What makes Halle Berry prettier than other Bi-racial actresses such as Thandie Newton, or Michael Michelle?

What makes her prettier than any other all Black actresses? That's the million dollar question.

She gets compared to every Black woman in Hollywood. She's like the measure of beauty or something.

Michael Michelle is not that pretty. She's the run of the mill commercial looking lightskin woman endorsing a new cleansing bar during daytime soap hours.

Same for Thandie Newton.

Halle Berry gets more exposure. She made the "right" moves. Same thing with Vanessa Williams. All of these women are attractive, but probably wouldn't be where they are without enhancements of some sort.

I have a question: why is there such a bias against light-skinned women (and to a much lesser extent, men) on this forum? It doesn't balance things out. It just serves to further divide black people...

Why the haterade argument? Am I just supposed sit back, and just enjoy the preferential treatment over lightskin women and say nothing?---Brownbeauty June 01, 2006 - 12:57 am--Overated Celebrity thread.

The Significance of Color Remains: A Study of Life Chances, Mate Selection, and Ethnic Consciousness among Black Americans
Michael Hughes, Bradley R. Hertel

Social Forces, Vol. 68, No. 4 (Jun., 1990) , pp. 1105-1120
View Article Abstract
Enlarge Page Size

Abstract
Using data from the National Survey of Black Americans, a national probability sample of black adults interviewed in 1980 (N=2,107), we find that blacks with lighter skin have higher socioeconomic status, have spouses higher in socioeconomic status, and have lower black consciousness than those with dark skin. Only the correlations of skin color with black consciousness variables are eliminated when we control for respondent's age, gender, and current and background socioeconomic status. We also find the impact of skin color on socioeconomic status among black Americans to be as great as the impact of race (black-white) on socioeconomic status in American society. We detect little evidence that the association between skin color and socioeconomic status changed during the 30-year period between 1950 and 1980. The association between skin color and life chances appears to be an aspect of black life in America that persists in spite of many social, political, and cultural changes that have affected black Americans in the present century.

^^^^So because society favors them, it's okay to hate THEM? Is it better to hate them rather than the system that has placed them above darker skinned Black people, and messed both groups up psychologically? Do you think hating light skinned Blacks makes the situation for dark skinned Blacks better?

@ Fortified - Skin color has always been a catalyst to divide black people since we came in contact with Europeans.

I think there's a much stronger demand for more "Eurocentric" looking black women in Hollywood. Meaning, the lighter-skinned, weaved-up, fried and died, sistas get more play.

I think Hollywood and any Eurocentric society period cannot appreciate a beautiful, dark-skinned black woman. As bruthas, we should be the opposition to this society that tries it's damnest to damage they psyche of our darker-skinned sistas...

..and sistas... please STOP with the GADDAMN WEAVES!!!

I hate weaves! Everybody knows that a'int your hair! The best beauty is NATURAL beauty.

^^^^^I understand, and I strongly agree. But do you see the difference between hating the system versus hating light-skinned women themselves? They didn't ask to be here.

You say the best beauty is natural beauty, yet I don't see it being embraced by BOTH black men and black women.

^ I think they dislike the fact that lighter-skinned women get preferential treatment, not necessarily that hate light-skinned women. That's what I got from it, but then again, I've only been around for a week, so I haven't read the other threads you referred to.

As for you second paragraph, that's an entire thread in and of itself. That discussion would inevitably end up being a discussion on self-hate and other social/societal factors that contribute to black people being ashamed and/or not appreciating their natural beauty.

Nobody hates anybody. I think mine were fair questions. What I don't think is fair is what you are implying because the black man is just as much to blame. He's just as guilty of selective placement as anyone else. And let's not act like this selected group is being forced above... like they frown at thought of benefiting from the sickness of a "messed up" race. No, I don't think your implications are fair at all. There's enough blame to go around.

But who is behind this mentality? There are members in both groups (light and dark) who have the mentality that lighter is better. You can hand out the blame as much as you want, but who and what is behind that ideology? It's all over the world: India, China, the Caribbean, Africa, South America. Post-colonialism has done a number on us psychologically. We need to get to the root of the problem...

Go to any Black club, and see how many Black men crowd around the highest yellow, and the mixed race girls.

The yellow women walk through the club with so much arrogance and conceit, like they KNOW Black men are gonna gravitate towards them before it even happens.

And if you're darkskin, you better have a huge, and I mean HUGE ass to warrant any kind of attention a la Buffy the Body. If not, then you're just another dark chimp.

I had an old friend who was lightskin, dyed her hair blonde, so I know firsthand the type of mentality some of these high yellow women have. She used to make me feel bad for being dark.

It calls for IMMEDIATE attention.

And when I say there's enough blame to go around, that includes dark and light skinned people. But the problem seems to be that light skinned people are hell-bent on putting up roadblocks to any meaningful discussions. As a consequence the issues written about in the study will never be addressed and your (and my) desire to balance things out will never come to fruition.

Kenology, we halfway acknowledge that it exists which prolongs the notion that equality among blacks is inconsequential, something to be put on the back burner or remain acceptable, which ain’t gonna happen. We have to treat colorism as urgently as we do racism, realizing that it is as detrimental to one’s possibilities as any other form of racism. There is no way a plan can develop without taking this into account.

Kenology:

I don't think I want to know the answer to that one.

I dont think she had plastic surgery. She has just lost the baby fat in her face in the second picture.

Attractive, smart, kind woman, just not worthy of all the hoopla about her looks. I just don't see it.

T - Sorry but we need some pix every now and then.

Z - She's got a pointy nose. She didn't get that from the loss of baby fat. And I think she had a boob job too - but since I wasn't there, I can't swear to it.

Why wouldn't a celeb living in such a image-conscious business NOT have surgery? Plastic surgery to them is like a quick trip to the gyno for us.

She DEFINTELY had a nose job. Many ppl have reported her having that done.

Well, I find it highly suspicious that she perfectly lost babyfat in the cheekbone area, and no where else. I think she had a little facial contouring done to her face if you ask me.

Has anyone seen her in Boomerang?? She was very "cute", in a girl-next-door kinda way.

In the before pic, she looks like a friendly news reporter lady.

In the after pic she looks very chic, sophisticated, and Hollywood glam.

I've never witnessed a Black woman get as much praise for her looks than Halle Berry. She is like the hallmark of Black beauty.

LOL You so wrong Mzuri!!

I SEE the difference.

For the longest, I was wondering WHY she looked so different, so much better. And she started to get more exposure with the change.

Because in Boomerang, she was very "cute", "adorable", in a carmel girl-next-door kinda of way. The same in "Strictly Business". With her cute little short muffin hairdo.

The REAL Halle doesn't look mixed at all. Because I always thought she looked "white" dipped in tan, but that's the plastic surgery.

She had a GREAT surgeon.

You can tell the surgery gave her more confidence.

In old photos, you can see that she wasn't "sure" of herself.

I don't know. I think she lacks self-confidence still. That's why she's always going from one relationship to the next, bouncin from man to man. The woman can't even stand to be alone. And that's sad.

Her nose appears different and a little thinner because there is less fat around it, in her cheek area. Also in the younger pics of her she looks a lot paler with lighter colored make up, this also adds to the difference in appearance. I don't think its plastic surgery.

Wow. She looks even MORE African in the high school picture.

And all this time, I really thought she looked half white. I guess she could easily achieve that look since her mother is Cacausion.

Zuriburi,

How can losing weight make that much of a difference to one's nose?

Of all the places to lose weight, she lucked upon the nose region which ended up looking thinner, pointier, and more refined. Not only that, but the weight loss made her cheekbones more contoured in perfect dimension. Suure.

We always hear Halle is perfect physically, but damn no one has that much luck in the world.

She defintely had plastic surgery. Why?

1. Actresses are required to look perfect
2. Hollywood pressures actresses to look perfect
3. She had the money, and the connections

Makes perfect sense.

she was like 22 in that picture and she is now thirty something ... who the phuck looks exactly the same as they did when they where 22 when there 35 years old? second halle as well as ALL WOMEN YOU SEE IN MAGAZINES get's the photoshop treatment. some just get it alot more than others ... you'll never know unless you work for that magazine you see those pictures in because they have contracts that you have to sign stating that you can't show before and after pics. i used to think lark vorhees was the hotest thing next to the sun... i saw her in real life ... u could see the cake-up all over her mug, she was still cute but not what i expected... sorta like when you see food on the menu (that's photoshoped too or there are other tricks to the trade to make that look good too)

as far as halle being the "it girl for black women" well it's sort of like when they say nicole kidman was one one of people's most beutiful women... nicole kidman is not even half way cute, but she was just miss popular at a certain time same thing with angelina jolee, or demi moore, don't worry all you halle haters, she will one day not show up in the magazines anymore or barely be a whisper, then you'll have someone else to hate wether they are dark or light... chances are you may have to settle for a puerto rican if ya'll can't help one another.

So as you get older your nose becomes thinner, pointy, and more refined without the help of a surgeons surgical knife?

YOU would be the type to defend this Mulatto.

Everyone thinks she is gorgeous
yet nothing on Halle is authentic.

Dobey - There's a major difference between the gradual transformation that happens when one ages naturally, and the drastic change of having several nose and face jobs. I have the same nose as I did when I was little, obviously it grew with the rest of my face, but it's the same darn nose. It's not a perfect nose, but it's MY nose. It's perfect in the sense that God made it and it functions!

And Ms. Halle, whom everyone assumed was such a naturally beautiful beauty, is really an ugly duckling in disguise. Not saying she was ooogly before she had her face done, but she wasn't a looker. So she didn't even win that beauty pageant as her real self. She's been a phoney all along. Isn't this what we refer to as a sell-out? And the sad thing about all of this is that the woman still isn't happy with herself.

This pic is courtesy of Fortified.

Am I wrong or did she have a nose job before she did Boomerang and Strictly Business???

Mzuri:
"but she wasn't a looker."

Moonsigns:
Sure she was. Regardless if she has a round, button nose or a thin nose, the one thing Halle has always had going for her is that, her face is perfectly symmetrical. And science has proved that those who have symmetrical faces are considered, even by infants, to be more attractive than those who don't. And while I'm not a huge advocate of plastic surgery, I think that in this case, the surgery didn't make her look "fake" or so drastically different that she wasn't recognizable. She isn't the most beautiful woman I've ever seen, and sometimes I think her beauty is over-rated, but she surely is a very attractive and sensous woman. Her body is in great shape, too.

Now, she may not be happy with herself, however, I appreciate her brutal honesty regarding her self-esteem. In that respect, I think she has courage that most women don't.

She was a looker in the B&W image above? I don't see it. As for symmetry, no she doesn't have that either. If you'll look closely at a couple of the pix above, you'll see that her eyes are uneven. And yes, she's free to have all the surgeries that she chooses - my point is that she has been fakin the funk. She's not a natural.

"I don't see it."

Moonsigns:
Something to consider--she was a chubby-cheeked teenager in that photo, too. Nothing like the starlet we see now as a grown woman. Nonetheless, technically, you have a point that she is not a "natural" beauty. However, most of Hollywood isn't, either. She's no exception. And with surgery or no surgery, in my opinion, she is still attractive.

And I don't think her eyes are uneven. I think it's just one photo that looks a wee bit funny. Her eyes look symmetrical in all the rest.

Dobey - This is a discussion forum. We discuss things. Gossip. Talk trash. Talk trash about each other and other people. It's fun. Don't take this stuff so personal. And no - nobody here really gives a care about Halle one way or the other.

Moonie - I'm a littler older than you and back in the olden days actresses were natural. Lena Horne, Dorothy Dandridge, Raquel Welch, Sophia Loren, Marlene Dietrich, Lana Turner, Marilyn M., and the others. A little bit of make-up but no nose jobs, boob jobs, bonded teeth, colored contacts, a$$ implants (LOL). None of that. Why can't things be the way they were before?

I want a new policy. If your a$$, nose, face, boobs, or any other pertinent part of you is fake in HoWood, you can't compete in any beauty pageants, you can't be in any movies, and you ain't gettin paid.

Mzuri,

Though I am younger than you, I also appreciate the natural beauty of all the women you mentioned. And I tend to think that women who are natural, in general, are far more attractive and appealing than women who over-accessorize by wearing tasteless clothes, too much make-up/fake nails, over-process/over-style their hair, and abuse cosmetic surgery. However, I think too many people nowadays, both male and female, are in love with the idea of illusion and fantasy, are gross consumers, and don't value a healthy lifestyle. And I don't think any of this will change unless women--yes women--demand it by how we choose to live as well as how we raise our daughters.

Just my take.

I honestly don't see a difference between her nose in the high school pic and the one during the "Strictly Business" phase. We all have our awkward phases. I looked less than stellar in my teens (but I sure as hell wouldn't be caught dead in shirt like that! LOL!).
Hollywood nowadays is based strictly on image over talent. Not only black actresses are feeling the pressure to "adjust" their looks but white actresses as well--more so than the black ones. The black starlets of yesteryear felt the pressure to straighten their hair, add pieces and wear loads of make-up that would dilute their features. It's only because of the advances in technology that these stars are able to make permanent changes.
Halle admits to self-esteem issues and issues with men, so I don't really think she is "phony" to that extent. However, she was willing to do what other black actresses weren't willing to do to reach the level of stardom she has...lack of principles, maybe????

I am a little older than mzuri and many of those famous actresses she named most surely did have work done with the possible exception of Sophia Loren. Maybe she didn't have a boob job, but Dorothy Dandrige was not buxom and needed padded bras. Even Great Garbo who was considered a classic beauty had her face re-configured by her svengali-like manager when she was just starting out. Lena Horne did have her teeth bonded, Marilyn Monroe had a nose job in the beginning of her career. Lana Turner in an effort to perfect her eyebrows had them shaved and they never grew back and from then on she had to have her brows either pasted on or penciled in. And of course neither she nor Marilyn were naural blondes. In her later years Marlena Detrich had body work done. One thing Halle Berry does seem to have a natural facility for is attracting bashers. I'm with you, Moonie. Halle's "golden triangle" is in tact. Her face is not perfect but it is naturally appealing, with or without a nose job.

lisa bonet, when she was younger was one of the most beautiful women i have EVER seen. halle berry is just ok, nothing special. lisa bonet was simply amazing looking, bi-racial, black, white, whatever. she was just stunningly good looking. i also think a young lonette mcgee (sp)from the movie "sparkle" was very beautiful also. halle berry OVERRATED in everyway.

I think the reason why Berry's beauty is appealing to many is that her look is Black but not (for White foks, especially) too Black. Thus, both Black and White foks can see some of themselves (and for guys, that would include their penises) in her.

She don't have that strange Lonette McKee thing going on where-by you figures she's a half a chromosome away from just flatout being White.

the woman is good looking, bottom line, point blank, nuff said! what other woman do you see everyone else talking about every 10th posts on here..besides maybe oprah? you know somethin' funny when grace jones was getting her props you know who was dissing her? other black women, when naomi campbell gets her props you know who talks shit about her? other black women. my girl came from the motherland and you know who made fun of her and had her feeling bad about herself? the black girls she went to school with. i remember this super dark chick i went to school with... she was really nice and had the prettiest smile when i started talking to her, other sistas talked about her so bad it made me embarassed to holla at her. so zuburi who's the drone then... this ain't an isolated thing, this just isn't in michigan that black women talk shit about one another. so if it's not halle it would be someone else dark or light that sistas will talk shit about. actually that's just how women are white, black, brown, yellow, etc ...not all.. but most.

the question: What makes Halle Berry prettier than other Bi-racial actresses such as Thandie Newton, or Michael Michelle? there is nothing in particular serenasailor, they are all attractive women, chances are some people think that the other ones that you mentioned are more attractive than halle is..it's a matter of taste. If by your question do you mean why is she more popular than the other two? Luck i guess, i just figured halle recieved the token-crown from vanessa williams as that covergirl/actress... which will be taken over by eva menedez.

Although I think Halle Berry has a nicer body, I find Thandie Newton to be at least as pretty Halle and decidedly SEXIER than Halle.

Michael Michelle looks too much like a White woman in "blackface" for my tastes.

Tonya:

Dobes, I hate to say it but this part of your post is 100% true. Dark-skinned females are WAY MORE judgmental about their looks than ANY other group judging dark-skinned women. I have never seen anything like it. They sneer as they pass each other in public. They denigrate one another‘s, hair, features, demeanor, anything you can think of, just awful. They never, ever compliment each other‘s beauty, no matter the occasion: weddings, proms, it doesn't matter. And for some reason, they don't seem to take compliments well either. I don't know what it is but the level of hatred between dark-skinned females regarding their looks is unprecedented, not even black, black men hate them more, based on what I've seen. I hate to say it but it is completely true.

Halle is talented. In Monster's Ball she did everything but 'die' to win that Oscar. She's gotten better looking over the years, because that is what Hollywood does with talented women, not to mention airbrushing their photos, and using special lenses for shots on screen. I do think Hollywood accepted her more readily, because she's half white. I know I've accepted her more readily, because she's half black. From the looks of things, we are going to be seeing a lot more of Eva Mendez with the brothers. Apparently, Hollywood has decided brothers with Hispanics is an acceptable pairing which is a much bigger issue than whether Halle started out pretty. We all know money talks loud all up in the beauty department.

Dark skin women (especially those with flat butts), please listen up... You are blessed to NOT be as "desirable" to black men as light skinned, mixed race women... The statistics are in... You probably are less likely to contract sexually transmitted diseases like life-threating HIV and cancer-causing HPV, etc from these self-hating black men who PREFER to infect these poor mixed women. Invest in your rare beauty and concentrate on exploring your options... Why do you continue to seek validation from these vermin?

Regarding Halle Berry. Will you please leave her alone? If you knew what REALLY goes on in Hollywood, you'd actually feel sorry for her. Are you aware that this woman goes out of her way to embrace the minute traces of African DNA in her blood stream? She's not a fraud, she is a business woman, successful in this hellish Hollywood industry.
