Word in Hollywood is, Terrence Howard is considering the role of late music icon Rick James. Howard's proved he's got the chops, with an Oscar nom for Best Actor this year. Can you see him playing Rick James? Would you like to see this biopic happen?

No! And I don't need to see a movie about Rick James. Neither does anybody. Let's see - he was a musician, he wore crazy costumes, he had lots of women, and he got high. He got arrested. A lot. He went to prison. He got out. And he did it all over again. And then he died at a relatively early age - from getting high. What's so interesting about it? I like his music and all but some things are better left alone. |

Now...I seem to remember an early album cover of RJ's...back in high school me and my girlfriends would look at it and try to determine whether it was "real, or balled up socks." I'd have to look more closely at Mr. H to see if he'd be able to pass in that respect! LOL |

Are there no other facets of black life that could be explored in media and films than this? Miles Davis was a drug addict and woman beater. A pimp. The pimp song just won the Oscar. Rick James had no redeeming values. Just the kind of black men they like to make one movie after the other about. What about the black man who invented brain surgery? Is there any talk of doing his story, Jackie?

Good points, and you know many movies like this have been made but failed to make it to the big screen. Until, black people with money, i.e, atheletes invest and build black theatres we aren't going to see them, unless we go to a black film festival. And for me, if I make a block buster movie, I'm going to use the revenue for ulterior motives. This is what sells. I know how to play the game. And in Hollywood, you have the play the game. Face it, people go to the movies to be entertained. Brain Surgery as a block buster movie ?? Boring. I'd buy it though if it was a documentary on DVD. |

White men star in very exciting movies about brain surgeons, chemists all the time. What was "A Beautiful Mind"? How about "Rain Man"? These were blockbusters with good parts for white men. I see nothing but movies with white men and white women who are really great role models. The movies are big hits too.

Enchanted, excellent points. I was brainstorming about the "based on real people" dramas of Black folk and mostly could think of only entertainers, coaches, and atheletes. There have been a few exceptions (e.g., teacher, civil rights leaders), but by and large the depictions have been limiting.
The issue w/movies featuring Black leads is always going to be balance: Yes there are the "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure"s--but they are more than balanced out by the "Beautiful Mind"s.
What will balance the "Soul Plane"s in depicting Black folk?
I do not pretend to know a whole lot about the entertainment industry. But it does seem to me that there are enough Black people w/wnough power in the industry to make some inroads--even if it means joining together to collaborate in order to increase their power.
And I know the excuse "Black people won't go to those movies." ("Those"=dramas, art films, independent films, whatever.) Sure we need to work on supporting films that are out of the ordinary, but you can't tell me that that is the sole factor in what gets green lit: There are many, many flops each year--most of them featuring White actors/themes--and that does not stop H'wood from continuing to produce films starring Whites... |

Although his lifestyle was full of excess, I think Rick James was considered a trend setter and a pioneer in his particular genre of funk rock music. If he hasn't already been inducted into the Rock And Roll hall of fame, I sure this honor will be posthumously bestowed on him. And, yea, I can see Terrance Howard in the role. |

Why do we always see things in black and white?? We've got white people playing good role models--shouldn't that be good enough!?! Cant we just appreciate what we have? Why play the race card ALL. THE. TIME?? Why not focus on developing a colorblind society? Maybe if you guys would look through race, you'd all see the bigger picture. Focusing on race just causes confusion and a whole lot of negativity which none of us need in our lives--we've been too negative for way too long. Aren't there other things we could be focusing our time on???--GLOBAL WARMING!?!?!? I mean, Jeez Loweez (!!) must we always think racial color lines?? |
