Former THE HILLTOP HUSTLERS rapper CHRISTOPHER 'COOL C' RONEY will face death by lethal injection this year (06), after his execution warrant was signed (11JAN06).

Roney, 36, was found guilty in October 1996 of the first-degree murder of a Philadelphia police officer during a failed bank heist.

While his accomplice and rap sidekick WARREN 'STEADY B' McGLONE was sentenced to life imprisonment, Roney received a death sentence for pulling the trigger.

The GLAMOROUS LIFE hitmaker is currently behind bars at Pennsylvania's State Correctional Institution at Greene.

Pennsylvania Governor ED RENDELL agreed that Roney's execution will go ahead on 9 March (06), reports Allhiphop.com

I'm telling you, knocking off a cop is certainly a one-way ticket to oblivion. Off topic here, because this seems a slightly relevant thread to put this on; 40 years ago, the defense minister of the Chicago Chapter of the Black Panther party was gunned down in his bed during a police raid. Tests later showed that the cops fired over a hundred bullets and the Panthers only managed to get off one shot. Now, the son of Fred Hampton, who was one of the victims, is asking that the block on the street where this masssacre occurred be named in honor of his father because although Hampton was a militant revolutionary, his rage was fueled by the extreme police brutality practiced against young black men; back then the Panthers also organized a few positive community programs to keep young kids off the street. To make a long story short, Chicago's Police Union is adamantly blocking this move because 2 policemen were previously killed in a shoot-out with the Panthers, and the lives of people trying to kill them are apparently more valuable than the lives of the young black men trying to avoid being killed. Just a little bit of historical trivia for ya, Doberman, since you seem to have a broad spectrum of interest.

those where some rough times for blacks I am so glad I didn't grow up during that era. I do not have enough info about the story you told to really give a better response, but if i where a cop i would block that move too ... i guess since my family is loaded with cops and agents, i have different feelings about people who try to kill their way out of situations that they shouldn't have gotten in. (in these times)

One of the dilemmas of being black. Out there in the street, it's hard to tell the good guys from the bad guys.

Philadelphia Rapper Cool C Granted Temporary Stay Of Execution
By Nolan Strong
Date: 2/4/2006 2:30 pm

Condemned rapper Christopher "Cool C" Roney was granted a stay of execution by a Philadelphia, Pennsylvania judge on Wednesday (Feb. 1).

The rapper was scheduled to die on Mar. 9 for the 1996 murder of police officer Lauretha Vaird.

When Vaird, 43, responded to a silent alarm at a PNC Bank branch in Philadelphia, she was shot in the chest as she entered the bank, according to reports. She was not wearing a bulletproof vest that day.

Cool C, 36, along with rapper Warren "Steady B." McGlone and Mark Canty were convicted of first-degree murder for their role in killing Vaird, a nine-year veteran who was Philadelphia's first female officer ever killed in the line of duty.

In Oct. 1996, McGlone and Mark Canty were sentenced to life in prison, while Cool C was sentenced to die by lethal injection.

Last month, Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell signed the rapper's execution warrant. But Judge Gary Glazer has issued an order to put Cool C's execution on hold until his post-conviction litigation is resolved.

An early pioneer in Hip-Hop, Cool C was a member of the Philadelphia-based rap collective The Hilltop Hustlers in the late 1980s. He hit it big with "Juice Crew Dis" and the 1989 hit single, "Glamorous Life."

OK, Doberman, I get the message: Cops should all wear bullet proof vests. Seriously, this was a terrible tragedy. Cool C must've really fallen on hard times.

Cool was probably on drugs. And although this was a tragic act of violence, it was not an act of premeditated murder. When people choose to enter the ranks of law enforcment, they are aware that they're puttin their lives in jeopardy, A policewoman is not a kindergarten teacher. I say, let Cool spend the rest of his life rotting on death row

Cynique,

You seem to be saying that because police work is risky, killing a cop should be considered somehow LESS serious than killing a civilian. If that is what you mean, we disagree.

I think that killing cop is probably the very worst kind of killing and should AT LEAST be punished as harshly as ANY other crime.

Because killing a cop is direct blow against the delicate social order/contract that a society of people enters into. Thus, someone who's fool enuff to whack a cop is a real/immediate danger to us all.

And that don't even include the part about his victim being a BLACK mother.

So in my opinion, Cool C should have been lethally injected or electrocuted at least a half a decade ago.

May GOD have mercy on his soul. Because I sure as hell wouldn't.

I look at the big picture, ABM. What if Rodney King had pulled out a gun and shot one of the cops who were beating him? Policemen are supposed to serve and protect, but they are human, and they can be over-aggressive and they can fire indiscriminately as one female cop did in Chicago when she shot and killed a young women who was emerging from her boyfriend's stopped car carrying a cell phone which the female cop mistook for a gun. I repeat, becoming a member of law enforcement is a conscious decision to enter into a profession where losing one's life is a distinct possibility. The particular case in point in which a law officer was killed in the line of duty was a very tragic act of violence and the perpetrators of the crime were up to no good, but who knows, a white boy with no previous record and a good lawyer may have beaten the DEATH PENALTY. Yes, policeman are symbols of law and order in society and their uniform should be respected but - shit happens. Policemen are not automatic heroes and police brutality and rogue cops are a fact of life. BTW, the controversy continues to rage in Chicago in regard to whether or not one block on a street should be named after Fred Hampton, a murdered member of the Black Panther party. Those in favor of this, and there are many, say that Fred Hampton had never been involved in any shoot-outs with the police and was an innocent victim of the cops who raided his apartment while he was asleep and shot down him down in his bed without his ever lifting a finger.

Doberman:

Them times weren't so bad. We had a lot of laughs. We always used to talk about how bad the times were before ours. And our parents did before ours--etc.

Abm:

He's still alive because of the same principle you brought up to defend that murdering comic book addict--due process of law.

Easy to bring up when your ox is getting gored, eh?

Cynique,

It's one thing to shot a cop in self-defense (your hypothetical Rodney King scenario), quite another to shoot one while trying to escape while committing a crime (what Cool C was CONVICTED of doing).

Because when someone willfully commits a crime via a gun, he/she assumes IN/ALL liability of the consequences of your actions.

Likewise, I don't believe a cop accidently killing a civilian while mistaking a cellphone for a gun is remotely equivalent to what Cool C did.

And I agree becoming a cop is a choice. But my argument focuses less on that and more on the overall consequences of cop killing.

Someone who will kill a cop (other than via self-defense) is capable of harm just about anybody. Either he or she will feel he's got nothing to loose because his days are numbered. Or he'll think since his big/bad enuff to dust-off a cop, woe and hell be onto that mofo who looks edgewise at me. Plus, he may embolden copycat copkillings.

And law enforcement knows that. And are going to deal out some swift/harsh payback, dayam how many innocent foks get caught in the backdraft.

So not only is cop killer a danger to the community in/of himself. He's also incited a fury within local law enforcement that could prove calamitous to EVERYBODY in the community.

Again, that's why I say fry Cool C and spare other BLACK foks the confusion/grief of having to worry about his stupid a$$.

And GOD Bless him; but I could hardly give a dayam whether a street is named Fred Hampton. And I say that from the perspective of someone who has relatives who actually knew him and know his people.

Chris,

Hey, Counselor. The difference between the guy with the comic book character handle and Cool C is Cool C has actually been CONVICTED in a court of law of MURDERING...A COP.

Well, ABM, nothing I said was diametrically oppposed to what you just wrote. I just cited extenuating circumstances and too often black folks don't get the benefit of the doubt when it comes to confrontations with the police. Fred Hampton is from my hometown, and although you don't care about his having a street named after him, relatives of slain policemen are outraged.
