That's funny. Her features are quite similar to those of Gabrielle Union. The major difference between the two, face wise, is that one’s blue-black and one’s brown. I will agree in this sense, however. None of the African American women in the media are any competition for their white counterparts, not one. Tonya, Gabrielle Union is not even mixed. How is she an example of White supremacy? (Is that what you're saying?) G. Union is one of the very few fair & accurate representations in the media of typically what a pretty/beautiful Black woman resembles. Kerry Washington is another one. The only similaritiy between Alek Wek, and G. Union is that they both share a round/ oval face. Their features like eyes, nose, mouth, forehead, etc are nothing alike. Alek Wek has a face the pertrudes outwards, while G. Union has a pieface that is much more flat and conventional. You guys make me want to pull out some Alek Wek Photos and photoshop them so that you can see that she indeed does look like every other black person simply with darker skin.     I have to admit it took me years to get used to her looks, but I realized that's because I'm living in America and not exposed to many of the ancestors images that we come from. Funny how we say the things about Africans that white people used to say about us. Alek is clearly the original look of one of our ancestors. our people in the west are NOT a "watered-down" version of anything. we look the way we look because these are the physical characteristics we have as a people. our people NEVER looked like alek wek. its such an outright lie to say that the black-americans, west indians, black brazillians etc, used to look like the southern sudanese. we are a nation with distinct racial features. and this is NOT because of "racial-admixture". also the black man in america, the west indies, south america, etc are the earth's original people ALL other nations or races (including the southern sudanese) come from us. we are the original man. the southern sudanese are straight up ugly. the true cushites (ethiopian, somalian, and eritrean) atleast they have nice physical features. the southern sudanese (dinka tribe, etc) have got to be some of the ugliest people on the planet. can our people (black american, west indians, black people in south and central america) maybe take some pride in themselves and in their nation. it does a great disservice to our children and it disrespects our ancestors to give the credit for who we are to dark nations who are no part of us. we are the first people, we are the beautiful, special people. can we begin to give ourselves credit for something? or do we just want to follow around nations that are clearly inferior than we are (southern sudanese, nigerians, ethiopians, etc)? | ||

brownbeauty, im not able to post pics of the southern sudanese because my pc is not working im on a public pc. if you do a search for "dinka tribe" on google, im sure you can get photos of the southern sudanese. alek wek is a southern sudanese (a dinka, most likely). the southern sudanese are different from us the same way the aboriginals of australia are different from us. on the planet earth there are many, many different races or nations that have dark skin and the same texture of hair. in the land called "africa", there are different races that have dark skin. our people (black americans, west indians, black brazillians, black columbians, the people who were brought to the new world as slaves and were scattered throughout north, south, central america, and the west indies) are unlike any other nation on the planet. we are a distinct, special nation. all the other nations on the planet (including the nations in africa)understand that we are the zenith of humanity. there is no other nation on earth that has done as much, is as inventive, as beautiful, or is as strong as we are. there has been an organized effort on the part of the other nations on the planet to cover up and erase our true identity. they have also attempted to erase all of our history, inventions, and accomplishments, by attributing them to other nations or races. when ever you see an african walking around in america, our people immediately recognize that this person (the african) is of a different race or nation. we know this when we see them (the african, we know in our hearts these are not our people. the dark races in africa (along with the arabs) sold our nation (for musket guns and wine) to the white man as slaves. the nations in african understand that we are not a part of them (that we are a distinct nation). this is why you have never in your life heard the nations or governments in africa speak up for our people who were scattered throughout the americas during the slave trade. the african nations have many, many seats in the united nations. have they ever said,"let my brothers come home"? of couse not. because they know we are not their people. whae marcus garvey wanted to take our people back to africa on the "blackstar line". the nigerians said they would not accept the ships if they came into port in nigeria. im only scrathching the surface. this goes very, very deep. we as a people don't have to look toward the dark races in africa for who we are. we just have to look in the mirror. our people have a physical glow. all the nations on earth want to be just like us. more info coming! brownbeauty, thanks for asking | ||

Well let me give you my take on it. Gabrielle Union is the prettiest woman in the world to me. I also think that Alek Wek is a beautiful woman as well. Alek Wek is not a West African woman. However, Gabrielle is a watered down version of a West African woman. Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder. However, I think that Alek Wek is much prettier to me than Vanessa Williams who looks like a watered down version of a white woman. | ||

It seems that sometimes, we as blacks are so self absorbed in our doctrines of what is beautiful and acceptable, that someone outside our race has to point out obvious beauty to us -that we've over looked. Maybe that's why my black daughter only dates white guys and her white roomate only dates black guys. Hi Everyone I stumbled across this thread while surfing for some information on Alek Wek. I must admit that I am SHOCKED at some of the stuff being said here. I don't care whether you're light brown or blue black or mixed or whatever....All I know is that if people were being killed or stoned for being black, you would go down with me Lil_ze. History testifies to this fact. How many relatives can you trace back from your own family tree who were stoned, linched and brutally killed for being black. Did they distinguish and spare the lives of the ones who had a glow to their skin. Or did they all die just like millions of Sudanese men, women and children have died to date. Do you go to a better heaven or a better hell because you have a glow to your skin or becuase you are lighter than me? don't you see that this is a plan to destroy a people? I am a Sudanese woman myself and apart from being insulted at some of the comments on this board, I am also so deeply saddened at the whole discussion. As far as I can see this is not really about beauty but about identity. Whether watered down or blue black, we as black people have lost our IDENTITY and it is killing us as a people. The irony of it is that this was the exact plan of slavery and to this day I still maintain that slavary was one of the most successful ventures ever undertaken by man. You know why? Becuase even after all these years the objectives of the slavemasters are still being met and they are as follows: Get them to hate one another (dark skinned against light-skinned, tall against short, fat against thin) and pretend to be their friend, the one who solves their problems. When is this madness going to stop? When are we going to keep making the white man king in out lives? When are we goig to see that we are just people who have a right to live whether we're beutiful or not? Don't you see that you were meant to self distruct?
