I was wondering about something you said. You said that authentic Africans should have two distinct features. One is brown skin and kinky(nappy) hair which you refer to as a crown.

Now can those features be interchangable? Such as a person can have kinky hair but have light skin(for instant Tisha Campbell, Redd Foxx, Tony Morrison, Beyonce), and can they have dark-skin, and African features, but with long straight hair like (Ananda Lewis, and "Chili" from the group T.L.C?

Or should they have both to be truly black? Brown skin and kinky hair.

You think Chilli has African features?

I was watching the movie 'Brothers' the other day, where Gabrielle Union and Tatiana Ali played side by side--they looked exactly alike, except for Tatiana had straighter hair

i think its interesting that OUR people (THOSE descendants of the people who were brought to the "new world" in chains), feel the need to ask a stranger, a foriegner their opinion on anything. this stranger and her people, didn't endure enslavement, were not raped, didn't serve over 450 years of slavery. this stranger and her people had no part of OUR history. so why OUR people would feel a need to ask this stranger anything is beyond me. this stranger is no authority on anything. what this stranger has to say regarding OUR people has NO meaning. asking this stranger about how she defines tisha campbell, redd foxx, and beyonce, is like asking an east indian how they define OUR people. this stranger should give her opinion about the "african" and "arabs", who are her people. how this stranger defines OUR people has no meaning, because this stranger has no business or right trying to define OUR people. we have the freedom to do what we want, but i don't see how any of OUR people could even think of asking this stranger her opinion about anything that has to do with OUR people. she is not one of us. so she has no say in matters that involve us.

And you really don't share the same history as an American Black Lil_ze if you want to get technical about it. Spanish slavery was much different than American slavery. The Cubans set their slaves free in 1889. But after that the black Cubans did not suffer the same humiliation, and discrimination that Black Americans did.

Serena,

I've OFTEN noted that Toni Morrison and Redd Foxx look like pure Zulus. I don't know how you've missed my MANY threads saying so.

Obviously, with all that kinky hair and thick African features, "most" (not all) Africans would see them as Authentic Blacks provided they spoke their tribe's language and had lineage (names).

Ananda Lewis and Chili, however, would never be considered "Authentic Blacks"... by African people. Both are too mixed to be black. And not even Ethiopians who are that mixed-looking are considered fully black---when Ethiopians look like Ananda or Chili (no hair, no Afro features), they are called "ethnic" Ethiopian. Which means that they are ALL Ethiopian, but with mixed blood.

These are general AFRICAN standards---not American slave plantation standards. And Americans need to take into account how VERY BLACK the people of Africa are and use common sense to understand why someone who doesn't look all that mixed to you (Chili)...looks EXTREMELY mixed to African people.

I hope that answers your question, because I won't be back to this thread.

Firstly, you need to understand that it is seriously flawed to differentiate so-called authentic Africans by skin tone and hair. The fundamental place to start is by understanding there are two broad feature differences that constitute the African physical identity: Bantu features (south of the Sahara) and Abyssinian features (north of the Sahara). Drilling down, there are further clear differences between East & West Africa and then between over 1,000 distinct tribes. Africa is the most diverse place on earth.

Don't look to one African individual to educate you about Africa. Google, do some research, absorb, challenge your own perceptions, and best of all, travel Afrca.

- An African, born and bred.
