im a big, big movie fan. i just finished watching the movie "roll bounce", starring "bow wow". i want to applaud this movie. there really needs to be more films like this, that show life as black people really live it. i felt this movie was a good representation of our people. no there were no crack dealers, no armed robbery, no women and men fighting, calling each other every dirty name they could think of. i saw people living lives that the majority of black people actually live. no, life is not a picnic, but i really don't think that the lives of black people are accurately portrayed in the majority of films as they really are. the films that actually show our people living and functioning as any other people ar few and far between. like the rapper jadakiss said," why halle have to let a white man pop her for her to get an oscar, why denzel have to play it crooked, before he took it? this rap is sad but true. even denzel(washington) has commented, even though he is one of the best and most respected actors (black, white or whatever) he has yet to be offered a role in a love story (except "mo betta blues") which was done by a black director. there really needs to be more films made that portray black people as they are, not as we are viewed by the greater society. terrance howard, who was nominated for an oscar, was nominated for him playing a pimp. i understand actors play roles. but it seems like most black actors are recognized for playing pimps, or crooked cops or sexual play things. i personally thought that the role terrance howard played in "hustle and flo'" was below him and below his capability as an actor. every year we see a ton of "love stories", starring white men and white women. but the love stories about black men and women seem to be few and far between. you mean to tell me denzel couldn't star in a serious love story with gabrielle union? or any of our other great actor and actresses? but denzel is quickly cast as a crooked cop, and given an award for playing a crooked role. im not saying denzel didn't deserve his oscar, but he and all of our actors ans actresses are capable of so much more. its almost denying our humanity. we are onlt capable of playing sterotypical roles. i like some of the movies that take place in "the hood", because that is a part of life that exists for some of our people. but you mean to tell me that we (black people) don't have love stories, that we don't live lives where nothing special (drive by's, drug busts, domestic violence) happens, and we just live lives, like any other group of people? i am happy to see movies like, "roll bounce", that show us as we are. not as the world wants us to be, or thinks we are.
