So I ordered a movie yesterday On Demand... It was Hustle & Flow... Forget about Terrence Howard for a minute..... This woman right here deserves an Oscar... Taraji P. Henson for her role as Shug... WOW.. She acted her ass off in this movie. I finally had time to watch the movie, I was mainly watching to see why everyone was raving over Terrence Howard, but I was captivated with Taraji. She was so powerful in the movie, I began to feel what she felt... After seeing this movie I think that she deserved a nomination for Best Supporting Actress... She was remarkable. I remember her from Baby Boy, but I didn't know she could throw down like that. She is deffinately a huge actress in the making. I doubt that we have seen the best from her. I can honestly say she is probably one the best young actresses out right now, if not The best... Pic Below...

Paula Jai Parker was good as well. She always plays a hoe in her movies, but this time, it seems like her character had more depth, and it seems like she worked on her performance... I think that if her character lasted a little longer she would have been able to do a little more with her acting skills.... Hell, why not, Give her an Oscar too damit... This movie had a few great performances.... I was surprised.... But for Ms. Henson...... Standing O for her......

I also recently saw Roll Bounce. It's a real feel good movie. I would buy the dvd, and I don't buy too many of those... Bow Wow was good in it. I was surprised. He's a young Will Smith, I will say that. Megan Good, beautiful as usual. I want to see her in a role with more depth, instead of always playing the pretty girl.

Her co-star from Eve's Bayou was in it too. Jurnee Smollett. A great young actress. She has really blossomed well, I'll say that. Her acting is great... I can't wait to see what she does in the future....

Taraji is hands down the most gifted young actress in Hollywood, black or white.
It's a tragedy that she doesn't get more and better roles.
She's another one who I would like to cast in the films I'm planning.
She needs to play something much broader and be the STAR of the film.

Yeah, I've seen Taraji in a couple of movies, and I hope she gets not just better roles, but cast in better movies. |

Thanks for the informative review. I haven't seen H&F but I did see Baby Boy and I remember how sad I felt when Taraji was sitting in the car in the rain with her girlfriend crying about "he don't love me no more." I could really feel her anguish. |

Taraji was fine in that Baby Boy scene. But as I'm watching it I'm thinking "Why is a wonderful young woman like her crying over a nikka like "Baby Boy"? She need to stop whining for that fool, get the hell out of South Central LA and go out into the world and get her a REAL man." |

ABM,
I'm with you on that Brother! My thinking is that there's six and a half billion people in the world, and quite a few of those are Black - so don't trip on one person and go out and get with someone else. Or just be alone. Especially if they aren't treating you right, don't have anything going for themselves, no job, no money, no game, no nothing. But her character was young. She didn't know any better. And she was in love. So we must overlook her stupidity 
But even worse, this scenario is played out thousands of times in real life. There are so many beautiful, intelligent, remarkable Black women jonesing over brothers that are total losers. Women hung up over men that are in prison. Sometimes the men are imprisoned for committing crimes against the very same women that are waiting for them to get out. And all the Black women who are dating married men or who have multiple babidaddies. It's really unfortunate that we can't seem to get ourselves together better than this.

Because,
...."Black culture/Community" doesn't raise black girls with those options.
She has to be DOWN...prove her LOYALTY...stand by her Black man.
The struggle of the community is never about HER or what she wants or desires for herself. She's raised that she's GHETTO (inferior)--HE WAS TAUGHT THAT TOO, and she's nothing without him----which is what John Singleton BRILLIANTLY showed all throughout that film with the female characters.
Only the MOTHER (who was actually based on Alice Walker) was a real woman--gardening, having a man, being financially automous.
Sadly, there had been no "MAN" around to raise BabyBoy. And the mother mistakenly thought he would just grow up and BLOOM into a man.
As for Taraji's characters plight, the black community has never successfully invested anything into the "honor" being a black woman. That's why so many don't want to be black.
Like so many INNER CITY black youths---she didn't believe in herself beyond the blocks she lived on.

I was just saying what came to my mind as I observed that scene. I agree it is easier said than done for many young Black women to find, love and be loved by decent and productive young Black men.

What was there about the mother in Baby Boy that was reminiscent of Alice Walker? Baby Boy’s mother was knocking boots with a BLACK male ex-con. I thought Walker preferred her lovin’ from Jewish men...or from other women. |

She described herself as a "womanist" (the term created by Walker)...and her favorite thing was her large beautiful garden, like Walker.
Incidentally:
Walker lived with a Black man, Robert Allen, editor of "The Black Scholar", 3 times longer than she did her Jewish husband.
I think of her MORE as a lesbian.

All of the movies she acts in, she really brings the characters to life... For some reason I want to meet her now... I think we need more actresses like her to really lead the way for the new generation of black actresses tryin to make it. Show them how it's really done...

ABM, Alice Walker fell in love with Robert Allen in the early 70's and they started a publishing house, Wild Trees Press. I believe they were together 14 years. Here they are on the cover of one of her recent books:

You know, ABM, I believe she's a lot like me.
I think that in a PERFECT WORLD--she would have chosen the most wonderful black man.
But then...she had a glass eye, was dirt poor and came from a long line of black southern couples where the men BATTERED the women....hence "The Color Purple".
I always envied that she could be bi-sexual, because that is the one major difference between me and so many of my idols.
I actually desire to be a black man's slave if possible. But he has to be good to me.
I'm joking....but I mean in the African Sense.
"My Master/My Husband" as the edict of my culture goes.
To me, that was natural and safe and it worked.
So this is another reason I haven't been accepted by feminists and womanists. They can tell that by the breast-bearing and the fact that I've never worked a 9 to 5 job....that I'm yoked very strangely for a womanist.
But I AM a womanist! Very much so. You've seen how lascerating I can be. You know.
But I really adore dominant, macho men---that's the problem.
They suspect my feminism is more a Defense Mechanism of being alone.

Kola,
I think most women prefer their men to be manly. After all, what's the point of having a girly man when you can much more easily get all the female crap from other chicks?
And I think most men at their core WANT to take care of women. But that's A LOT of work. And A LOT of guys just aren't up to the task.
And A LOT of you don't exactly inspire a worthy effort of us. |

Edenson - Based on your recommendation I PPVd Hustle & Flow this weekend and watched it three times. It's one of my favorite movies now. Everyone's performance was great, I enjoyed them all, but my favorite character - the one most overlooked that tickled me the most - was Shelby. Because he illustrates that you just can't judge a book by it's cover.
And my new theme song is - "You Know It's Hard Out Here For A Ho!" LOL!!! |

I totally disagree. I think Alice Walker is completely color-struck... and I think she despises black men (and to a degree, black people) for racial reasons not sexist/misogynistic ones. I just get that sense from her and it's really strong.
I still think "The Color Purple" was accurate--but I understand, now, how black men felt having it come from her. |
