Before the problems began I had already downloaded music from the iTunes store, as well as digitized much of my cd collection into my iTunes library. I still think the music store is the best of all the ones I have tried (and I have tried about 4 others), but these problems with the player have soured me.

I've found that the simplest way is your solution #1, burn a CD.
Now, I'm more interested in finding a quick way to convert movies & videos to a format that iPod video can read.
We've got Videora, but it takes too friggin' long |

if i'm not mistaken quicktime professional will take care of the video issue. but don't qoute me on that.
as far as for you yvette ... it really sounds like a hardware issue, meaning you need a new battery...meaning you need to holla at ebay and hope you can get one on there ...sorry. |
